Working remotely this past year has meant mostly accessing FileMaker systems over a WAN. This has posed immediate challenges to systems that were not originally designed with that in mind.
So…let's talk about Transactions: understanding what they are, how they relate to CRUD operations and database normalization, and how you might use transactional concepts to improve FileMaker performance, especially over a WAN. If you are struggling with solution performance, we’ll look at a way to build a baseline so you can have a starting point as to what you can strive for in terms of solution performance. We will look at examples in 2 areas: • Delivering Data • CRUD Operations We will look at the impact unstored calculations can have on a solution and see dramatic differences in solution performance when data is denormalized. We’ll also discuss a few tools available that help track the number of remote calls from the client to the server along with network traffic. Because this topic has such deep ramifications, I plan to do some follow-up presentations on this topic. The main goal is to demonstrate the value of denormalizing data and the benefits that Transactions can provide users.
