The Big Book of Australian History, by Peter Macinnis

The Big Book of Australian History, by Peter Macinnis | Doing History | Scoop.it

The Big Book of Australian History is a comprehensive history...Written with the help of indigenous advisor and history editor and writer Dr Stephanie Owen Reeder (who won the 2012 NSW Premier’s Young People’s History Prize), The Big Book of Australian History covers many topics, conveniently arranged in ways that will suit students doing projects, but also appealing to kids who just want to browse through it to discover what they might be interested in.  Chapter length varies from six to twelve pages and more, with clear layout and headings, and profuse full-colour illustrations, sourced from the NLA and other libraries.

Maree Whiteley's insight:

And the best thing about this book..."Most importantly it’s mostly written in kid-friendly language which may lure young people  away from Wikipedia which is so often incomprehensible to them."

At the Byron Bay Writers’ Festival :: Ross Coulthart and Peter FitzSimons | Inside History magazine | Doing History | Scoop.it

FitzSimons says that a high school history lesson about the Eureka Stockade changed his life. “Out of pure bloody-mindedness I began to listen, and it was right there and then that my love of Australian history began — my enthrallment with that particular story sparked a wider, burning passion. The action! The characters! The fact — and this was perhaps the key — that this was a real Australian story!”

Inside History sponsored a session at the Byron Bay Writers’ Festival entitled “Living History: Illuminating the Present Through the Past”, where authors Peter FitzSimons and Ross Coulthart spoke about what makes a good story, the legacy of the First World War and bringing history alive for readers.

The Role Of Empathy In Learning

The Role Of Empathy In Learning | Doing History | Scoop.it
The Role Of Empathy In Learning

Learning has to starts and end with the self: What do I know, and how can I relate to the world around me? If successful it should, by design, result in personal and social change through a combination of self-direction, reflection, and collaboration with ideas and the people who have them. Which brings us to empathy. The role of empathy in learning has to do with the flow of both information and creativity.
