"Disadvantages of Data URLs The use of Data URLs has several disadvantages which should be kept in mind:
Repeated occurences Data URLs must repeat the string of data each time they are used within a document, so if the same resource is used multiple times, there will be increased bandwidth usage.
Caching Data URLs cannot be cached separately from their containing documents. They must therefore be redownloaded every time the containing document is redownloaded.
Base64 encoding increases data size Base64-encoded Data URLs are 33% larger in size than their binary counterparts. However, if you use gzip content encoding on your webserver, this is reduced to between 0-10%.
Size limitations According to the Data URL specification, browsers need only support Data URLs up to 1024 bytes long. Most browsers, however, will accept much larger ones. Opera limits Data URLs to about 4100 characters, Firefox (Mozilla ) up to 100 KB, Internet Explorer about 32 KB, and WebKit (Safari) doesn't seem to have any limit at all. Typically, however, the benefits of using Data URLs disappear at with larger images, so they are best used only for small (~1-4KB) images. "

On le rabâche depuis plus de 8 ans sur GreenIT.fr : l’empreinte écologique et sanitaire des équipements électriques et électroniques (EEE)* se concentre presque toujours lors de leur fabrication et de leur fin de vie, et non pas lors de leur utilisation. Par ailleurs, le dérèglement climatique n’est qu’une des nombreuses crises écologiques. On peut citer pèle-mêle des crises tout aussi préoccupantes telles que l’écroulement de la biodiversité, l’épuisement des ressources non renouvelables (eau potable, terres arables, etc.). C’est donc un signe encourageant lorsqu’un organisme comme le consortium The Green Grid, propose un indicateur portant sur la qualité de traitement des déchets d’équipements électriques et électroniques (DEEE). Et que cet indicateur n’est pas réservé aux opérateurs de data centers.

The data URI scheme is a URI scheme (Uniform Resource Identifier scheme) that provides a way to include data in-line in web pages as if they were external resources. This technique allows normally separate elements such as images and style sheets to be fetched in a single HTTP request rather than multiple HTTP requests, which can be more efficient. Data URIs tends to be simpler than other inclusion methods, such as MIME with cid or mid URIs. Data URIs are sometimes called Uniform Resource Locators, although they do not actually locate anything remote. The data URI scheme is defined in RFC 2397 of the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). In browsers that fully support Data URIs for "navigation", Javascript generated content can be provided as file "download" to the user, simply by setting window.location.href to a Data URI. One example is the conversion of HTML tables to downloadable CSV using a Data URI like this: 'data:text/csv;charset=UTF-8,' + encodeURIComponent(csv), where "csv" has been generated by Javascript.
