When Google began Project Oxygen, they assumed the best predictor of employee success would be university program and grades. Instead, the top of their list was, “being a good coach; communicating and listening well; possessing insights into others (including others different values and points of view); having empathy toward and being supportive of one’s colleagues.” In other words, the most critical factors for success involved collaboration. Later, when they studied their teams in Project Aristotle, they found the top skills were, “equality, generosity, curiosity toward the ideas of your teammates, empathy, and emotional intelligence.” Again, these were the soft skills most closely aligned to collaboration.
But how do you actually do this? How do you create projects that boost collaboration in a K-12 environment?

that it’s important for young people to become economically independent and self-sufficient. But to do that, he argues, they shouldn’t all learn the same thing. Instead, they should be learning to be adaptable, to be innovative, to flow with change, to collaborate and other globalized skills that will apply to whatever area of work they are passionate about pursuing. An education can help expose students to different life paths and support them in finding their passions, while giving them the transferable skills to attack any problem. Education has far out-stretched its humble beginning that only involved reading, writing and understanding the subjects taught. With changing dynamics, students have evolved from information gatherers to learners looking for practical learning that extends beyond examinations and classrooms. Learning today, breaks the barriers of curriculum, seeping into the nuances of the mind and its effect on the overall development of a student. It takes into consideration, the different kinds of learners, their capabilities and interests, skills and will, to make learning more effective, leading to the emergence of deep learning.
