Melanesia's oceans are worth at least US$5.4 billion, but are under increasing threat.
Dulce Lopez's insight:
This is an excellent example on how dependent people and cultures across the world depend on marine/ocean resources and how they are threatened by various environmental issues such as climate change. With the Melanesia's oceans being worth $5.4 billion Melanesia's leaders are currently looking at two different paths for management options including putting a greater pressure on ocean assets and continuing on a path of inadequate policy and management while the second one would be to shift towards sustainable management and a blue economy. However, the positive switch is easier then done if Melanesia does not have to adeqaute resources to make this switch.
