En Algérie, la distribution alimentaire a longtemps reposé sur des structures traditionnelles profondément ancrées dans les pratiques sociales, telles que les petits commerces, les marchés populaires et les circuits informels. Toutefois, face aux dynamiques contemporaines d’urbanisation, de mondialisation et de transformation des modes de vie, un processus de modernisation s’amorce. Ce processus, bien que lent et fragmentaire, pose les jalons d’une transition vers une grande distribution structurée, tout en soulevant des enjeux socioéconomiques et sanitaires majeurs.

Planting wildflowers around the outside of cropland has almost become standard good practice among farmers trying to reduce their pesticide use. The theory: wildflowers attract beneficial insects, like ladybugs and some wasps, which prey on aphids and other pests. With more beneficial insects, pesticide use can go down. Sounds good, right? After COVID-19, many of us became more aware of how zoonotic diseases- those that jump from animals to humans- can upend the world. But the link between human health and forest health runs deeper than most of us realize.

J’ai découvert l’aquaponie lors d’une visite à une ferme urbaine. Amina, une ingénieure agronome passionnée, m’y a fait comprendre le fonctionnement de cette technique révolutionnaire, qui allie l’élevage de poissons à la culture de plantes, dans un système circulaire où chacun nourrit l’autre. Amina m’a notamment expliqué comment les déjections des poissons, riches en nutriments, sont utilisées pour fertiliser les plantes. En retour, ces plantes filtrent et purifient l’eau, qui est ensuite renvoyée dans les bassins de poissons. Ce système fermé crée un cycle harmonieux et écologique de production alimentaire, et peut transformer nos villes en des espaces plus verts et autosuffisants.

D’ici 2050, de nouvelles formes d’agriculture sans pesticides chimiques sont possibles à l’échelle européenne. À quoi pourraient-elles ressembler et quelles seraient les conséquences d’une telle transformation ? Cette prospective, réalisée par un collectif d’experts européens, propose des stratégies de rupture pour une protection des cultures sans pesticides chimiques fondées sur l’immunité des plantes, l’holobionte de la plante cultivée et les régulations biologiques à l’échelle du paysage. Elle explore également trois scénarios et trajectoires de transition du système alimentaire, déclinés dans quatre secteurs de production et régions (Italie, Roumanie, Finlande et France). Les auteurs évaluent les impacts de ces scénarios sur la production, le commerce, le changement d’usage des terres et les émissions de gaz à effet de serre, pour l’Europe et à l’échelle globale.
