This is Part 1 of a two-parter, about how the housing crisis causes debt-bondage and wage-slavery, and how the housing Commons can release people from debt and give them freedom to do what they know needs to be done.

In Stroud Commons, we’re looking to find ways to speed up the building of the commons – especially the housing commons, which we were talking about in terms of ‘the rock on which the commons can be built’ before we’d even formed the core group in Stroud.

The Cool Heating Coalition has started to bring the message on a sectoral approach for heating and cooling decarbonisation to the European Commission as it prepares for the 2024-2029 legislative cycle. In July, we sent a letter to President von der Leyen emphasising that decarbonised and renewable heating and cooling must be made a key objective when setting our 2040 climate target, one of the first major decisions that the new Commission will have to take. The political will is growing: 15 Member States asked the same of the Commission earlier this year.

European cities’ commitments to achieving climate neutrality even ahead of the overall EU horizon of 2050 is truly inspiring, but as time progresses it occasionally comes to light that the reality proves tougher than well-meaning objectives.

That’s why the Austrian capital, Vienna, has decided to add an extra layer of commitment by making its climate-neutrality goal a legal mandate with the recent adoption of the Vienna Climate Act.

What Would a Real Renewable Energy Transition Look Like? | Energy Transition in Europe | www.energy-cities.eu | Scoop.it
Humanity’s transition from relying overwhelmingly on fossil fuels to instead using alternative low-carbon energy sources is sometimes said to be unstoppable and exponential. A boosterish attitude on the part of many renewable energy advocates is understandable: overcoming people’s climate despair and sowing confidence could help muster the needed groundswell of motivation to end our collective fossil fuel dependency. But occasionally a reality check is in order.
