Jack’s Million | National Greyhound Association

Jack’s Million | National Greyhound Association | Greyhound Racing | Scoop.it

National Greyhound Association

RCI-Industry-News's insight:

The Derby Lane Million owes its existence to Jack Sherck—and his divorce. Actually, the split was the primary catalyst that got Jack contemplating a big race in the first place. “I was hanging around the pool dipping out leaves, drinking wine, and not caring too much about anything,” Jack said during a recent conversation. “I was lonely and really needed to pour myself into something big. One morning, I was having breakfast with Vince Berland, and I threw an idea out. It’s one of those things that if you get “no” from a couple of your friends, you’d better come up with a different idea. I asked Vince what he thought about a million dollar race. His response was positive. He asked how I would do it. I told him I wasn’t sure, but I knew we’d have to build it. I asked if he’d be willing to put money into a thing like that, and he said yes. I ran it by three or four other people who were positive, too.”

Jon Vickers, Luciano Pavarotti, and Placido Domingo, might be famous for their opera voices, but around bestbet Orange Park, soprano Lee Opera is the turning heads with her natural abilities.

This February 2012 daughter of Soprano Drive and Lee Devlin has been the hottest thing going at bestbet Orange Park over the last month, and looked to be the favorite in the first edition of our Sweet Sixteen race.

Flying Zinc in PB Derby

Flying Zinc in PB Derby | Greyhound Racing | Scoop.it

National Greyhound Association

RCI-Industry-News's insight:

Zinc is a metallic chemical element; it has the symbol Zn and atomic number 30. Zinc is also used as a component of many batteries.

On Feb. 22 at Palm Beach Kennel Club Royal Racing Team’s Flying Zinc had more than enough energizing-battery power in her as she romped to an easy box-to-wire victory in the 83rd running of the track’s $50,000 James W. Paul 3/8ths Mile Derby.

Another thing the greyhound Flying Zinc has in common with the definition is the number 30, as in 37.30.

Dirt Road wins Derby Lane Rotary stake | Greyhound Racing | Scoop.it

It is hard to believe that a decade has passed since Rotarians and Derby Lane teamed up for an annual fund raising day at the races. Money earned from the charity events benefit several districts and funds the esteemed Seminar for Tomorrow’s Leaders program. The prominent S4TL project is a joint venture of the entire western and central Florida Rotary Districts for incoming seniors of all of the high schools located in the Districts.

Each year the selected Saturday matinee format includes the Rotary Governor’s Hot Box feature that is put together by the Racing Secretary. The elite eight Greyhounds vie for the coveted plaque presented by district Governor’s and S4TL dignitaries.

Brothers run 1-2 in PB Pup Stake

Brothers run 1-2 in PB Pup Stake | Greyhound Racing | Scoop.it

B & B Racing Kennel’s Storm Control was in complete control as he held off fellow rival, and brother, Juggernaut to win the 48th running of Palm Beach Kennel Club’s $20,000 Bob Balfe Puppy Stakes, Saturday afternoon, April 26.

In the finale, it was Storm Control breaking on top with his sibling giving chase on the inside. After a first-turn traffic jam took co-favorite Ghost Buster out of the mix - believe it or not, a brother to Storm Control and Juggernaut - it was clear that it would be one of these two who earned family bragging rights.

As they entered the top of the homestretch, it was Storm Control in command with Juggernaut closing in for the upset.

Senate panel approves greyhound injury reporting

Senate panel approves greyhound injury reporting | Greyhound Racing | Scoop.it

A special Senate committee on gambling regulation voted to make greyhound tracks report injuries to animals Tuesday, but efforts by two Southeast Florida senators who want to end dog racing fizzled.

Vicky Gaetz, the wife of Senate President Don Gaetz, added her silent support to the effort bySens. Maria Sachs, D-Delray Beach, andEleanor Sobel, D-Hollywood, to greatly curtail greyhound racing. The Select Committee on Gaming approved Sobel's bill (SB 742) requiring track operators to report deaths and injuries of racing animals, but Sachs withdrew her amendment that would have allowed "decoupling" of dog racing and operation of card rooms or slot machines at the tracks.

Round 3 of Patton Silver Cup Friday

Round 3 of Patton Silver Cup Friday | Greyhound Racing | Scoop.it

The field has been trimmed down and only the best of the best remain in the 2014 edition of the James J Patton Silver Cup. Four races chalked full of talent, and besides back to back winner Lee Opera, the rest of the field has been trading shots for points and positions so far in the first two rounds. The field is still wide open and anything can happen as 24 of the remaining 34 greyhounds are just a win out of the lead.

Let’s take a closer look at the third round of action and see if we can’t get you winners and extra entries into the Camero drawing.

Legislature advances bill to end greyhound racing in Iowa

Legislature advances bill to end greyhound racing in Iowa | Greyhound Racing | Scoop.it

An Iowa House panel Wednesday advanced legislation to provide a $70 million “soft landing” for the greyhound industry, but lawmakers are hoping a Thursday meeting between the industry and casinos will resolve differences over ending dog racing in Iowa

.

“That’s what every legislator wants,” said Rep. Brian Moore, R-Bellevue, who represents a district with about a dozen operations where dogs are bred and trained.

Moore didn’t sign off on House File 2406 because he doesn’t want the full Ways and Means Committee to take up the bill Thursday and he doesn’t want casinos to have an advantage in the meeting with the greyhound association.

Lee Opera Flawless in 10th Straight Win

Lee Opera Flawless in 10th Straight Win | Greyhound Racing | Scoop.it

The second round of the 2014 $50,000 James J Patton Stakes has run, and after the dust has cleared, only one greyhound remains undefeated so far and I bet you can guess just who that is.

Lee Opera, of course!

This little lady is reaching rarified air with her 10th victory in a row, including a stakes title and three stakes round wins. She has won 13 of her last 15 starts and has been in the quiniela in each and every one of those efforts. She is as fast as she wants to be and is as smart as almost any greyhound that I have seen over the last 15 years of racing. She always avoids the trouble and takes whatever the race gives her. This was all apparent once again in round two in the 10th race.

Golden Squire back to winning ways

Known to his fans as Sydney and dubbed the “Thunder from Up Under” the Australian sired Golden Squire rumbled in his return race and toyed with the season’s best time over the 660-yard course. Kate D’Arcy owns the son of Surf Lorian and former Derby Lane stakes female Greys Touch Gold that was ready to rumble in race eight.

The June 2011 red brindle male began a late assault last year and owned the 660-yard oval that included the $75,000 Holiday Distance title where he was undefeated in all five rounds. Sydney was also named to the 2013 All America Team II and was a major player in the running for the Flashy Sir award for the nation’s top distance athlete.

“I had so many inquiries about breeding to him (Squire) that while he was rested we drew from him,” said Kate. Golden Squire appeared rested and ready and was the best in the stretch in his return run. He stopped the clock at 37.06, which was just .05 seconds from the best 37.01 held by Cal Holland kennel’s Penrose Kyle (Rhythmless x Penrose Tess).

And in Greyhound racing, as the old handicapping saying goes, “It is what it is.”

Rader Racing Kennel’s Rob Gronkowski is most likely the fastest and most famous four-legged athlete in the country today.

Wheeling Island co-win champion Flying Lone Wolf has been selected captain of the 2013 all-Wheeling team.

The Vince Berland Kennel sprint star had an outstanding season with 20 victories despite missing two months of the racing season, was runnerup in the sprint stakes and posted eye-popping percentages in the quiniela and trifecta. He was an easy choice to head the 10-greyhound unit.

In addition to Flying Lone Wolf, the Vince Berland Kennel placed Go Bon Coaltrain and Go Bon Wego on the 2013 team. The A Ray Kennel also had multiple selections as KB’s Try This On, Kebo Greta Garbo and AMF Can Can were named to the team.

Arizona Will Allow Account Wagering for Horse and Dog Racing

Arizona Will Allow Account Wagering for Horse and Dog Racing | Greyhound Racing | Scoop.it

When we talk about the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) or the Wire Act, we often act as though these measures affect all types of interactive betting equally. But the truth of the matter is far different.

It has long been true that horse and dog racing – along with state lotteries – have been exempt from many of the regulations that stifle other online and phone-based gaming enterprises, thanks to specific exceptions in these laws. And that means that while getting any other form of remote betting passed is a struggle at the best of times, innovations happen in the horse and dog racing industries all the time.

A Night for the Opera

A Night for the Opera | Greyhound Racing | Scoop.it

Over the years I have experienced a ton of stakes event, and as the box opens up, you never quite know what you are going to get. Sometimes the longshot upset everyone, sometimes the all or nothing greyhound shows up, and sometimes the best greyhound in the field proved that they deserve to win. On Saturday evening April 5th in the $50,000 2014 James J Patton Silver Cup, the last one was the correct answer as Lee Opera put up a bold statement with a dominate winning performance that set her amongst, not only the elite at bestbet Orange Park, but one of the best around the entire country.

No real surprise that she was the betting favorite in this final round race as leading up to the finals she had won 3 of the 4 qualifying rounds, 11 of her last 12 races including  10 races in a row along with the Sweet 16 title, and she had been in the quiniela in 17 races in a row. No doubt she was the greyhound to beat, but as everyone knows the best greyhound does not always win the finals of the stakes.

Headliner goes for 100

Birmingham star and 2013 North American Win Championship WW Headliner will be going for career win No. 100 on Friday (Mar. 28) evening at the Alabama track.

The 59-lb. red-fawn daughter of Kiowa WW Brother-WW's Blue Bonnet set a single-year record by winning 65 races at Birmingham in 2013. She's likely the early win leader once again this year, with 18 wins and 2 seconds in her first 20 starts. She has notched a 10-race win streak already this year and has been victorious in her last three outings.

WW Headliner will be running from the No. 3 box in the sixth race Friday night at Birmingham. Should she win, Headliner will become the 49th greyhound in North American history to capture 100 or more career victories.

Ds Libra (Bean & Stout) 15-7-5-0 rallied from third place in the homestretch to win the Elite Eight race by a length in the $60,000 Team Survivor Stakes at Bluffs Run on Wednesday, March 26 to advance to the Final Four.

That eliminated Vj Flip Flop (Seastrom-Lovely) 16-7-1-3, whose third-place finish would prove to be not good enough.

Akiyama (Hardison) 16-3-6-2 led from the opening of the boxes, but settled for second place. However that was good enough to advance.

Sarras Wins Three - Opera Steals the Show

Sarras Wins Three - Opera Steals the Show | Greyhound Racing | Scoop.it

The Steve Sarras Kennel was on fire in the first round of the stakes as they took home 3 wins in the 8 stakes events on the card. That would have been the top story, except that Lee Opera stole the show once again. Winning her 9th straight race, and her 11th in her last 12 starts, Lee Opera solidified her spot as the best greyhound at the racetrack with yet another stakes winning effort.

Lee Opera ran in the 9th race on the card, and this Lester Raines Product, looked the part as the best greyhound going at bestbet Orange Park. Breaking close, she rushed up behind leader Myra Kraft at the turn and made a really smart inside move that will help her find a way to the lead and eventually the win. By the 660 box she finally got her nose in front and took command of this effort. Coasting home she was easily the best by a few lengths, but the runner-up in the recent First Coast Derby, Gs Daisy May, make it interesting as they approached the wire. She closer hard and chipped away at the margins, but still could only manage next best. Third was Pat C No Fuss as he outlasted early leader Myra Kraft at the wire for the show spot.

Win Streak Continues for Lee Opera

Lee Opera gave another determined effort on Wednesday Matinee in the 11th race on the card to keep the streak alive.

Breaking from the one box, Opera chased the pace to the turn and was third as they turned up the backside. Showing no quit at all, she continued to gain with every stride and was inching closer and closer to the lead. By the far turn she had got her nose in front, but it was going to be a battle to the wire. Digging in deep in the final few strides, she secured the win by a half of a length in the quickest trip of the day, 30.72 seconds. Kudos to veteran Scortch Mcbone who set the pace, finished in place, and gave her a run for her money all the way to the wire. Third was the closing threat Jaw’s Gallery, and rounding out the super was Kiowa Kay Folk.
