Appreciation Day Aug. 30 at Palm Beach Kennel Club

This August, PBKC has featured On Track for Greyhound Adoption and the fund-raising program culminates with a Track Walk Saturday, August 30 at noon.  Employees, customers and Greyhound adoption representatives with pets will participate by walking the track to show their support. A special ceremony and a check presentation will follow the walk.

PBKC is very fortunate to work with four adoption groups who find homes for retired racers. The groups include:  Awesome Greyhound Adoptions/Hounds for Heroes, Elite Greyhound Adoptions, Forever Greyhounds and Greyhound Pets of America. The groups care for retired racers and screen and inform potential adopters in order to find the right pet for the right family. They are non-profit, volunteer-run groups that are very active in the community, participating in events, parades and other functions to promote adoptions.

Semi-Finals Tonight

The third round of the 2014 JGR Puppy Stakes saw some very heated battles in the five remaining races, but when the smoke cleared, just one greyhound remains unbeaten.

Catness Everdean left nothing to chance in the 9th race on the card as she hit the lid and took instant command of the race. Putting some lengths between her and the rest of the field early on, she coasted all the way around the racetrack on the lead to secure her third straight victory. Gaining ground throughout was chaser Kiowa Collin, followed by steady chaser Gm’s Miss Ashley, and the quick closing Pj Hold on Loose.

Some ‘Enchanting’ evening in Phoenix

RCI-Industry-News's insight:

Once Upon a Time, in 1951…

Buried in the pages of history is one of the best match races ever – the 1951 duel between Real Huntsman and Enchanting….

One of the more dramatic features in greyhound racing that gradually went the way of pay phones and drive-in theaters was the Match Race. The era of the Greyhound Match Race was from the 1940s on through the 1960s, when it seemed—to the delight of fans—that there were numerous duels being put together virtually every season. By contrast, few of today’s fans have even witnessed a highly promoted, thrilling match race.

Kate’s ‘Golden’ dream comes true

RCI-Industry-News's insight:

Dream experts claim that when one sees gold coins while sleeping it represents success and wealth. To date, I have not found an interpretation for dreaming of golden greyhounds, but I have seen the dream of golden greys come true for Catherine “Kate” D’Arcy.

“It’s so different when it’s your dream,” said Kate. “I still can’t believe the years of planning and dreaming really did come true for me.” Kate is still over the moon with Golden Squire’s undefeated stakes victory, consecutive races, All America Team II recognition, and his recent run at the Flashy Sir award (top distance athlete). And sharing the front cover of the Jan./Feb. Review with AA Team Captain Rob Gronkowski was pretty special for Kate, too.

Iowa Casinos Can Terminate Greyhound Racing

Iowa Casinos Can Terminate Greyhound Racing | Greyhound Racing | Scoop.it

Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad May 31 signed into law a bill that will allow casinos to buy out dog racing.

Branstad had delayed signing the bill because of objections from Iowa horsemen over a provision that will let the Iowa Greyhound Association simulcast horse and dog races at Iowa casinos without guaranteeing any of the revenue go to purses for horse racing.

A week earlier he had said: "My concern, I think, the horse industry was left out of this." However, officials from Council Bluffs and Dubuque lobbied strongly for passage of the bill, saying the casinos were spending $13 million per year on Greyhound racing that could otherwise go to charity.

At the halfway point of the qualifying for the $60,000 3-8 mile Derby at Bluffs Run, a lone greyhound sits at the top of the points standings.

Epic Revolution (Plum Creek Kennel), 20-5-2-4, is the only greyhound to win in each of the first two rounds. In the Saturday, May 10, second round, the 68-pounder, born Nov. 10, 2011 out of Kelsos Fusileer-Taser, went box-to-wire from the one box to win by a length and a half.

RCI-Industry-News's insight:

Dubuque Greyhound Park starts off its 30th season of live greyhound racing with a double header on Saturday, April 26th. The matinee started at 1:00 pm with 15 races that included the $2,000 Dubuque Inaugural. Eight hand-picked greyhound stars returning from across the country. One name that many remember from 2013, Superior Product of the Superior Kennel, who tied the record of most wins in a season at Dubuque. Surprisingly Superior Product was not the favorite of the race but when the race went off he jumped out on top and never looked back winning by 12 lengths. B’s Graciebswift of the Blanchard-Calabro Kennel ignored the trouble in the 1st and came on to take second place. O Ya Spider Webb of the River Bluffs Kennel was second until the stretch where he was nosed out to finish ending up in third place. Rounding off the Superfecta was Pat C Sabbath of the Pat C Greyhound Kennel.
