I've done a comparison on a Fuji X-Pro 1 file using The new Photoshop ACR 7.4 andRaw Photo Processor 64, the excellent Mac platform raw converter. Different software but I processed each with no sharpening added and only added a slight amount in Photoshop later. I used the same values for each file. Okay - starting to wake up now that it’s past noon. Stayed up really really late getting to my selects for images shot Monday and Tuesday. I blame it on VSCO film 03 - it’s so freaking fun that I just couldn’t stop playing around every few images that I got through. I only used it on four or five of what I consider my selects and even then I keep a non-funky version as a deliverable.
On to my Fuji update. I promised someone via twitter I would do it this week so here it is. The good the bad and the ugly. To catch you up I have had those cameras for quite a few months and have used them quite a bit. The X100 I still have not shot in any serious way but I am going to change that. I swear. Next real shoot I will shoot it - end of story. The X-Pro-1 on the other hand is getting sold.
Hello !! This is a look back at the last 10 months or so since the X-Pro was launched. I have tried to include as much as I can can from locations such as Marrakech, London, Washington DC, New Yor...
01. Katy McGee wears Miss Jones lingerie. lit with daylight. 18mm setting on the 18-55mm Fujifilm zoom. This was a skills enhancement shoot with my friend and fellow pro photographer Brett Symes.
I had a conversation today via Twitter with @rwboyer (website: http://photo.rwboyer.com ) regarding the “film-like-ness” of the X-Pro1 and digital cameras in general. First off, he’s a very cool cat and his passion for photography runs deep.
In July 2011 I purchased the Fujifilm X100 camera. I was struck by the liberty offered by such a small yet powerful camera. Coming from a full frame DSLR setup I have to confess the initial months were a love hate relationship.
Ahead of our full review, here are 40 JPEG photos taken with the new Fujifilm XF 14mm f2.8 R compact system camera lens. We're currently testing the Fujifilm 14mm lens with the XE-1 body.
Yesterday I was up before the sun to shoot a music video for a young folk singer/songwriter 'Issy Ferris'. I serendipitously heard her song 'My Treasure' on youtube and knew instantly I HAD to make...
I just sold my beloved Fujifilm X100! It's a camera that has been with me since July 2011, it became my favorite, in some ways even more than my Leica M9-P if you can believe that.
Join Zack Arias and David Hobby on Wednesday, March 6 at 6:30pm as they share their experiences on working with the X-series of cameras, particularly the new X100S and how the cameras have shaped their recent outlook to photography.
"Lightroom 4.4 Release Candidate includes a correction to the demosaic algorithms for Fujifilm cameras with the X-Trans sensor. This specifically impacts the following cameras:
I was watching the sky last week out of a bedroom window, a storm had just cleared, I watched and took images of it over half an hour or so. Given the restriction on my viewpoint I wanted to see what sort of images i would get over a few days. It was quite challenging, but spending the same amount of time at the window at around the same time of day, made me think quite alot about other people who have a restricted view on the world. Makes you think? All the images were shot with a Fuji X pro 1 and a zuiko 100mm f2.8 lens. The images were all shot as jpegs. The fuji produces such wonderful colour, its very accurate and shows the scene exactly as i saw it. This camera continues to suprise me everyday. So much so in fact that the Nikons are getting very dusty.
One of the things I like to do in my spare time is trying to capture a specific film look.
In the past couple of weeks I've been using Capture One 7.02 to do some panachromatic film simulations which is really spectacular for doing that. I found that Lightroom, or at least at this time hasn't quite got there for me (yet), but I have been spending more time in Capture One for doing black and white conversions.
In Lightroom, I've been trying to simulate popular films, with some success.
I had been using 900+ colour reference charts, and comparing them to how others have done their presets and also how companies like FujiFilm has been trying to simulate them in their own cameras (such as the X-Pro1).
Even FujiFilm's simulations are still not quite where I'd expect them.
hpc's insight:
Not realy specific to fuji camera, but nethertheless intereting for the velvia fans.
This should be a fun comparison. I have the pleasure of having three of the best mirrorless cameras around in my possession right now: a newly acquired Fuji X-E1 with 35mm f/1.4, my trusty Olympus...
I recently read a blog post about Harold Feinstein and a book that presents a retrospective look at his works. He was a master of b/w photography and a disciple of one of my photographer heroes, W. Eugene Smith. You can see Feinsteins photos here. He wrote about his relationship with Gene Smith here. During my years as a darkroom silver based printer I occasionally worked with a very toxic compound that was commonly referred to as 'bleach'. I was initially drawn to using it because of Gene Smith's extensive manipulation of his prints using it. Feinstein reminisces about Gene Smith's use of Potassium Ferrocyanide here. Many of Smith's iconic photographs were altered using 'bleach' to accentuate very small details as highlights. Because of the shapes and sizes of those tiny details, which created much of the drama in Smith's images, dodging would have been impossible.
Montreal winters aren't just cold: they tend to throw humidity into the mix as well. And that's a much different kind of cold, one that seeps in and freezes your bones to their very core no matter what you do.
One of the things I miss about shooting slide film is the ease of it. I’d load the film, shoot it, drop it off to be developed, and get the wonderful experience of viewing a few (hopefully) nice photos on the light table.
Luckily for photo enthusiasts who want to take nice pictures, but aren’t willing or able to spend thousands of dollars for a full dSLR kit, the compact or mirrorless market offers plenty of good options. I recently decided to jump in myself, and although I briefly considered a Sony, I ended up buying the X-Pro1. I’ve had it for almost two months now, and I’m very happy with my purchas
It’s not something I’m used to doing. But every now and then, it’s good to get out of your comfort zone. Most of my photography so far has been rooted in travel. I’ve taken quite a few pictures in the DMV, but the majority of them have been urban landscapes near tourist spots. I took my new Fuji out with my 5D recently to the Lincoln Memorial. Both performed splendidly, but there was something special about the look of my Fuji photos, even the ones that weren’t necessarily the best of the shoot. I can’t wait to take my new camera with me on a trip overseas. Although the X-Pro1 is not pocket size, it’s a lot easier to carry around with than a dSLR. Even after I buy new lenses, I can still carry the whole kit around in a small bag. It also makes me want to take pictures of the most mundane things in my neighborhood that I hadn’t bothered to look twice at before. ........
So as day 50 feels like an achievement I thought I would use a couple of photos I took today and discuss my process, from taking the photo to uploading it on my blog! I am by no means an accomplish...
