Data as a Strategic Asset: Are DMOs ready?

Data as a Strategic Asset: Are DMOs ready? | Destination Management Issues | Scoop.it

In this third report from our international study, we address a topic that is now key to the success of the digital transformation of destination management organisations (DMOs): data.

Whilst the first report showed that DMOs now have a strong social media presence but still struggle to convert this visibility into bookings, and the second report revealed that many organisations are experimenting with artificial intelligence without a proper transformation strategy, this third instalment focuses on a fundamental question: how do DMOs actually make use of their data? How do they organise themselves to make the most of it? And what are the main obstacles to truly data-driven management?

The findings, drawn from a survey of more than 260 DMOs in Switzerland, France, Austria and Canada, paint a mixed picture. Data is now recognised as a strategic resource, but numerous challenges remain in terms of data quality, governance, skills, interoperability and collaboration between stakeholders. The main challenge is no longer so much about accessing data as it is about transforming it into a genuine driver of decision-making, management and innovation.

| Destination Management Issues | Scoop.it

The EU Council sets strategic guidelines for a sustainable and competitive tourism sector

"The Council of the European Union today adopted conclusions outlining a comprehensive overview to build a sustainable and competitive tourism sector for the XXIst century. The conclusions recognise tourism’s vital economic role – contributing 7% of the EU’s gross value added, 10% of jobs, and supporting 4.6 million businesses.

Prioritising sustainability
The conclusions call for the integration of economic, social, and environmental dimensions in all tourism policies. For instance, the conclusions aim to reduce the sector’s environmental footprint through resource efficiency, circularity, decarbonisation, and conservation of nature and biodiversity. At the same time, it focuses on ensuring tourism benefits local communities and respects cultural heritage."

DMOs shift toward destination-as-a-service model in AI era | PhocusWire

DMOs shift toward destination-as-a-service model in AI era | PhocusWire | Destination Management Issues | Scoop.it
Destination marketing organizations (DMOs) are working to find their footing as artificial intelligence (AI) prompts tectonic shifts in online visibility.

With Phocuswright reporting that 56% of travelers are using AI for planning, prioritizing AI visibility is paramount for travel companies.

“Travel discovery is clearly moving from browsing links to getting direct answers, and that shift is understandably unsettling for many DMOs,” said Dave Corner, senior director of destination experience for SimpleView.

The nature of DMOs puts them at a strategic advantage when it comes to being cited in conversational queries. Visibility in AI search isn’t about chasing a trend or out-optimizing an algorithm, he said.

“It’s about leaning into the role DMOs already play best: being the most trusted, reliable source of information about their destination,” Corner said.

| Destination Management Issues | Scoop.it

| Destination Management Issues | Scoop.it

Measuring tourism’s carbon footprint: The challenge for small destinations

Measuring tourism’s carbon footprint: The challenge for small destinations | Destination Management Issues | Scoop.it
Measuring tourism’s carbon footprint is essential for sustainable destination management. But for smaller destinations, the data needed to do so is difficult to access. This is not a technical problem; It is a structural one. The European Tourism Data Space, aiming at improving data access to tourism stakeholders could change that.

Visa Steps Into Travel — and Into Competition With Its Own Card Issuers

Visa Steps Into Travel — and Into Competition With Its Own Card Issuers | Destination Management Issues | Scoop.it

"Visa just officially launch a consumer travel site that competes with the banks that pay Visa to issue their cards. That's the real story here, the structural conflict of a payment network establishing direct relationships with cardholders and entering into the banks' own travel businesses.

Visa has launched Visa Destinations, a consumer-facing travel platform offering cardholders curated experiences, dining, and shopping across 10 cities, including Paris, London, Dubai, and New York. There’s also a link to the pre-existing Visa Luxury Hotel Collection.

Visa has numerous partners, including Smart Media Technologies, which powers the site, as well as Trip.com, the Star Alliance, and Tiqets, which Expedia agreed to acquire last December. Viator is an advertiser.

Visa also has many direct partnerships with attractions and restaurants, including the Louvre, Disneyland Paris, and Printemps Paris, a department store chain. Popular tourist attractions are particularly tough companies to partner with and these relationships are much-sought after.

Unlike most travel websites where users input their desired dates and destinations, Visa Destinations is organized around in-destination experiences and restaurants."

Examining challenges and opportunities related to unconventional data sources for sustainable tourism

Examining challenges and opportunities related to unconventional data sources for sustainable tourism | Destination Management Issues | Scoop.it
The integration of unconventional data sources, such as mobile positioning and user-generated content, into tourism research has been widely discussed, yet their broader implications for sustainable tourism remain underexplored. This study aims to address this research gap by critically examining the challenges and opportunities associated with these data sources in enhancing sustainable tourism management. Utilising document analysis and semi-structured interviews with corporate representatives in Switzerland, this research identifies nine key data sources grouped into mobility, utility consumption, and financial/business data categories. The findings reveal the potential of these data sources to provide granular insights into tourism patterns, while highlighting challenges related to data sharing, quality, and privacy. Theoretical implications suggest a paradigm shift in stakeholder relationships and the validity of unconventional data for capturing tourist behaviour. Managerial implications emphasise the need for collaborative projects, predictive analysis, and data sharing for improved tourism governance.
