5-Minute Film Festival: 8 Videos for ELL Classrooms | Cool Video's & Instructional Movies | Scoop.it

Videos can be an effective tool for teaching and learning English (or, for that matter, any academic subject) if used strategically and not as a "babysitting" device. My colleague Katie Hull Sypnieski and I wrote a previous post for Edutopia titled Eight Ways To Use Videos With English-Language Learners that shares instructional strategies for many kinds of clips. Here are a few of my favorite videos to use with those exercises.

Nancy Penfold's curator insight, March 7, 2016 11:43 PM

This post looks at the use of Periscope to connect classrooms to the world. This use of technology in learning has many great impacts that may not be seen in classrooms otherwise.

  • Students able to gain understanding about greater information in communities around the world.
  • Transparency in program allowing parents and members of the community to utilize the technology. In engaging parents and the community, we are empowering them to work with the school (Regional Educational Laboratory Pacific).
  • Transparency of learning supports the communication between school and community, helping to build trust and improve communications. These are vital aspects of school and community relationships (Nagle).
  • Cross cultural education and real world relationships with classrooms helps to support the development of active citizens, a vital outcome of CCE (Reynolds).

"My class used Final Cut Express to show we have our eyes on our goals!" --Pretty cool! Shows what creativity & active enthusiastic kiddos can do!

A project like this takes longer than you would think to produce - teachers who want to create videos featuring kids should also consider non-editing choices like Vine.

An iMovie takes me about one hour per minute to edit! So, if you're gonna do this with a class create small groups or like this video the whole class!
