Imagine stepping into a city where sustainability isn’t just built upwards but also downwards. While cities worldwide grapple with intensifying climate risks—flooding, heatwaves and infrastructure strain—an untapped solution lies right beneath our feet. The underground isn’t just for subways and parking garages; it holds immense potential for climate resilience, urban sustainability and even equitable development.

In this last article in the series, I turn to what a resilient, sustainable food system could look like. I will first discuss the agronomic side of the system and then the socio-economic part. In my view they are just two aspects of the same system. I hope that I made it very clear, from the three previous articles, how intertwined the economic aspects of the system and the ecological aspects are. This is well reflected in the concept of agro-ecology.

Transport is a traditionally male-dominated sector, and gender-sensitive issues are widely recognised as very relevant. The demands and experiences of women and men justify treating women’s mobility separately, taking into account significant differences in areas like travel and employment patterns, care for children and the elderly and care responsibilities. We typically lack a knowledge base that serves as a tool to improve the quality of women’s travel experience. Such policy will guide how we manage public transport at the forefront of grassroots and gender-informed policymaking around mobility.

All European cities analysed exhibit drying trends over the past 42 years, the report found. London, Paris, Berlin, Stockholm and Istanbul could all see more frequent and long-lasting droughts as a result. Some European cities are facing ‘climate hazard flips’. Barcelona and Madrid are experiencing a particularly strong flip from wet to dry.

Numerous households live in homes that are too cold for their physical and mental health and well-being. But the way we measure fuel poverty across the UK varies wildly, making policymaking solutions harder to come by. On the LSE blog website Abigail McKnight argues that we need a better way of measuring fuel poverty if…

Burning wood for heat is an archetypal human activity; few images conjure up domestic security as powerfully as a bright fire at the hearth. Classified as renewable heat under EU rules, the reality of wood-burning is infinitely more complex: much of it is unsustainable, undermining climate goals and worsening air quality. Rising prices of biomass are also exacerbating inequality, especially in Central and Eastern Europe, where many low-income households depend wholly on firewood for home heating.

A fridge on the street, stocked with fresh food—free for anyone passing by. AMS Institute researcher Joe Llewellyn, BuurtBuik, and MIT Senseable City Lab are piloting a simple but powerful idea: a publicly accessible fridge on the Elandsgracht in the Jordaan where surplus food finds a new home instead of going to waste. The fridge helps ensure good food doesn’t go to waste while supporting those who can use it.

Recent reports have concluded that the transition to cleaner energy is generating jobs and contributing to economic growth. Across the EU, the housing crisis is spiralling out of control. Millions live in overcrowded, inadequate homes, face energy poverty, or are homeless—while rents skyrocket and housing costs devour incomes. In 2023, over 10% of city households spent more than 40% of their income on housing, and rents jumped 18% in just over a decade. Why? Decades of chronic underinvestment in public housing have left governments handing the reins to private developers and investors who drove up prices with speculation. This has created a system that prioritises profits over people. It’s time to rewrite the rules.

The energy transition is becoming more and more complex, new technologies are coming online, old ways of sourcing power are becoming obsolete and geopolitics are tearing up the rulebook. That is why the ability to plan ahead, work through all the options, find the opportunities in our shift toward a greener world and pick as many winners as possible is a skill worth its weight in gold.

Despite the growing urgency of the climate crisis, appetite for ambitious green investments remains low.
