BEIRUT, Jan. 5 (Xinhua) -- Hassan Chit, a 50-year-old Lebanese farmer, wailed to express his pain over the loss of his 20,000 square meters of persimmon and avocado orchards in Sarda plain in southern Lebanon due to the confrontations on the Lebanese-Israeli borders.

The Near East and North Africa (NENA) region faces a growing number of complex, overlapping and compounding hazards that are undermining livelihoods, deepening food insecurity and slowing economic development. Increasingly frequent and severe climate extremes – such as droughts, flash floods, heatwaves – are converging with transboundary plant and animal diseases, protracted conflicts and economic volatility. Hala Abdallah discusses with Alternative Frequencies host Christelle Barakat the realities of the Lebanese agricultural sector in light of the overlapping crises and offers recommendations for improvement. Hala Abdallah currently serves as the Director of Studies and Coordination at the Ministry of Agriculture in Lebanon.
