Why I had the Fujifilm X-S20 + XF8mm f/3.5 R WR Over 2 Months Ago by  bigheadtaco

Introducing the new Fujifilm X-S20 + XF8mm f/3.5 R WR lens. Some of you might be wondering why I had an early preview of the newest additions to the X Series line-up. The only reason was that I was commissioned to take some lifestyle photos for Fujifilm Japan for the launch. Since the camera, lens, and firmware were all pre-production, I was not allowed to do a review, which is fair. However, I was allowed to play around with it and check out all the new features. I did get a media brief just before the launch, but this was after I had to return the camera. Because of this, I inserted text where necessary. I look forward to getting a production copy next month and conducting a full review. Please check out my other video where I'm on the streets of Vancouver, and also read my article at Fujilove Magazine, including more photographs.

Why I Don't Like the Fujinon XF 35mm f/1.4 for Street Photography

hpc's insight:

Review of Fujinon XF 35mm F1.4 R lens for street photography
- Context of the lens in the Fuji ecosystem and personal experience
- Comparison with other 30-35mm lenses from Fujifilm

Fujifilm lenses have different features and designs
- Linear motor is quieter and faster in newer lenses
- Some lenses are designed to have character and personality

The lens is great for portrait photography but has limitations for street photography.
- The lens is inconspicuous and lets in a lot of light, making it great for portrait photography.
- For street photography, the lens is not particularly special unless shooting at F 1.4 and has limitations in darker environments.

F 1.4 aperture adds magic to lens
- The lens loses some special qualities at larger apertures
- F 1.4 aperture creates separation and pleasing background blur

The 35mm F1.4 lens has a unique personality and composition limitations.
- The lens is best used in certain compositional situations, requiring physical separation from the subject to the background.
- The autofocus is slower and louder than other lenses, making the photo experience less pleasant.

The Fujifilm 50mm F1.0 lens has noisy and imprecise autofocus, but offers unique character and personality.
- The autofocus is distracting and imprecise, making it difficult to focus on the intended subject.
- The lens offers unique character and personality, but at a higher price point and with trade-offs in autofocus performance.

Lens not ideal for street photography
- Autofocus issues with face/eye detect and continuous autofocus
- Better suited for events, night street photography, or portraits

Review of the 35mm 1.4 lens and 70-300mm lens
- Autofocus performance difference between the two lenses was noticeable
- 70-300mm lens is one of the favorite lenses and 30mm macro is becoming a favorite too
