Conservation agriculture systems

Mitchell, J.P., Reicosky, D.C., Kueneman, E.A., Fisher, J. & Beck, D. 2019. CAB Reviews. 14 (1): 1-25.

https://doi.org/10.1079/PAVSNNR201914001

Cornell Conservation Agriculture Group (soilhealth.org)'s insight:

This paper suggests that projected food demand is jeopardized by use of conventional systems of agriculture that result in environmental degradation. They describe ways that that existing systems need to be improved to meet future food security challenges. The contend that the principles of CA system can provide a framework for a unified approach for improvement. They provide evidence that CA when flexibly applied and in ways that mimic the natural ecosystems is a best-bet approach.

A global perspective on sustainable intensification research

Cassman, K.G. & Grassini, P. 2020. Nature Sustainability. 3 (4): 262-268. https://doi.org/10.1038/s41893-020-0507-8

Cornell Conservation Agriculture Group (soilhealth.org)'s insight:

This review agrees that food demand without further loss of natural ecosystems requires sustainable intensification but discusses what research will be needed to achieve it. The report is optimistic assuming a well-prioritized and well funded research portfolio and appropriate policies and institutions to support it.
