This sentiment was especially evident at this year’s Sustain conference, where youth climate activists conveyed their focus on climate change and mitigating its effects. Evelyn Acham, the national coordinator of the Rise Up Movement, and Ester Galende-Sánchez, a climate policy researcher for the Basque Centre for Climate Change (BC3), discussed the current severity of the climate crisis and the steps we must take in their session.
Their concerns are warranted.
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reports that “unless there are immediate, rapid and large-scale reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, limiting warming to close to 1.5 degrees Celsius or even two degrees Celsius will be beyond reach.” According to Carbon Trust research, Scope 3 emissions (indirect emissions occurring in a company’s supply chain) represent from 65 percent to 95 percent of a company’s broader carbon impact. While 14 percent of companies rated in the inaugural Carbon Maturity Report 2022 have a publicly available GHG emissions report, only 3.7 percent engage their suppliers on climate action.

Sustainability data firm EcoVadis has raised $500 million to become one of the sector’s first “unicorns”, its co-chief executive told Reuters, as demand from companies to track their performance on environmental and social issues surges.
A unicorn is an unlisted firm valued at $1 billion or more.
The financing, led by private equity firms Astorg and BeyondNetZero, General Atlantic’s climate investing arm, as well as Singapore’s GIC and Princeville Capital, is the largest equity fundraising to date for such a company, EcoVadis said.
It takes the total capital raised by the company to over $725 million.
Used by more than 95,000 businesses across 200 industry categories and 175 countries, EcoVadis provides ratings on environmental, social and governance-related (ESG) issues and helps create plans for companies to improve their score.

Although the international community has generally acknowledged that business globalization reduced poverty in many regions, there is another scourge that is still thriving across sprawling corporate supply chains. Despite increased global attention, resources and regulations, 10 million more people were living in slavery conditions in 2021 compared to 2016, according to International Labour Organization (ILO) estimates. Of the 50 million people worldwide living in slavery — owned by another human being — in 2021, 28 million are trapped in forced labor.
Moreover, it often surprises many that forced labor is highly present in developed countries: More than 52% of all forced labor can be found in upper-middle-income or high-income countries.

What is the biggest challenge in responsible sourcing? Beyond the initial screening process, setting expectations at the beginning of the relationship with the supplier, and ongoing monitoring, companies need to engage suppliers in a continuous improvement journey. No suppliers (or buyers) are perfect in any sustainability topic. Changing suppliers (e.g. discontinuing a supplier with a low sustainability score and selecting and onboarding a new supplier) is expensive, and should be an exception. Long term relationships with suppliers who are committed to progressing on the journey is often a more reliable path, even if they do not have exceptional performance or scores at the beginning.

Singaporean sovereign fund GIC and Princeville Capital also took part in the round, Reuters reported, citing company co-founder and co-CEO Frederic Trinel.
