The geography of my stuff

The geography of my stuff | Geography classroom | Scoop.it

This unit of work focuses upon the interconnections and inter-relationships that link teenage consumers living in the UK with societies and environments overseas (where the goods they purchase are made). As well as explaining how these connections work - and why they have come into being - the unit introduces students for the first time to some of the moral, ethical and environmental issues that are associated with the global trade in consumer goods (including child labour and food miles).

Maree Whiteley's insight:

"Plenty of hands-on examples and case studies are provided that will help teachers deliver these themes in an accessible and interactive way. Students will gain a first impression of some key ideas relating to retail land use from convenience stores to retail parks"

Geographical Association - Exploring the Geography of Food

Geographical Association - Exploring the Geography of Food | Geography classroom | Scoop.it

Food is a basic human need, and right. The production, acquisition and consumption of food occupies everyone to some extent, and connects everyone with the environment, the water cycle, interdependence, global trade and aid, and the changing nature and location of industry. This family of courses explores the development of the coming 'perfect storm' and the relationships between food and the geography curriculum.

Maree Whiteley's insight:

Where in the world does our food come from?

Sierra_Mcswagger's curator insight, September 10, 2014 10:02 AM

This video is primarily talking on the widely known topic of migration. 3 percent of the worlds population is living away from there place of birth. The push of migration from places include poverty, war, and environmental disasters. The migration pull in some places are because of  economic opportunity, and political freedom. Migration is increasing, and is thought of as a bad thing.(s.s.)

Aurora Rider's curator insight, October 7, 2014 8:59 PM

This video is great for going over the many different aspects that go along with migration. It talks about what migration is and the reasons why people migrate known as push and pull factors. It talks about the different types of migration such as asylum seakers and illegal immigration. It mentions the disadvantages and advantages of migration.

Katelyn Sesny's curator insight, October 31, 2014 12:27 PM

A great YouTube video- discussing the controversy of international migration among other things that fall into place of the disapproval of international migration. -UNIT 2

Just for fun! It will be engaging video for children to begin to "think like a geographer". A good attention grabber and captivate the children's mind into the world of geography! The video gives examples of how in geography we label landmarks and events in our environment with unique terms. Overall, gives the perspective we are to hold when studying geography.

Zoe Pyke's curator insight, August 27, 2013 5:16 AM

TED talks are a great way to obtain information in generally short bursts. This clip is only 3 1/2 minutes long so easily watchable by younger studnets without them losing interest.

It could be used as an engaging way to start a unit on water and water usage.

The clip uses language that is understanable and graphics that make the information clearer and easier to digest as well as being something interesting to watch.

After Earth: Science

After Earth: Science | Geography classroom | Scoop.it

Although the film is fiction-based, it does provide a platform to promote educational discussion about the science of global change, land use change, introduced species and mass extinction: subjects that tie in with the themes of the movie. Our studio in the US commissioned and worked closely with respected US Dr. Joe Levine who co-authored the student textbook ‘Miller and Levine BIOLOGY’ to develop several lesson plans in association with the release of After Earth.

Maree Whiteley's insight:

The lesson plans are a great tool for teachers to excite their students about global change in an entertaining and informative way

The DECD interpretation of the Australian Curriculum- Geography or History (Humanities) is intended to engage students  in learning to develop the concepts, skills and knowledge that will enable them to think like Geographers or Historians; an important part of education that directly builds students’ capabilities for effective Global Citizenship

The importance of Geography and History in this role is addressed elsewhere in this blog but it may be worth reminding ourselves of Goal 2 of the Melbourne Declaration.
