10 Things That Make A Big Difference To Hiring Managers

10 Things That Make A Big Difference To Hiring Managers | Job Advice - on Getting Hired | Scoop.it
Want to make the best impression possible? Here are 10 “little” things that make a big difference to hiring managers in your job search.
Trish Sadar's insight:

10 super tips to follow.

I particulary agree with the importance of a candidate's online image!

I was talking to one of my students last week, and he couldn't believe that recruiters and hiring managers actually take the time to check someone's online image.  He asked me what can I do about it.

Well, there are a couple of things....

1.  Clean up the images, language, photographs online.  You can do this manually, and there is also software out there such as facewash that some students have successfully used as a starting point.

2.  What your friends do online -- if they are associated with you, then it is a reflection on your brand online.

Also, hiring managers want to select candidates who are professional and are excellent role models for their brands.

So before you start applying online...take a look at what your online footprint says about you.

Please let us know what you think.

Are you waiting for the phone to ring?

Are you waiting for the phone to ring? | Job Advice - on Getting Hired | Scoop.it
Trish Sadar's insight:

So you landed an interview, did your best, sent the follow up letter, and now you sit and wait for the phone to ring -- right?

Wrong!

When it comes to landing the job of your dreams....remember, successful people are willing to do what unsuccessful people are not.

Did you ask if it was okay to follow up, and inquire as to the ideal method and timeline? Have you sent personal follow up notes in the mail to each person you met with? Have you professionally followed up when you said you would?

Did you do anything else to demonstrate that you are the best candidate and the right fit for the role, department, and organization?

I had indivduals send action plans, send a one page summary of what working for the company meant to them, sent a thank you box of cookies, etc.

So ask yourself, Did I do everything that I could (within reason) to put my best foot forward to get hired?  If you did....pat yourself on the back and move forward.  Doing your best is all that you can do, and now you have to leave the rest to the employer.

But if you didn't what will you do the next time?

Would love to hear stories on what you did to land the job....Make it a great day!

Are you right or wrong?

Are you right or wrong? | Job Advice - on Getting Hired | Scoop.it
Trish Sadar's insight:

Are you asking the right questions to help you reach your potential?  When it comes to our careers, if we hit a bump in the road .....take a deep breath, pause, and find out the type of questions you are asking yourself.

Let me explan...If we are in the excuse zone, the entitlement zone, or the assumption zone -- they all lead to a dead end.

Sample of the Wrong Questions:

Why aren't they calling me back, I am perfect for that job or

Why don't they ever promote me....I am more qualified than that person

The above are examples of wrong questions because we are pointing our fingers at everyone else, and we only have control over our own actions.

Sample of Right Questions:

What can I do to increase the chances of my resume being seen and getting a call back?

How can I find out what I need to learn in order to be considered for the next promotion?

So if you want to feel more empowered on what you can do about your career mobility....I urge you to start asking the What and How questions because we need to take the wheel and decide to own our careers.

Hope this helps....while the solutions may not guarantee positive results, you will feel empowered to take action.  When one approach doesn't work, keep asking the right questions and changing your approach.

Make it a great day!

10 Things they won't tell You (but I will)

10 Things they won't tell You (but I will) | Job Advice - on Getting Hired | Scoop.it
I've put together the most common reasons why a recruiter writes a candidate off. You may not like what you read, but they all can be improved upon.
Trish Sadar's insight:

Funny however truthful article!

I can't tell you how many times managers have not hired someone:

-Who talked too much, interrupted, and was a poor listener.

-Did not present themselves as professional in attire and grooming.

-Did not have good eye contact and body language.

-Had a limp handshake.

-Arrived late and had alot of excuses.

-Did not do their homework, lacked preparation about the position and the company.

-Came across as overly confident.

-Who was not a teamplayer.

-Talked down to the interviewer.

-Who was rude to passing employees.

-Parked in the wrong spot in the parking lot, and did not follow instructions.

-Talked poorly about past employers and bosses.

-Asked about drug testing.

-Talked about vacation time and pay raises during the first interview.

....

I want you to see this process like a race and you are competing against other capable and experienced runners.  If you want to be hired, you have to be willing to do more than others to prepare and to ace the interview.  Simply doing what others do may not be enough.

Besides your experience and skills....why would the hiring manager hire you?  If you don't know -- how will the hiring manager know?

We would love to hear some of your suggestions that have helped youace the interview and land the job!

Make it a great day!
