Teach Your Students the Modern Slide Design That Many Presentation Specialists Now Advocate

The complaint of "death by PowerPoint" is often voiced by audiences forced to sit through screen after screen of overstuffed bullet-point slides.

But presentations don't need to be so dull. As students learn in Bovee and Thill texts, the most important design decision for a presentation is whether to use conventional structured slides or the looser, free-form slides that many presentation specialists now advocate. If the text you're currently using is teaching only conventional bullet-point slide design, it isn't preparing students for the expectations of today's workplace.

What's New in Teaching Business Communication? A New Organizing Model for Business Messages

"Storytelling might seem like an odd subject for a business communication course, but narrative techniques can be an effective way to organize messages in a surprising number of business situations."

Bovee & Thill's Online Business Communication Magazines's curator insight, September 18, 2013 7:51 PM

Storytelling can also be used for so many things—from training employees to enticing investors and customers. Storytelling is such a vital means of communicating that it's hard to imagine one's career going anywhere without the ability to tell a story.

Fortunately, students have been telling stories all their lives, so narrative techniques already come naturally to them; now it's just a matter of adapting those techniques to business situations.

Students have also been on the receiving end of numerous business stories. Storytelling is one of the most common structures used in television commercials and other advertisements. People love to share stories about themselves and about others, too, which makes social media ideal for storytelling.

Career-related stories, such as how someone sought and found the opportunity to work on projects he or she is passionate about, can entice skilled employees to consider joining a firm.

Julie Powell Hall's curator insight, September 18, 2013 8:14 PM

Excellent presentation on storytelling!  It ties directly into my recent dissertation on how using guided reflection (tell me a story about you) in online classes provides scaffolds to encourage reflective thinking.  My dissertation is entitled, "Is my Instructor There for me? A Study of Reflective Practice and Student Perceptions of Online Teaching Presence." It will be in the ProQuest database in a few weeks!

Business Communication Pictorial Gallery on Pinterest, a Virtual Pinboard

Pinterest lets you organize and share all the beautiful things you find on the web. It's a social networking and social publishing site based on photos and videos."

Bovee & Thill's Online Business Communication Magazines's insight:

Pinterest lets you organize and share all the beautiful things you find on the web. It's a social networking and social publishing site based on photos and videos.

Each photo or video is called a "pin." Pins can be grouped into "boards," which are sets of pins focused on a specific topic. Pinterest can be accessed by adding the "Pin it" button to the desktop bookmark bar, "Pin it" buttons added to personal website or blog pages, and the Pinterest iPhone application.

Here's the Business Communication Pictorial Gallery on Pinterest. Each item pinned to a board can then be clicked on to open into a larger picture of the item as well which includes a comment section that allows visitors to create discussions. Each pin can also be liked and/or re-pinned to a board on the visitor's Pinterest profile.

Initially, Pinterest was used for digital scrapbooking as people shared pictures which included almost anything from recipes to cute animals. As Pinterest became more popular, the sharing became more organized ,and creativity began to reveal some amazing things you can do on this site.

The versatility of Pinterest became clear and as new features were incorporated, the platform only became more powerful. Businesses are now incorporating and distributing brand images with messages on Pinterest.

To see Pinterest, visit Bovee & Thill's Business Communication Blog, go to the Quick Links section on the left-hand column, and click on the red button with the large "P." This will take you to the Business Communication Pictorial Gallery. To find other pages of interest, use the search box in the upper left-hand corner of the page. Visit the gallery and other Pinterest pages today.

What's New in Teaching Business Communication: Visual Media Chapter Adds an Important Medium

What's New in Teaching Business Communication: Visual Media Chapter Adds an Important Medium | Exclusive Teaching Resources for Business Communication Instructors | Scoop.it
Bovee & Thill's Online Business Communication Magazines's insight:

Video has become a core business medium. In fact, one could argue that video is almost as revolutionary as social media, given how many business messages that were once delivered in written format are now delivered via video.

And just as document design, presentation slides, web writing, and other tasks moved out of the specialist realm and became mainstream skill expectations, many employees are now expected to be able to do basic video work for training courses, product demos, video news releases, customer service, and other routine applications.

With companies such as Zappos encouraging video uploads from job applicants, video could become significant in employment communication as well.

This video discusses an important medium that has now, for the first time, been integrated into a business communication text's visual media chapter.

Video has become a core business medium. In fact, one could argue that video is almost as revolutionary as social media, given how many business messages that were once delivered in written format are now delivered via video.

With companies such as Zappos encouraging video uploads from job applicants, video could become significant in employment communication as well.

Just as Courtand Bovee and John Thill were the first business communication authors to cover social media, they now once again lead the way in new topic coverage by adding a unique section on video production as part of Chapter 9, Visual Media, in their text, Business Communication Today, 12th Ed.  It guides students through preproduction, production, and post production, with simple hands-on advice at each stage.

Students can learn even more about video production by visiting a website described in one of the book's Learn More features that offers a wealth of advice on producing quality videos.

As more and more companies rely on video for internal and external communication, learning some basic video skills will make students more effective and more valuable communicators. You are strongly encouraged to include video production as part of your full-spectrum business communication course. Business Communication Today, 12th Edition, would be the ideal text for you to use, because it's the only business communication text that offers coverage of business video.

Bovee & Thill's Online Business Communication Magazines's insight:

Has the textbook you've been using to teach business communication become obsolete?

Adapting Persuasive Message Skills to Social Media

Bovee & Thill's Online Business Communication Magazines's insight:

The AIDA model and similar approaches have been successful with marketing and sales messages for decades, but in the social media landscape, consumers are more apt to look for product information from other consumers, not the companies marketing those products. Consequently, today's business communicators need new skills to encourage and participate in these online conversations.

Following these guidelines will help students adapt what they're learning in the course to the new realities of promotional communication: . . .

The widespread adoption of wikis in both business and higher education is a testament to the collaborative value of wiki technology. However, wiki collaboration does require a broader set of skills than traditional business communication requires. It also requires a different approach to communication, one in which the authorial “me” is superseded by the collaborative “us.”Evaluating, editing, and revising the work of other writers.

Before getting your students started on wiki projects, it’s a good idea to offer some coaching in evaluating, editing, and revising the work of other writers. These tips are helpful in a variety of communication situations, of course, but they’re essential for wiki collaboration.

Before making substantive changes to an article, students should consider the following questions:  . . .

Note: You can give your students the opportunity to develop wiki skills in a secure, confidential environment. The unique Bovée/Thill wiki simulator lets students practice evaluating and revising wiki articles using a real, live wiki editor.

Unlike a conventional wiki, however, this system saves each student’s work separately and privately so that you can evaluate his or her ability to assess an article with numerous built-in flaws and make the corrections needed to improve readability and achieve the “you” attitude.
