Nigerian virologist delivers scathing analysis of Africa's response to Ebola

Nigerian virologist delivers scathing analysis of Africa's response to Ebola | Ebola Outbreak 2014 | Scoop.it

After Oyewale Tomori finished his talk on Ebola here at the International Meeting on Emerging Diseases and Surveillance, there was stunned silence. Tomori, the president of the Nigerian Academy of Science, used his plenary to deliver a scathing critique of how African countries have handled the threat of Ebola and how corruption is hampering efforts to improve health. Aid money often simply disappears, Tomori charged, "and we are left underdeveloped, totally and completely unprepared to tackle emerging pathogens...

LIBERIA | Meet the girls beating Ebola

LIBERIA | Meet the girls beating Ebola | Ebola Outbreak 2014 | Scoop.it

Two hundred girls are weaving in and out of dirty alleys in the seaside slum of West Point, Liberia. One man, straddling a large drum, keeps time as their voices rise in song: “Believe it, people, Ebola can kill.” Passers-by emerge from concrete buildings to watch the girls, now nearly dancing down the dirt roads in rows of two. One voice rises above the others: “Let’s come together to stop Ebola.”

The march, held on 17 September 2014, marked the official launch of Adolescents Leading an Intense Fight Against Ebola, or A-LIFE. Made up of girls aged 16-19 and a handful of boys around the same age, the group was formed to spread awareness and education about Ebola to help curb its spread in their community. The group members came up with the name themselves and launched their mission on their own.

They have already reached more than 4 000 homes in West Point.

SIERRA LEONE | EVD cases surge amid lack of treatment centres | WFP

SIERRA LEONE | EVD cases surge amid lack of treatment centres | WFP | Ebola Outbreak 2014 | Scoop.it

The number of Ebola cases is surging in Sierra Leone as the country suffers from a lack of treatment centres, while lack of food and basic goods is forcing some people to leave quarantine areas, the United Nations said.

The UN Mission for Ebola Emergency Response (UNMEER) said in its weekly report that a total of 1,062 people had died in Sierra Leone from the virus, with the outbreak particularly virulent in the western areas around the coastal capital Freetown...

...UNMEER reported a growing incidence of families leaving their quarantined homes due to lack of food and non-food items, but did not provide further details.

It said that the World Food Programme (WFP) has been distributing one-month rations to quarantined household and communities in the hard-hit area of Waterloo, in the outskirts of Freetown, where 80 per cent of people in need have already received rations.

Ebola shows up solidarity deficit in Africa growth story

Ebola shows up solidarity deficit in Africa growth story | Ebola Outbreak 2014 | Scoop.it

Africa's economic growth is bounding ahead, despite the Ebola epidemic gnawing at its western shoulder, but some see the continent showing a deficit in solidarity towards the three poor and war-weakened states worst hit by the deadly disease.

While non-African nations from the United States to China and Cuba are deploying resources and health personnel in a U.N.-led surge to aid Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea, fast-growing Africa's states and institutions are facing questions about the level and speed of their own contributions.

With nearly 5,000 people already dead, added urgency comes from the disease's spread in Africa's west, besides isolated cases in the United States and Europe. Mali confirmed its first case on Thursday, becoming the sixth West African nation to be touched by the outbreak.

"It is very clear African governments are not doing enough, given the resources that some countries do have," Gilles Yabi, a Dakar-based independent West Africa analyst, told Reuters...
