A casual mention of Kate Raworth’s theory has grown into the basis for decision making in Tomelilla. In 2021 one of the team had been reading an article about the concept of doughnut economics – a circular way of thinking about the way we use resources – and he brought it up. “I just mentioned it casually at a meeting, as a tool to evaluate our new quality of life programme, and it grew from there,” says Stefan Persson, Tomelilla’s organisational development manager.

A new study on Sweden’s largest sustainable urban development project finds that individual Nature-based solutions (NbS) have minimal impact on local climate, emphasizing the need for large-scale, interconnected green infrastructure for substantial cooling. The research, carried out in Stockholm Royal Seaport, utilized a network of wireless sensor stations to monitor real-time temperature variations across different types of NbS: forest parks, green courtyards, rain gardens, green roofs, and lawns.

The housing crisis has become a widely discussed problem in the European political debate, but not everyone agrees on its causes and remedies. In the Netherlands, decades of neoliberal policies have created a system that favours homeowners and property investors, penalises tenants, and limits the availability of social housing. Can sharper ideological messaging around the housing crisis help green and progressive forces mobilise majorities? An interview with Cody Hochstenbach, assistant professor in urban geography at the University of Amsterdam.

On the streets of Paris, thousands of trees are being planted, the city’s distinctive grey zinc rooftops are getting a makeover and workers are installing drinking fountains that release a cooling mist. The changes are all part of the French capital’s “fight against heatwaves”, says First Deputy Mayor Patrick Bloche. “Heat, increasingly, is a problem for Paris.”

Nature-based solutions (NBS) are essential for carbon-neutral cities, yet how to effectively allocate them remains a question. Carbon neutrality requires city-led climate action plans that incorporate both indirect and direct contributions of NBS. Here we assessed the carbon emissions mitigation potential of NBS in European cities, focusing particularly on commonly overlooked indirect pathways, for example, human behavioural interventions and resource savings.

Over the past year and a half we’ve gone on a shared journey to discover how Europe’s cities are evolving to meet the challenges of our rapidly changing world. In our first chapter, focused on the quality of urban life, we went to Rome to explore the turn-of-the-century communities that inspired the modern 15-minute city concept, and to Vienna to learn about the city’s brilliant social housing model.

The City Climate Finance Gap Fund, or the Gap Fund, supports cities with early-stage technical assistance for low-carbon, climate-resilient urban development plans and projects. The Gap Fund has so far attracted €80 million in funds, but it aims to raise as much as €100 million and could eventually unlock an estimated €4 billion in investments. In operation since September 2020, the Gap Fund is a global partnership that helps cities in developing countries plan, prioritise and deliver projects focused on climate change mitigation and adaptation. The Gap Fund also promotes climate-smart urban development plans.

As global climate change intensifies and energy resources dwindle, residential energy consumption becomes a critical challenge. While progress has been made in understanding urban morphology and climate factors in zero-energy residential block design, comprehensive cross-contextual analysis across diverse cultural, geographical, and climatic regions remains limited. This study examines residential blocks in eight cities—The Hague, Singapore, Tallinn, Berlin, Montreal, Vienna, Vantaa, and Zurich—spanning temperate oceanic, tropical rainforest, and humid continental climates.

The beginning of July marked the planet’s hottest week in recorded history, with the average global temperature reaching 17.01 degrees Celsius for the first time. That kind of extreme heat can create major problems for cities: As urban populations switch on air conditioners and fans to keep cool, power grids can struggle to cope with the massive spikes in demand. This week we take a closer look at that challenge and how cities are coping with it.
