The evidence is clear: the climate crisis is not gender neutral. Climate change is a threat multiplier. As instability intensifies, women are increasingly subject to conflict and its externalities, including gender-based violence and persecution. And because women are disproportionately represented in informal and agricultural sectors, they are among the most vulnerable to resource fluctuations and extreme weather events. Longstanding and deeply rooted economic, social and cultural inequities mean that women are underrepresented in government bodies, financial institutions and key sectors, and consequently have less of a voice in shaping the policies that could mitigate these challenges.

Over the last few decades, our food system has undergone profound changes. Food has never been available in such large quantities, or with such great diversity, even if it is not evenly distributed across the planet. Globalized and ultra-processed foods have invited themselves onto our tables, with major consequences for our health and the environment. But while modes of production and consumption have changed, food continues to shape our emotional and cultural experiences. It remains what connects us to ourselves, to others and, more broadly, to all living things.

Croatia has earmarked EUR 25 million for households at risk of energy poverty. They will use the funds for the energy renovation. The subsidies for households at risk of energy poverty are part of a EUR 652 million package for 2025 launched by the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Green Transition and the Environmental Protection and Energy Efficiency Fund (EPEEF or FZOEU). The incentives will be used for renewable energy sources, decarbonization of the district heating system and road traffic, and waste management.

Europe’s transition to a clean energy system requires unprecedented investment, but today’s financing tools fail to unlock the full potential of citizen-led energy initiatives. Energy communities can mobilise billions of euros in renewable energy investments, yet their potential remains untapped due to complex state aid rules, inaccessible funding mechanisms, and burdensome regulations.

Rolling out strategic net-zero technologies like heat pumps and geothermal energy will help Europe cut its over-reliance on gas imports from overseas, argue Thomas Pellerin-Carlin, a member of the European Parliament, and Mohamed Ridouani, Mayor of Leuven. The shifting tides of geopolitics have once again exposed Europe’s vulnerability: outsized reliance on imported gas. In 2023, the European Union’s gas import dependency stood at a staggering 90%, leaving households and businesses exposed to price volatility.

The transition of Europe’s building stock is not just an environmental necessity, but also a social and an economic imperative. Our research in Denmark and Poland shows that delivering homes that are both affordable and sustainable is feasible. The EU, governments and public banks have the opportunity to turn this momentum into a real solution for the housing crisis.

In this episode, Nicola speaks to narrative strategist Ruth Taylor of the Common Cause Foundation about the ways in which adverts shape our priorities and attitudes to social and environmental issues through appealing to certain cultural values. Ruth offers her take on adverts from Pepsi, Volvo and Apple which seem to appeal to intrinsic values like social unity or caring for nature, but may actually end up undermining these values. Finally, Ruth shares her thoughts on how the advertising industry needs to change in order to genuinely play a positive role.

Storms and flooding across Europe last year affected a total of 413,000 people, led to the loss of at least 335 lives and are estimated to have cost at least €18 billion in damages. Last year was the hottest year on record for Europe, with record-high annual temperatures in almost half of the continent. The latest European State of the Climate report from the EU’s Copernicus service (C3S) shows that 45 per cent of days were much warmer than average, and 12 per cent were the warmest on record.

While major cities face severe housing shortages, Europe also has a vacant property problem. In 2011, an estimated 38 million homes stood empty across the continent. While there are no more up-to-date numbers, it's likely to be still true: OECD data from 2021 revealed that over 10% of homes in Hungary, Cyprus, Slovenia, and Finland are vacant. As of May 2022, two million apartments in Germany were empty. This is especially the case in rural areas, like in Italy and Spain, where entire villages are deserted as people move from the countryside to larger urban areas.
