For years I have contributed to the NGA raffle pups in an effort to help generate funding for the Greyhound Hall of Fame. I have clapped and cheered for those whose names were drawn wishing to hear my own. In 2013 the first name drawn for the 40th annual pup raffle was music to my ears when Gary Guccione announced Vera Rasnake. I was so excited as if it was my first pup ever. I looked over the quality pups like many others in attendance at the banquet held for Karen Keelen and told everyone I hoped to win the handsome male donated by Greyhound Hall of Famer Pat Collins. Luck was on my side when I won that very pup by one of Pat’s prominent sires Pat C Clement and nice female Tipp Amber. What an exciting time it has been since winning the pup. The youngster was finished at Tony and Judy Mill’s farm in Abilene, which made it nice for me to visit him when I went to last year’s spring nationals.

Chasmo’s Octane and Kb’s Rocket Dog both put up impressive efforts once again to remain undefeated in the stakes, but no one make more of a statement than the 2014 Orange Park Derby winner, Tmc’s Sweety Pie.
Breaking from her coveted 1 box in the 7th race, Tmc’s Sweety Pie, toyed with the leaders as she came out of the box in a hurry and stalked them to the turn. By the time they reached the escape, she was already in front, and from that point on, it just got UGLY for the rest of the field. Coasting to the far turn, she was well in the lead, but in the stretch she really kicked it up a notch as she rocketed home to cross the line 17 and a half lengths better than the rest as she stopped the clock at a blistering 30.59 seconds time. Easily the best performance of the card, Sweety Pie is BACK!

The third round is ready to go in the Jacksonville Juvenile, and with 4 rounds left, there is limited time to rack up some more points and make a run at the finals.
Two greyhounds are already in great shape, Kb’s Rocket Dog and Chasmo’s Octane, both have a pair of wins in two rounds and are undefeated as of yet, but they drew in together in this round so something has to give.
Several others have won a round and finished close in another and are stalking the pace set by the leaders in points to this junction. All is up for grabs again, let’s see who is going to rise to the occasion, and maybe we can even get some picks right this time! LOL!

Numbers tell much—but not necessarily all—of the story. That said, here are the final totals of the NGA Fall Meet Auction 2014.
Total sales this fall for the pups was $1,080,200. That’s the fourth straight NGA Meet where the auction has exceeded the million-dollar mark. The previous three sales were larger. Fall 2012 (at $998,600) was smaller.
Of the 452 pups consigned to the most recent sale, 165 sold. That’s fewer than the number sold last fall (197)—but more than in Fall 2012 (154). About 37 percent of the pups consigned sold, which is a smaller percent than either of the last two sales (an incredibly high 54 percent in the Spring 2014, and 48 percent in Fall 2013). You’d have to go back to Fall 2011 (also 37 percent) to find a percentage as low as this latest one. The last time it was lower was Fall 2010, when it was a mere 30 percent.

Repeating their top performance at the Spring 2014 Auction, the team of Jay Rangel and Paul Bitterman once again ranked as the top selling operation, selling 27 greyhounds for a total of $371,400.
That topped the $312,250 the Rangel-Bitterman crew sold at the Spring Meet.
Top prize in the auction—and the second highest in NGA Auction history—was the $78,000 paid for the Rangel-Bitterman pup, PJ EZ Pass, by Steve Sarras and Jerry Patterson.

Everyone loves a hero and this year’s hero is Joey Ice. The male has simply captured the hearts of a global audience that is seen in his odds every time he races. Last year the nation watched Palm Beach star Rob Gronkowski steal the show and win the Rural Rube award for top sprinter and was named the All America Team Captain. Fans loved watching him win. This year Joey Ice (Kiowa Sweet Trey x Queen Rania) is racing towards the same status, but could even possibly add a third title as North America wins leader. His victory in the $50.000 stakes was a 45th win this year and he shows no signs of slowing down. His stellar stats stand at 62/45-10-3-1 after his victory. Joey’s stakes winning time of 30.19 was the fastest winning time in the eight-year history of the stakes and erased the best 30.27 clocked by former triple crown champion Flying Coal City-the 2010 stakes winner.

Dubuque Greyhound Park at Mystique ran its annual Dubuque Classic stakes event Saturday Evening August 30th. For thirty years Dubuque Greyhound Park has celebrate this 3-8ths of mile stakes event and this year was no different. Starting off with 32 greyhounds and three rounds later the final eight greyhounds were introduced to the race fans in a video at a special dinner early in the week. This special dinner introduced the final eight greyhounds and gave each kennel a chance to draw a post position for their dog. This year’s theme was Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. The Director of Racing, Brian Carpenter, was dressed up as Willy Wonka and gave each kennel starting off with the highest point getter a chance to send up a representative from their kennel to grab a jar filled with candy that had a golden egg hidden inside. As the representative from the kennel came up and poured out the candy to find the golden egg. Once the golden egg was pulled from the jar they would smash the egg to find the golden ticket inside that displayed the post position they drew for their dog in the final race.

Penrose Kyle racing from the Cal Holland kennel blistered the 660-yard oval at Derby Lane again Saturday night September 13 resetting his own best time of 36.90 to a half-length faster at 36.86.
Kyle and his littermates have done well for trainer Justin Holland. Penrose Kyle now holds three of the top ten fastest 660-yard times this meet. Last meet Penrose Kyle set the seasons best twice. Penrose Kyle (Rhythmless x Penrose Tess) and his littermates Kendra, Racey, Zeb and Brady-all with the Penrose prefix, have taken well to the Derby Lane oval for owner Nick De Salvo of Penrose CO.
Only four greyhounds have clocked a sub 37-second winning time since July 1 and race from two kennels-both with Colorado connections. Lashmet kennel’s LK’s Zealous (36.99) was the first followed by the kennel’s St. Pete Derby champion Jack’s Lil Bigman’s (36.98). Kyle’s sister Penrose Kendra (Holland kennel) nudged Bigman’s time with a 36.95, but the man returned with a 36.92. On August 26 Penrose Kyle nudged the time by .02 in a ten-length romp. September 14 Penrose Kyle does it again and set the new time to 36.86.

Three greyhounds share the point lead after the quarterfinal round of the $60,000 Secretary’s Choice on Wednesday, Sept. 10, at Bluffs Run.
It is an impressive group as the trio has won in each of the three rounds to earn the maximum of 45 points. Since, traditionally, a greyhound needs to earn 40 points to qualify for the championship race of a Bluffs Run stakes, the trio look to be in the final.
The most impressive is the pup in the group. Boc’s Hank Jr (Boeckenstedt), a 75-pounder born Feb. 5, 2013 out of Kiowa Mon Manny-Boc’s Miss Rodeo is off to a 9-8-1-0 start to his career. His quarterfinal win was a 12-length romp in a 30.86 second clocking that was the fastest among the six quarterfinal races on a slow 5-16 mile track.

The weather turning cooler means the 2014 Fall Meet is in the air. Some of you may have seen the Racing PROud banner hanging on the grandstand during the last several Nationals. Are you wondering who is Racing PROud? The answer is: hopefully, everyone reading this article! What is Racing PROud? Well, it’s quite a story which, interestingly enough, has roots stemming from, of all things, a football game commercial.

Imagine Alicia Key’s hit song “Girl on Fire” playing in the background while watching America’s leading female score another victory at Derby Lane. Well, the music wasn’t playing, but fans that attended the December 8 races saw Husker Magic win her 45th race of the year. Not only is she America’s top female, the beautiful blonde and is also Derby Lane’s top female. And Husker Magic aced the formatted stakes-like race. The 32-month old female whelped from North America’s leading brood Casino Zada and sired by Rhythmless made winning look easier in a box to wire victory for Abernathy kennel and trainer Kayruth Abernathy.
Husker Magic broke from post eight against former stakes winners Art Vandelay and JW B Ward. Not only did she beat those talented males Husker Magic halted CBJ Ellen’s attempt at a fifth in a row top grade win. Terry and Lisa Haber of Haber Kennels owns the 69-pound powerhouse.

Tom Ferris topped the individual purchasers at the Fall Meet Auction, buying seven pups for $90,500. But if Steve Sarras (who spent $64,750 individually while buying four pups) factors in half of the $78,000 paid for PJ EZ Pass (purchased in partnership with Jerry Patterson), that pushes his total to more than $100,000.
Other major purchasers at the meet included Norm Rader (15 pups for $79,500), Randy Finegan (seven pups for $76,500), Rodney Cooley (four pups for $71,400), Green Smith (six pups for $70,000), Lester Raines (four pups for $55,750) and Tim Ertl (six pups for $41,500).
There were a total of 52 different individuals or entities that purchased pups in the Fall 2014 sale. Of those buyers, seven were on-line—part of the 13 on-line bidders who participated by offering a total of 230 bids. On-line buyers purchased 23 pups for a total of $97,600, plus three females in the brood-stock sale that pushed their total sales to $101,200.

Hilco Klassy proved the class of the 29th running of the $500,000 Iowa Breeders Classic at Bluffs Run on Saturday, Nov. 1, with an impressive six length decision.
“She ran a lights out race,” said Bean & Stout Kennel trainer Joe Osborne. “We knew she had a shot when she took the lead in the first turn because she is not short.”
The triumph for Hilco Klassy, a 66 pounder, born May 8, 2012 out of Bluffs Run Hall of Famer KC And All and Primco Kapow, was a bit of a surprise to the Bluffs Run patrons. She went off as the fifth favorite with odds of 8.20 on the dollar.

In the end nothing much changed on the point list for the $60,000 Secretary Choice at Bluffs Run following the running of the three semifinal races on Saturday, Sept. 13.
But how that nothing evolved proved interesting.
Seven of the eight greyhounds holding the top point spots hung onto them to advance to the championship race. That is about par for the course in a stakes series here. But there was a scramble in the list.
