Brainstorm in Progress: Why MOOCs Work

Brainstorm in Progress: Why MOOCs Work | Connectivism | Scoop.it

I have been reading articles lately written by educators who have not participated in MOOCs but nonetheless seem to have some pretty strong opinions about them such as the "What's the Matter With MOOCs" by Siva Vaidhyanathan from the august (Latin for "dusty, old, and conservative") Chronicle of Higher Ed.

I'm not sure, but I do have a connectivist/rhizomatic explanation for it that turns me back to my own discipline of writing. A newly-minted theory (and Connectivism is still rather new in the history of educational theory) is like a ...

Interesting diverging points of view about MOOCs. I'm not sure what the author says in the post this scoop leads to entirely convinces me in dismissing what the author of the original article (on Chronicle.com) points out. One thing though, MOOCs are work in progress.
Thank you for sharing.
Jack Mosel's comment, July 17, 2012 12:21 AM
@ Lelapin Thank you for your taking the time to read in-depth, this post. I concur, "we ain't seen nothing yet". As i have been an active participant in 4 MOOC's now (from over the past year), I have personally seen immense growth in myself technologically, through adept use from facilitating technology into educational practice. I believe the essential take away from this is the "Puppet master", which is the new "Instructor" model... To facilitate a worthwhile and effective MOOC. I invite you to 'Join us' See my posts on Scoopit, from the experiences had from P2PU & MOOC.

Also, I commend your great Curation Blog here "Things I pick up"!.. Following the really insightful golden nuggets!

I’m lucky that my first experience of participating in a mooc was the fabulous University of Mary Washington UMW ds106 Digital Storytelling course.  I spent most of my non-work time last summer and autumn immersed in creative projects that really stretched my existing skills.

See the ironic thing is that after having taken multiple classes on learning theories, my grasp and understanding for them is minimal at best.  The congitivist frame of thought would explain this phenomena to the fact that I have failed to find learning theories relevant.

Stories to TEL: On two kinds of MOOCs

Stories to TEL: On two kinds of MOOCs | Connectivism | Scoop.it

There are two kinds of massive, open online courses around (MOOCs), the Downes-Siemens kind and the kind that mostly (uniquely still?) universities in the USA offer. The archetypal example of the former is PLENK10, a course on personal learning environments networks and knowledge, which ran in September 2010.
