Sunflower oil sales have over­taken olive oil sales in Spain for the first time.
According to data from the National Association of Edible Oil Bottlers and Refiners Industrialists (Anierac), olive oil sales dropped from 134,000 tons in October 2023 to 110,477 tons in March 2024, a 17.5 per­cent decrease.
Conversely, sun­flower oil sales increased by 24.5 per­cent over the same period, ris­ing from 127,400 tons to 158,574 tons.

The price of Tunisian olive oil exports has increased sub­stan­tially on inter­na­tional mar­kets in recent months.
From November 2020 to March 2021, export prices increased by 30-per­cent com­pared with the pre­vi­ous crop year.
According to the fig­ures released by the National Olive Oil Office (ONH), Tunisia exported 109,000 tons of olive oil in that period, down from the 144,000 tons recorded in the same period of the pre­vi­ous year.

Olive oil pro­duc­tion in Puglia has grown by 21 per­cent over the past decade despite a seem­ingly end­less bar­rage of chal­lenges.
Still, farm­ers in the south­west­ern Italian region, which accounts for more than half of Italy’s over­all pro­duc­tion, believe they would have fared much bet­ter if local and national author­i­ties had imple­mented a wide and thought­ful strate­gic vision for the devel­op­ment of the sec­tor.

As the olive har­vest gets under­way in Portugal, farm­ers and offi­cials antic­i­pate a slight pro­duc­tion rebound com­pared to last year but not a repeat of the record-high yield of the 2021/22 crop year.
Separate esti­mates from the European Union and Federation of the E.U. Olive Oil Industry (Fedolive) antic­i­pate the har­vest could reach 150,000 tons in 2023/24, about 20 per­cent higher than last year and nearly 12 per­cent above the five-year aver­age.

While the researchers did not take car­bon seques­tra­tion into account, pre­vi­ous stud­ies have found that all three cat­e­gories of olive groves – tra­di­tional, high-den­sity and super-high-den­sity – act as car­bon sinks.
