Wheeling 3/8 stakes kicks off Wednesday | Greyhound Racing | Scoop.it

The $25,000 John Dallas Memorial Keystone Stake kicks off Wednesday afternoon at Wheeling Island with a field of 32 greyhounds.

The favorite in the stakes event appears to be CTW Leona Brown, but several other 3/8 greyhounds, including TK Rock Of Ages, Boc’s Soup Nazi, Whiskey Babe, Agent Of Shield and Napa Know How, may have a say in the championship.

Two sprinters moving up to the longer distance, WW’s Calculator and WW Fed Court, will be interesting to watch.

The Boeckenstedt Kennel produced five winners (in the 12 races) to open action in the $60,000 Secretary’s Choice on Wednesday, May 6, at Bluffs Run.

Leading the charge was Boc’s Hank Jr, who ran off with a comfortable five-length decision in the day’s final race on the program. Hank Jr, 16-10-1-4, a 2014 All-Bluffs Run team selection, came into the Choice with the most wins of any of the 96 greyhounds in the field. He broke sixth from the sixth box but quickly assumed control on the way to his victory.

Boeckenstedt also got wins in the first, second, fourth and sixth races.

$60,000 Secretary's Choice at Bluffs Run

$60,000 Secretary's Choice at Bluffs Run | Greyhound Racing | Scoop.it

After the distance folks opened the Bluffs Run stakes series in 2015 with the 3-8 Mile Derby, the sprinters take center stage with the $60,000 Secretary’s Choice which starts on Wednesday, May 6.

The 96-greyhound field will fill the entire program on Wednesday and again on Saturday, May 9, for the second round.

Based simply on victories earned thus far in 2015, several of the opening-round races offer interesting showdowns. Also added in the mix is the decision by some kennels to bring their 3-8 milers over to the Secretary’s Choice field.

Record broken again

As Yogi might say, it's deja vu all over again.

Just as a Jay Rangel-Paul Bitterman pup broke the Abilene Greyhound Park track record twice last year before heading into the NGA Spring Meet, another Rangel-Bitterman youngster destined for the National Meet and Auction has duplicated that feat this year.

PJ Burninitdown lowered his own mark of 29.35 (set on Mar. 19) to a new standard of 29.30 yesterday morning (Mar. 23).

Colorado breeding veteran Pat Collins honored

Colorado breeding veteran Pat Collins honored | Greyhound Racing | Scoop.it

Colorado breeding veteran Pat Collins will be honored at the NGA Spring Meet in April with the NGA’s 5th Annual Lifetime Achievement Award.

The 2012 Hall Of Fame inductee transitioned from an early career as an iron worker into the greyhound game in the 1960s. He would build a breeding and racing dynasty, with his Longmont, Co., farm as its headquarters, that spanned the country and would become the most successful greyhound program in Colorado history.

It was the “Pat C” prefix that would distinguish Pat’s greyhounds and his operation—a prefix that would endure on the national scene for many decades, right on up to today.

Bluffs Run gets the 2015 stakes season underway Wednesday, March 18, with the opening round of the $60,000 3-8 Mile Derby.

A field of 64 greyhounds will begin the chase. Leading the charge is the defending champion Splish Splash from the Black Kennel.

Splish Splash, a 61 pounder born Sept. 2, 2011 out of Kiowa Mon Manny – Patch on Monday, shocked the field last year. A 22-1 longshot, she broke on top from the three box and ran away from her rivals in posting a box-to-wire triumph, winning by eight and a half lengths.

Greyhound Owner and Breeder Richard Maddock Passes Away

Greyhound owner and breeder Richard Maddock, of Kirkwood, Mo., passed away Jan. 8. He was 72.

Mr. Maddock, who struggled with health issues, was a member of the NGA for more than 20 years. He was a frequent attendee and participated enthusiastically at NGA auctions during National meets in Abilene for a number of years. He would be a familiar visual at NGA sales--seated in his wheelchair, perched at one of the corners in the auction ring, close to the auctioneers.

Doc does it again

Doc does it again | Greyhound Racing | Scoop.it

"The old man showed us he's still got it," said trainer John Graham of 2013 All-American Kiowa Jordan Doc that turns four-years old this month. Last year Doc (Flying Penske x Kiowa Tiffany) made history in the same stakes by recording the fastest winning time of 30.30. The race was a thriller and Doc had his work cut out for him when he had to make up ground on the fleet-footed Husker Magic that was eyeing the prize. Doc won the stakes by a nose. “He is just awesome and to continue to win stakes races at his age against that phenomenal field says it all about Doc,” said Graham.

Kiowa Jordan Doc recently returned to racing after being sidelined since July. “It was a bummer that he didn’t get to defend his title in the Fall Sprint but I wasn’t going to push him,” said Graham. Doc’s backers were paid $15.20 for Doc’s upset over the bet favorite Husker Magic in 30.51. Doc’s win last year was historic with his blazing time. This year he marked history again by becoming only one of three Greyhounds in the 90-year history of the stakes to win a back-to-back title. Fred Whitehead’s Como (1965 & ’66) was the first. Sixteen years later Keith Dillon’s Perceive repeated the feat (1982 & ’83).

CSI: Animal Abuse

CSI: Animal Abuse | Greyhound Racing | Scoop.it

When a dog or cat comes into the clinic with injuries caused by blunt-force trauma, it probably was hit by a car. Or was it?

Veterinarians generally rely on their instincts to tell the difference between an accident and abuse. But eliminating some of the guesswork in suspected cases of cruelty or neglect could help get animals out of violent households and produce evidence to prosecute their abusers.

Nida Intarapanich, a third-year veterinary student at Cummings School, took up that cause, one at the forefront of the emerging field of veterinary forensic science. She has developed a statistical modeling tool that looks at injury patterns to help veterinarians distinguish between accident and intent. And because an abused animal often signals more widespread violence in a household, her work could help human victims, too.

Floridians reject idea of converting tracks to casinos

loridians soundly reject converting greyhound facilities into casinos without a voter referendum, according to a new survey conducted on behalf of the Florida Greyhound Association (FGA), an advocacy group comprised of racing greyhound owners, breeders and kennel operators. The Mason-Dixon poll found that nearly 70 out of 10 voters (69 percent) believe the Legislature should not end live greyhound racing and then convert those pari-mutuel facilities into a casino without first receiving voter approval.

“Floridians are sending a loud message to the Legislature, don’t turn greyhound tracks into casinos on your own,” said Jim Blanchard, president of the FGA. “So-called ‘decoupling’ would not only subvert the will of voters who have repeatedly rejected casino gaming but would also cost 3,000 Florida families their jobs.”

"We usually go two rounds possibly three before we start cutting based on how the points are lining up."

Seven males and three females captured the win points in the first round series. Hess Racing won back-to-back qualifiers with KB's Wild Bronco in race two and WS Sprang Over in race three. Sprang Over clocked the fastest qualifying time of 30.12. The highly competitive fields only allowed for the largest win margin of four-lengths. Kiowa Jordan Doc to defend Inaugural title

Kiowa Jordan Doc to defend Inaugural title | Greyhound Racing | Scoop.it

Last year’s All America Team member Kiowa Jordan Doc (Flying Penske x Kiowa Tiffany) is back to defend his title in Derby Lane’s 90th year opening Inaugural stakes that will kick off the New Year and the 90th for the St. Petersburg, FL facility. The accomplished 66-pound male has participated in twelve prior stakes. Last year Doc turned in a box to wire in the final and recorded the fastest winning time in the Inaugural stakes history of 30.30 for trainer John Graham. Co-owner Kay Smith proudly picked up her award at the 2014 Spring Nationals for Doc’s dual-distance accomplishments in 2013.

Kiowa Jordan Doc began his career at Derby Lane in 2012 by winning his maiden debut by six lengths. The Pauline O’Donnell kennel star has circled the track 174 times boasting a 77% money finish in his career and has been a quiniela finisher 52% of his starts. A win in the race by Doc would be historic. Only two greyhounds in the history of the Inaugural lay claim to a repeat win. Fred Whitehead kennel’s Como won back-to-back titles in 1965 and 1966. Sixteen years later Keith Dillon’s Perceive won in 1982 and opened the 1983 meet with a consecutive Inaugural title.
