🌾 Agrobiodiversity — the genetic diversity of crops, animals and microorganisms — is declining. This loss threatens more than our environment: it weakens food systems, endangers nutrition, impacts health, and puts livelihoods at risk. Safeguarding agrobiodiversity is key to building resilient, inclusive and sustainable societies — for people and the planet. Through initiatives like Biosphere Reserves, Intangible Cultural Heritage and Creative Cities of Gastronomy, UNESCO supports sustainable food systems that protect biodiversity and promote local knowledge and innovation. Because biodiversity starts on our plate — and protecting it means protecting our future.

Planting wildflowers around the outside of cropland has almost become standard good practice among farmers trying to reduce their pesticide use. The theory: wildflowers attract beneficial insects, like ladybugs and some wasps, which prey on aphids and other pests. With more beneficial insects, pesticide use can go down. Sounds good, right? But what if we have one of the basic principals of this technique all wrong? A trial from the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology tested a new planting strategy that, actually, seems pretty obvious.
