The Finnish KiVa program and NYC's Respect for All initiative are transforming school environments by fostering empathy, diversity, and inclusion. Learn about the powerful impact of these programs and the personal story of a mother who chose empathy as a response to her daughter's bullying behavior.
In the heart of Finland, a revolution against school bullying has taken root, spearheaded by the innovative KiVa program. This initiative, a beacon of hope in the fight for safer educational environments, not only addresses bullying head-on but empowers the silent witnesses - the bystanders - to intervene. Halfway across the globe, in New York City, the Respect for All program mirrors this commitment, promoting diversity, inclusion, and a zero-tolerance policy towards harassment.
It is time for all of us to turn our attention to these students, including the activity participants at schools in Kansas. Empathy is so important. No matter who you are — a parent, teacher, coach, athletic administrator, performing arts director or anyone else who interacts with teens — we can all play a part in looking out for them.

You might have wondered, why does the Roots of Empathy Program use a baby? How does this work? Our program offers an innovative and unconventional way of fostering emotional literacy and empathy in children by bringing babies into primary classrooms. The program’s primary focus is the parent-baby relationship, which is considered the most powerful example of empathy in the world. Children witness firsthand how parents attune to their baby’s emotional state and physical needs, which helps the baby develop a sense of security and regulate their emotions.
By observing the baby’s emotional and physical development, children gain a better understanding of their own feelings and the feelings of others.

The intent of the Cross the Line is to make students aware of differences and similarities and teach them tolerance for others. The aim was to develop empathy for those who differ from them in thoughts or deeds, according to Superintendent Brian Doelger, Ed.D.
Its execution at Shelter Island School clearly missed the mark, he said.
This month we are exploring the theme of empathy with students as a part of their mental health skill building. Empathy is about being able to consider what someone else may be going through and imagining how they might be feeling or thinking. It is about walking in another person’s shoes – about listening to another perspective non-judgmentally.
It’s about voicing our understanding of their emotions and validating them. It’s about recognizing the humanity of others and challenging ourselves to be present. Empathy is often the first step toward compassionate action and helping others.

The teachers in our faculty are all part of The Danish Society for the Promotion of Life Wisdom in Children, founded in 2007. We are a small, self-constituted association with just nine members who share an interest in the consequences for children of the rapid changes and drastic breakdown of values which we are currently experiencing, as well as the great opportunities that are at hand. We came together to try and formulate an answer to the question:
What is the most important and most valuable thing that can be done for children to
Teachers have a full plate during the age of COVID-19, hyperpartisanship, legislative debates, and standardized testing. After repeated school shootings, including the one last month in Uvalde, Texas, teachers must also worry about protecting their students—and themselves—from gun violence. To debunk white nationalism, teachers don’t need to design lessons from scratch or revamp curricula. We have the ability to utilize existing content to foster empathy among our students and to help them build bridges with those different from themselves.
Supportive student-teacher relationships can improve student engagement, behavior, and learning. In contrast, antagonistic relationships can generate harmful cycles: students misbehave; teachers punish students; students respond by acting out. These cycles lead to suspended students, frustrated teachers, and disrupted classrooms.
They have issues with sharing, being very overexcited and turn-taking. They’re quite advanced in numbers and letters for their age because they’ve been at home with adults, or they’ve been playing a lot on tablets, but they are very behind socially, the empathy isn’t there.
Six ways to build a school culture that prioritizes understanding the experiences and perspectives of others.
Empathetic leadership, born from an authentic understanding of teachers’ needs, is an essential component of expert school leadership. It’s a mindset that principals and teachers say should inform decision-making and help establish a schoolwide culture of purpose and respect.
When Darcy Bakkegard’s assistant principal delivered especially insightful feedback during a mid-year class evaluation, “it was a transformative moment. I had no idea I was especially good at something as a teacher,” Bakkegard recalls. “She not only forced me to reflect on what I had done, but also helped me become even more strategic about what I’d always done on instinct. She helped me to believe in myself as an educator.”
First, the good news. Anyone — literally anyone — can get better at any skill(as long as you have a long term mindset and approach). The bad news — developing any skill takes time, consistency and effort — something that is harder to encourage now in our time-poor, instant-gratification world.
Developing any skill can be daunting but I urge you to treat it like brushing your teeth. Brush your teeth for 2 minutes and you see nothing. Brush your teeth for 2 minutes twice a day, every day of your life and we know that we will have healthier teeth that will last our lifetime (hopefully).
Empathy is the same. Small incremental moments of understanding, respect and curiosity that over time can shape the health and wellbeing of not only the individual but also those around you.
Better listening requires a shift from a reactive frame of mind to one which is more receptive. For school leaders, daily conversations can often be something that requires immediate action. But when moments allow, shifting thinking from, “what is the solution?” to “what is this person saying to me?” or “what emotions is this person displaying?” can provide powerful results.
In it, she paints a vivid picture of empowered children who, armed with empathy, can navigate the complexities of the world, and become a generation that cares deeply about others beyond their immediate circles.
Perhaps counterintuitively, being mindful and empathetic can come down to maintaining a level of emotional detachment. Student misbehavior can feel like a personal attack to teachers.
School District U-46, a 36,000-student district west of Chicago, has used CPI training for almost 15 years to help teachers retain their calm and remain empathetic. Mark Gonnella, an assistant principal who has trained his colleagues on CPI strategies at an elementary, middle and high school in U-46, finds that “rational detachment” element to be crucial.
Promoting creativity My research has investigated the effect of teaching empathy on the social and emotional skills of creativity in design and technology classes in the UK.
Pupils in year nine – aged 13 to 14 years – from two schools were assessed for their creativity levels both at the start and at the end of the academic school year. We did this using the Torrance Test of Creative Thinking – which measures drawn and written responses to drawn and written prompts.

However, I know that the notion of empathy equating to feelings is a staple in many companies' cultures. I realized that I was viewing empathy as just a notion—something to agree to, to abide by, and that always remained on the surface. I went many years without a grasp on the deeper reality of what empathy means in terms of my instructional design work. Unfortunately, by only skimming the surface level when empathizing with my learners, I realized that I was not meeting their needs.
Using empathy when designing a learning solution enables designers to create a learning experience that meets more than a learner's surface-level needs. Empathetically designed solutions care for the learner as a whole, which can have a positive impact on the individual's experience by increasing engagement and meeting their emotional needs.

The term “empathy” stems from the German word “Einfühlung,” which means the ability to feel into another (literally “in-feeling”). In the scientific literature, as we touched upon above, there are a variety of different discussions and definitions of empathy and the different stages or categories it may be subdivided into, such as emotional contagion, attunement and empathic concern.
Here, we will use one fundamental definition of empathy, which is “the innate capacity to sense and feel the emotions of others.” Per this definition, empathy is not necessarily a good thing: in order to bully someone and do it well, for example, you have to have a quite clear sense of how to hurt them – which requires empathy. And often, when we get caught in the feeling into someone else’s negative moods, depression or anxiety, we ourselves experience traces of these moods.
A lot of teachers’ burn-out stems from empathy fatigue and in turn a lack of training of how to remain in one’s own emotional space without shutting down the emotional reality of the other. When we bring awareness and intention to empathy, we can cultivate compassion.
Why is empathic leadership important? In an era when leaders face intense scrutiny—from the public, political leaders, alumni and parents, and even from within their own institutions—empathic leaders are able to self-reflect, be present, listen actively, identify and act on their emotions, and withhold judgment. These qualities can foster resilience and longevity, especially during a time of disruption. Moreover, by displaying empathy, leaders model qualities that are at the very core of university life: civility, authenticity and openness to vigorous debate.
A former social studies teacher and current education researcher says that active, empathetic listening needs to be taught in civics classes in order to tackle the problems with contemporary democracy -- disinformation, polarization and more.
training young people in the skills of empathy, awareness and compassion.

Being able to empathize with others and care for the people around you allows for true collaboration. We put students into groups, demand them to work together, and then punish them for not doing it “the right way.”
There is this strange glass barrier between life in school and outside of school for students, but by nurturing the connection between the two, we can help them learn how to extend community into the classroom and show them how to build empathy and care for others.
