From zero to wheels: Zaragoza’s journey to a cycling city

From zero to wheels: Zaragoza’s journey to a cycling city | Energy Transition in Europe | www.energy-cities.eu | Scoop.it
In 2007, Zaragoza was not a city of cyclists. With bicycles accounting for less than 0.5% of daily trips, and minimal infrastructure limited to the urban periphery, cycling was largely absent from daily life and policymaking. There was no regulation, no coordinated institutional support, and most importantly, no cycling culture. Yet within two decades, Zaragoza has transformed into one of Spain’s most bicycle-friendly cities—an achievement rooted in political leadership, smart planning, and consistent public engagement.

Deadly heatwaves are the new reality – we need to transform the UK’s cities and towns to survive them | Hannah Martin | The Guardian | Energy Transition in Europe | www.energy-cities.eu | Scoop.it
In the UK, we are unprepared at every level for the extreme weather caused by climate breakdown. Whether it’s unbearably hot buildings in the summer, our damp and cold homes (some of the leakiest in Europe) filled with mould in the winter, our unprotected towns built on flood plains, or our unfit-for-purpose train tracks that get shut down at the slightest weather warning, the climate crisis is already wreaking havoc on public and private infrastructure – and it’s only getting worse.

Using behavioural insights to encourage energy efficiency | Local Government Association

Using behavioural insights to encourage energy efficiency | Local Government Association | Energy Transition in Europe | www.energy-cities.eu | Scoop.it
In Devon, residents face a cost-of-living crisis and rising fuel poverty, with limited engagement in energy-efficient home improvements. Social Engine collaborated with six councils to understand residents' attitudes and behaviours towards retrofitting using behavioural insights. A trial delivered through social media ads directed people to information on loft insulation, testing two approaches with varying messages. The trial reached 205,324 people and showed that roof imagery and social norm messaging were most effective at encouraging people to read further information on loft insulation. Lessons learned highlighted the need for tailored communication strategies and evidence-based action plans to encourage energy saving actions, equipping councils with the confidence to apply these findings going forward.

Empowering Communities

Empowering Communities | Energy Transition in Europe | www.energy-cities.eu | Scoop.it

As the European Union steers towards its ambitious 2050 goals of carbon neutrality, energy initiatives are finding success in inclusivity, transparency, and co-design.

Change is taking place at regional and local levels via energy communities, which place energy ownership and distribution in the hands of the people, ensuring equitable and democratic access to a vital resource. In Europe’s cities, Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plans (SECAPs) are helping local officials to plot and implement new policies hand-in-hand with citizens.

Make our communities the new power hubs, says Future Generations Commissioner, as he urges Wales to double ambition for community energy

Make our communities the new power hubs, says Future Generations Commissioner, as he urges Wales to double ambition for community energy | Energy Transition in Europe | www.energy-cities.eu | Scoop.it

Local power, owned and run by communities, can be the key to solving Wales’ future energy needs, says the Future Generations Commissioner.
Welsh Government needs to be more ambitious, so Wales has more solar, wind and water energy sources owned by and earning money for, local people, said Derek Walker.
Mr Walker, whose role is to challenge government on how they’re improving lives for people born in the future, wants to see more schools, health centres and community buildings in Wales powered by renewable energy, where communities earn and save money from the energy themselves.
