Polman said the world cannot solve climate change without “an active involvement in business”, but criticised current net zero policies seen throughout businesses.
Speaking at the EcoVadis Sustain 2022 conference, he said: “Most companies are still in the corporate, social, responsibility mode, which is really dealing with doing less bad, 'Let's cut our carbon emission a little bit. Let's cut our deforestation a little bit. Let's cut our plastics in the oceans a little bit'.

The global move to net zero has to be a team effort, with governments, businesses and individuals all working together for the same goal. In the same vein, then, it’s vital for organisations and their suppliers to collaborate to the same end ‒ especially with Scope 3 supply chain emissions making up an estimated 80% of the carbon footprint of any business.
Responsible sourcing, also known as ‘supply chain responsibility’, is a voluntary commitment by companies to take into account social and environmental factors when managing their relationships with suppliers.

At COP26, governments and nations agreed on the Glasgow Climate Pact, which states that carbon emissions will have to fall by 45% by 2030 to keep the Paris Agreement's goal of 1.5°C alive. The Pact urges global companies to reassess their business strategies and carbon footprints in order to avoid dire consequences.
As more global commitments are made, the pressure to reduce emissions builds. So far, over 100 nations have pledged to cut 30% of their methane emissions by 2030. And over 450 financial institutions overseeing $130 trillion in assets said they were committed to aligning their portfolios to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.

The COVID-19 pandemic exposed vulnerabilities in the construction supply chain and procurement process. Although the industry’s overall sustainability performance is improving—according to the fifth annual Business Sustainability Risk & Performance Index—the pandemic highlighted the importance of construction companies assuming a leadership role in integrating environmental sustainability criteria into their procurement processes.
Given the challenges of the pandemic, it is understandable that sustainable procurement, a key catalyst for mitigating sustainability risks across the supply chain, trended downward across all industries, including construction (falling by 0.4 points on the 2019 average to 37.6 in 2020).

How leading companies can and should support mid-sized firms to deliver the latest wave of change
Over the past three decades, sustainable procurement has slowly become an accepted part of doing business for large multinational companies. And while it is not yet business-as-usual for all mid-sized firms, that trend is changing, with the best performers already firmly ahead of the pack.
The latest research from business sustainability ratings expert EcoVadis has found that an increasing number of mid-sized organisations are now very much focused on this area, with a number of them even among the group recognised as Sustainable Procurement Leaders.
This Supply Management Insider whitepaper, produced in partnership with EcoVadis, examines what progress mid-sized firms have made, the benefits and challenges, and how larger businesses can – and should – support them to make further advances for mutual benefit.

Since April 2019, our suppliers are expected to comply with our Supplier Code of Conduct which sets out our standards, values and principles. Sustainability-related questions are included in all our tenders and have a bearing on the overall scoring and selection process. We are now looking to create greater transparency around the ESG performance of our suppliers, and of their own supply chains. To support this, we are partnering with EcoVadis, a global sustainability rating company, to conduct individual sustainability performance assessments of our supply chain partners. We have started to invite our critical suppliers because we want to better understand the alignment between how their business operates, and our sustainability goals. By registering on the EcoVadis platform and undertaking their sustainability assessment, our suppliers will receive a sustainability scorecard from EcoVadis with detailed insights into their strengths, along with any areas for improvement. The assessment results will also be integrated into our sourcing and supplier review processes.
