Muscle Spasms on the Back

Muscle Spasms on the Back | Chiropractic + Wellness | Scoop.it

Back pain is one of the most common debilitating symptoms affecting a majority of individuals. A greater number of people though will often overlook the possible source of their pain and continue throughout their regular lifestyles, postponing medical attention when their symptoms lessen. But, what happens when one day, you bend over to pick up a small object and you can’t stand up? Back pain or spasms are usually a sign of spine complications that, if left untreated, can ultimately alter your lifestyle.

Back spams are a sudden and involuntary contraction, or tightening of a muscle in the back as a result of strain, overuse, weakness, or muscle pain relating to an injury or condition. While the most appropriate action would be to seek immediate medical attention, back spams can be temporarily relieved using ice therapy. Also, after experiencing a back spasm, make sure to keep moving. With back pain or other symptoms, an individual’s natural response is to lay down and avoid movement but, in fact, resting and immobilizing the body after a back spasm will only cause the surrounding muscles to spasm and tighten further. Then, it’s time to seek medical attention. A chiropractor can diagnose the underlying cause of your back pain and follow with an appropriate treatment procedure depending on the individual’s level of injury or grade of condition. While the back spasm that brought you to seek medical attention came on suddenly, the problem that caused your symptoms generally developed gradually over time. Receiving chiropractic treatment for any spine complications is crucial in order to avoid a back issue that could drastically affect your quality of life.

Dr. Alex Jimenez DC, APRN, FNP, IFMCP, CFMP's insight:

Back spasms can cause debilitating pain and other symptoms that can impair an individual's lifestyle. When experiencing these type of symptoms, its crucial to seek medical attention to treat any possible injury or underlying condition that could be causing the back complications. Chiropractic Care for Myofascial Pain Syndrome: Natural Relief, Root Causes, and Your Path to Wellness

Hey there, pain warriors! Ever feel like your muscles are throwing a secret party—knotty, achy, and refusing to let you join the fun? That’s myofascial pain syndrome (MPS) gatecrashing your day, turning simple moves into a comedy of errors. But fear not; chiropractic care is like the wise party pooper who gently clears the room with hands-on magic, easing those trigger points without the drama of drugs or surgery. In this epic guide (over 5,000 words of straightforward, science-backed goodness), we’ll unpack what MPS is, its sneaky causes and symptoms, how it messes with your musculoskeletal system, and why environmental factors like stress or pollution can turn up the volume on your pain. We’ll spotlight how chiropractic care, teamed with nonsurgical treatments, slashes inflammation, releases those muscle knots, and gives you a head start on a vibrant wellness journey. Plus, we’ll weave in clinical insights from Dr. Alexander Jimenez, DC, APRN, FNP-BC, a top El Paso expert who’s all about linking your injuries to cutting-edge diagnostics for real, lasting relief. Think of this as your playbook to evicting MPS—no eviction notice required, just smart, natural strategies!

We’ll keep it easy-breezy, like chatting over smoothies (or ice packs). If MPS has you feeling tied in knots, chiropractic care might just untangle things. Let’s roll!

What Is Myofascial Pain Syndrome? The Basics

Let’s kick off with the fundamentals. Myofascial pain syndrome, or MPS, is like a stubborn cramp that sets up camp in your muscles and the fascia—the tough, spiderweb-like connective tissue that wraps around them like cling wrap (Mayo Clinic, 2024a). It’s a chronic pain condition where hypersensitive spots called trigger points form in tight muscle bands, causing local aches or even zapping pain to far-off body parts, known as referred pain (Cleveland Clinic, 2023a). Unlike a one-off muscle pull from a weekend hike, MPS lingers, making everyday tasks like stretching for a high shelf or walking the dog feel like an uphill battle.

At its heart, MPS is a musculoskeletal disorder, zeroing in on those knotty trigger points rather than widespread tenderness like in fibromyalgia (Shah et al., 2015). It’s super common—up to 85% of people might tangle with it sometime—and it plays no favorites; desk jockeys, athletes, and couch potatoes alike can get snagged (Gerwin, 2010). The silver lining? It’s highly treatable, especially with chiropractic techniques that target those trigger points head-on, no meds or incisions needed.

Humor alert: MPS is like your muscles deciding to host a flash mob—knots dancing everywhere—but chiropractic care is the DJ who changes the tune to “relax”!

Causes of Myofascial Pain Syndrome: The Hidden Triggers

MPS doesn’t just pop up—it’s often sparked by a mix of physical, emotional, and environmental factors that overload your muscles and fascia (StatPearls, 2023a). Physical trauma is a prime suspect: a slip on icy stairs, a fender-bender whiplash, or repetitive strain from assembly line work or marathon typing sessions can create tiny muscle tears, forming those pesky trigger points (Jimenez, 2016). Overuse is another culprit—think a painter’s shoulder from constant overhead reaches or a runner’s calves from pounding pavement without rest (Healthline, 2024).

Poor posture sneaks in too: slouching at your desk or hunching over your phone tightens neck and shoulder muscles, setting the stage for knots (WebMD, 2024). Emotional stress amps it up—clenching your jaw during a tense meeting or tensing up in traffic can make muscles rigid, inviting trigger points (Medical News Today, 2022). Now, environmental factors? They’re the silent accomplices: cold, damp weather can stiffen muscles (like shoveling snow in winter chills), while vitamin deficiencies from poor indoor lighting (low vitamin D) weaken tissues (StatPearls, 2023b). Air pollution or toxins irritate the system, ramping up inflammation, and even ergonomic nightmares like a bad office chair contribute by promoting poor alignment (PMC, 2024).

Dr. Alexander Jimenez highlights that in his practice, MPS often stems from these everyday stressors, like prolonged sitting leading to postural imbalances that strain the upper back (Jimenez, 2016). Systemic factors like sleep deprivation, chronic infections, or hormonal imbalances (e.g., thyroid issues) can also play a role, making MPS a perfect storm of modern life (AAPM&R, 2024).

Humor: Causes of MPS? It’s like your muscles collecting bad habits like stamps—posture slumps, stress stamps, and cold weather postmarks—time to cancel that subscription!

Stop suffering from discomfort; learn how a chair for back pain can transform your sitting experience and alleviate pain.

Introduction

Back pain is one of the most common health issues people face today. Whether you’re working at a desk all day, relaxing at home, or dealing with daily stresses, discomfort in your lower back can make simple tasks feel overwhelming. According to health experts, approximately 70% of the workforce spends most of their day sitting, which can lead to increased stress on the spine and contribute to chronic pain over time (Jimenez, 2023a). But there’s good news: simple changes like using an ergonomic chair and seeking chiropractic care can make a big difference. In this article, we’ll explore the causes of back pain, how poor seating habits play a role, the benefits of ergonomic chairs, the risks of sitting too long, and how combining these with nonsurgical treatments like chiropractic adjustments can help you feel better without surgery or heavy medications.

We’ll draw on reliable sources, including studies from medical journals and insights from Dr. Alexander Jimenez, a chiropractor and family nurse practitioner based in El Paso, Texas. Dr. Jimenez emphasizes natural healing methods that support the body’s own recovery process without surgery. By the end, you’ll have practical tips to improve your posture, reduce pain, and prevent future issues. Let’s dive in and learn how to protect your spine for a healthier, pain-free life.

Understanding the Basics of Back Pain

Back pain affects millions of people worldwide. It can range from a mild ache to sharp, debilitating discomfort that interferes with work, sleep, and daily life. The lower back, or lumbar region, is especially vulnerable because it supports much of your body’s weight and allows for movement in many directions. Doctors often classify back pain as either specific or non-specific. Specific back pain has a clear cause, like a fracture or infection, while non-specific back pain, which makes up about 90% of cases, doesn’t have an obvious source and is often linked to muscle strain, poor posture, or lifestyle factors (Chenot et al., 2017).

What Causes Back Pain?

Several factors can lead to back pain. Some are related to lifestyle, while others stem from injuries or underlying conditions. Common contributors include:

  • Poor Posture: Slouching or leaning forward strains the muscles and ligaments in your back. Over time, this can weaken the spine’s natural support system, leading to discomfort and potential long-term damage.
  • Sedentary Lifestyle: Sitting for long periods without breaks reduces blood flow to the spine and puts pressure on discs, the cushion-like structures between vertebrae. Research has linked prolonged sitting to higher rates of low back pain, particularly among office workers (Bontrup et al., 2019).
  • Muscle Imbalances: Weak core muscles or tight hamstrings can pull your spine out of alignment, causing strain and pain.
  • Injuries: From lifting heavy objects incorrectly to sports mishaps, sudden strains or sprains can trigger acute back pain.
  • Age and Wear: As we age, discs in the spine can degenerate, leading to conditions like herniated discs or osteoarthritis, which contribute to chronic pain.
  • Stress and Tension: Emotional stress can cause muscles to tighten, exacerbating back discomfort. Psychological factors play a role in chronic back issues, amplifying physical symptoms.
  • Work-Related Factors: Jobs involving heavy lifting, vibrations, or awkward positions increase risk. Shift work, common in many industries, has been shown to raise the odds of low back pain by 31%, particularly among night shift workers (Chen et al., 2023).

Research indicates that mechanical issues, including problems with the spine or surrounding tissues, are the primary cause of low back pain in most cases (Will et al., 2018). This is often referred to as “mechanical low back pain,” where the pain originates from everyday wear and tear rather than a serious disease. Another study points out that instability in the lumbar spine—when ligaments weaken—can lead to ongoing pain by allowing excessive movement of vertebrae (Hauser et al., 2022). Ligaments are strong bands that hold bones together, and if they’re damaged, the spine may not stay aligned properly, causing discomfort.

Delve into the intersection of ethics, jurisprudence and nursing, focusing on essential principles for daily practice.

Introduction

Musculoskeletal pain is a widespread issue affecting millions of people, from desk workers battling backaches to athletes nursing injuries. Whether it’s a nagging lower back pain from sitting for too long or a stiff neck from a fender bender, this discomfort can throw a wrench into daily life. Fortunately, combining chiropractic care with nursing offers a powerful, non-surgical approach to managing and reducing musculoskeletal pain. In this 5,000+ word blog post, we’ll dive into why this dynamic duo works so well, explore environmental factors contributing to musculoskeletal pain, and highlight how small lifestyle changes can make a big difference. We’ll also spotlight the expertise of Dr. Alexander Jimenez, DC, APRN, FNP-BC, a distinguished practitioner in El Paso, Texas, who bridges chiropractic care, nursing, and personal injury cases with a unique clinical perspective. Plus, we’ll sprinkle in a bit of humor to keep things light—because who said learning about health can’t be fun? Let’s get started!

Understanding Musculoskeletal Pain and Its Causes

What Is Musculoskeletal Pain?

Musculoskeletal pain affects the bones, muscles, ligaments, tendons, and nerves. It can be acute (short-term) or chronic (long-lasting), localized or widespread. Common examples include lower back pain, neck pain, shoulder stiffness, and joint discomfort. According to the World Health Organization, musculoskeletal conditions are a leading cause of disability worldwide, impacting people of all ages and lifestyles.

Think of your musculoskeletal system as the scaffolding of a building—when one part gets wobbly, the whole structure feels it. A misaligned spine, tight muscles, or inflamed joints can send pain signals that make even simple tasks feel like climbing Mount Everest. But what causes this pain in the first place?

Environmental Factors Contributing to Musculoskeletal Pain

Musculoskeletal pain doesn’t just appear out of nowhere—it’s often the result of environmental factors that sneak up on us like a ninja in the night. Here are some key culprits:

  1. Poor Posture: Slouching at a desk or hunching over a phone for hours (we’re all guilty of this!) can strain muscles and joints. Prolonged poor posture misaligns the spine, leading to pain in the neck, shoulders, and back.
  2. Sedentary Lifestyle: Sitting for long periods—like binge-watching your favorite show—reduces muscle flexibility and weakens core strength. Studies show that sedentary behavior is linked to increased musculoskeletal pain (Ojala et al., 2016).
  3. Repetitive Motions: Jobs or hobbies that involve repetitive tasks, such as typing or lifting, can overwork specific muscle groups, leading to strain or injury. Think of it as your body saying, “Enough with the same old dance moves!”
  4. Workplace Ergonomics: Uncomfortable chairs, poorly positioned monitors, or improper lifting techniques at work can wreak havoc on your body. Poor ergonomics is a major driver of workplace-related musculoskeletal disorders.
  5. Stress: Yes, stress can literally be a pain in the neck! Chronic stress can cause muscles, particularly those in the shoulders and upper back, to tighten, contributing to pain and discomfort.
  6. Injuries: Accidents, such as car crashes or falls, can cause acute musculoskeletal injuries that linger if not properly treated. In El Paso, personal injury cases like these are common, and proper care is crucial for recovery.

These factors often overlap, creating a perfect storm of pain. For instance, a stressful desk job with poor ergonomics and minimal movement is like a recipe for a backache casserole. Understanding these triggers is the first step to managing pain effectively.

The Synergy of Chiropractic Care and Nursing

Why Chiropractic Care?

Chiropractic care focuses on diagnosing and treating musculoskeletal disorders, particularly those involving the spine. Chiropractors use hands-on spinal adjustments, manipulations, and other non-invasive techniques to restore spinal alignment, enhance mobility, and alleviate pain. The goal? Get your body back in tune, like a guitar that’s been strummed a bit too hard.

Chiropractic care is grounded in the idea that a properly aligned spine supports the nervous system, which controls every function in your body. Misalignments (called subluxations) can disrupt nerve signals, leading to pain, inflammation, and reduced function. By correcting these misalignments, chiropractors help alleviate pain and promote overall health.

The Role of Nursing in Musculoskeletal Care

Nurses, particularly those with advanced training, such as Family Nurse Practitioners (FNPs), bring a holistic perspective to patient care. They assess, diagnose, and manage health conditions, often coordinating care across disciplines. In the context of musculoskeletal pain, nurses provide patient education, pain management strategies, and lifestyle counseling to support patients. They’re like the coaches who keep you motivated and on track during your recovery journey.

Chiropractic Care Uncovered for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Relief | Call: 915-850-0900 | Chiropractic + Wellness | Scoop.it

Unlock the advantages of chiropractic care for effective pain relief and improved hand function from carpal tunnel syndrome.

Introduction

Imagine this: you are typing away on your laptop, sipping your morning coffee, when suddenly your fingers start to tingle like they are doing a little dance of their own. Alternatively, you may be trying to grip a steering wheel, but your hand feels like a tiny lightning bolt has zapped it. If this sounds familiar, you might be dealing with carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), a pesky condition that can make your hands and wrists feel like they are staging a rebellion. Nevertheless, do not worry—help is at hand (pun intended)! Chiropractic care, particularly with experts like Dr. Alexander Jimenez, DC, APRN, FNP-BC in El Paso, Texas, offers a non-invasive, effective way to tackle CTS and its related symptoms, such as numbness and tingling. This blog post dives deep into the clinical rationale behind why chiropractic care works for CTS, explores its risk factors, and highlights how small lifestyle changes and advanced diagnostic techniques can make a big difference. Plus, we will sprinkle in a small quantity of humor to keep things light—because who said health cannot be fun?

What is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a nerve condition that occurs when the median nerve, which runs from your forearm into your hand through a narrow passageway called the carpal tunnel, gets compressed. This tunnel, located in your wrist, is like a crowded highway for nerves, tendons, and blood vessels. When it gets too congested—due to swelling, inflammation, or other factors—the median nerve can get squeezed, leading to symptoms like:

  • Numbness and tingling sensations in the thumb, index, middle, and part of the ring finger.
  • Pain that can radiate from the wrist up the arm or down into the hand.
  • Weakness in the hand, making it hard to grip objects (like that coffee mug you almost dropped).
  • A sensation of “pins and needles” or even an electric shock-like feeling.

Think of the median nerve as the lead singer of a band, delivering all the important signals for movement and sensation in your hand. When it is squished, the performance goes off-key, and you are left with a symphony of discomfort. CTS affects about 3-6% of adults in the U.S., with women being more likely to develop it due to smaller wrist anatomy or hormonal factors (Palmercare Chiropractic, 2021)

Risk Factors for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

CTS does not just show up out of nowhere—it has got a whole crew of risk factors that can push it onto the stage. Here are the main culprits, along with some clinical insights into why they matter:

1. Repetitive Hand and Wrist Movements

If your job or hobby involves repetitive motions—like typing, assembly line work, or even knitting like your grandma on a mission—you are at higher risk. These movements can irritate the tendons in the wrist, causing swelling that crowds the median nerve (OrthoInfo – AAOS).

2. Anatomical Factors

Some people are born with a smaller carpal tunnel, which is like trying to fit a whole orchestra into a broom closet. A wrist fracture or dislocation can also reduce the space in the tunnel, putting extra pressure on the nerve (OrthoInfo – AAOS).

3. Medical Conditions

Certain health conditions can make CTS more likely:

  • Diabetes: Increases the risk of nerve damage, including to the median nerve (OrthoInfo – AAOS).
  • Rheumatoid arthritis: Causes inflammation that can compress the nerve (Vitality Precision Chiropractic, 2018).
  • Hypothyroidism: Can lead to fluid retention, increasing pressure in the carpal tunnel (Vitality Precision Chiropractic, 2018).
  • Obesity: Excess weight can add pressure on the wrist structures (NuSpine Chiropractic, 2025).

4. Hormonal and Metabolic Changes

Pregnancy and menopause can cause fluid retention, which swells the carpal tunnel and irritates the median nerve. The good news? CTS related to pregnancy often improves after delivery (OrthoInfo – AAOS).

5. Workplace Factors

Jobs that involve vibrating tools (think construction workers) or prolonged wrist flexion (like cashiers) can aggravate the median nerve. Cold environments can also worsen symptoms if nerve damage is already present (ChiroHealthKC, 2020).

What Is Piriformis Syndrome? The Muscle That’s a Real Pain

Let us start with the star of the show: the piriformis muscle. Tucked away in your gluteal region (fancy talk for your backside), this small, pear-shaped muscle runs from your sacrum (the triangular bone at the base of your spine) to the top of your femur (thigh bone). Its job? To help rotate your hip outward, like when you pivot to dodge a rogue shopping cart at the grocery store. However, when the piriformis gets irritated, it can become inflamed, leading to piriformis syndrome.

Piriformis syndrome happens when this muscle spasms or tightens, often pinching the sciatic nerve—a big nerve that runs from your lower back down to your feet. This can cause pain, numbness, or tingling in your buttock, thigh, or even calf. Think of it like the piriformis muscle is giving the sciatic nerve an unwanted bear hug. According to research, piriformis syndrome accounts for about 5-6% of sciatica cases, and it is more common in women and middle-aged folks (Cass, 2015).

Symptoms: What Does It Feel Like?

If you have piriformis syndrome, you might experience:

  • Deep buttock pain: A nagging ache that makes sitting through a movie feel like torture.
  • Radiating pain: Pain that shoots down the back of your thigh, sometimes to your calf or foot.
  • Numbness or tingling: That “pins and needles” sensation, like your leg fell asleep but will not wake up.
  • Tenderness: Pressing on the piriformis muscle feels like poking a bruise.
  • Worsening with activity: Sitting, squatting, or climbing stairs can crank up the pain.

Sound familiar? You might be thinking, “Wait, that sounds like sciatica!” Furthermore, you are not wrong—these two conditions are like twins who love to confuse everyone. Nevertheless, do not worry, we will untangle them later.

Causes: Why Does This Happen?

The piriformis muscle can get cranky for a few reasons:

  1. Overuse or Trauma: Repeated squatting, lunging, or a direct hit (like slipping on that taco truck line) can irritate the muscle, making it tighten or spasm (Jimenez, n.d.).
  2. Nerve Entrapment: The sciatic nerve’s close relationship with the piriformis means a tight muscle can pinch it, causing pain (Jankovic et al., 2013).
  3. Sacroiliac Joint Dysfunction: Problems with the joint connecting your spine to your pelvis can make the piriformis overwork, leading to spasms (Chang et al., 2024).
  4. Anatomical Variations: In some people, the sciatic nerve runs through the piriformis muscle, making it more likely to get pinched (Son & Lee, 2022).

It is like the piriformis is a diva who gets upset when her stage (your body) is not set up just right. Nevertheless, here is where chiropractic care, especially from someone like Dr. Jimenez, comes in to save the day.

Sciatica vs. Piriformis Syndrome: Twins, But Not Identical

If piriformis syndrome and sciatica were siblings, they would be the kind who borrow each other’s clothes but still argue over who is cooler. Both can cause pain, numbness, and tingling from your buttocks down your legs, but they are not the same. Let us break it down so you can tell them apart at the family reunion.

Similarities: Why They Get Confused

Both conditions mess with the sciatic nerve, which is like the body’s superhighway for sensory and motor signals to your legs. When this nerve gets irritated, you get similar symptoms:

  • Radiating pain: From the lower back or buttock down to the thigh, calf, or foot.
  • Numbness and tingling: That annoying “my leg is asleep” feeling.
  • Worsening with sitting: Long car rides or Netflix marathons can make the pain worse.
  • Muscle involvement: Tight or spasming muscles are often culprits.

Because of these overlaps, many people (and even some doctors) might mistake piriformis syndrome for sciatica, especially since piriformis syndrome is a less common cause of sciatic nerve irritation, accounting for only 5-6% of cases (Cass, 2015).

Exploring Chiropractic Care Solutions For ACL Tears | Call: 915-850-0900 | Chiropractic + Wellness | Scoop.it

Discover how chiropractic care can help improve stability and reduce discomfort following an injury, such as an ACL tear.

Introduction

Picture this: you’re sprinting down the field, ready to make the game-winning move, when suddenly—pop!—your knee gives out, and you’re left hobbling like a pirate with a peg leg. Welcome to the not-so-exclusive club of Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) tear victims. These injuries are the uninvited guests of the musculoskeletal world, crashing the party of your active lifestyle and leaving chaos in their wake. Whether you’re an athlete or just someone who tripped over life’s metaphorical banana peel, an ACL tear can turn your daily routine into a painful obstacle course.

But fear not—there’s a silver lining, and it’s not just ice packs and crutches. Chiropractic care is emerging as a powerful ally in the battle against ACL injuries, offering a non-invasive approach to manage pain, accelerate recovery, and help you get back on your feet. In this comprehensive guide, we’ll explore why chiropractic care can be a game-changer for ACL injuries, how these tears disrupt daily life, and the pivotal role of Dr. Alexander Jimenez, a distinguished chiropractor and nurse practitioner in El Paso, Texas. With his unique blend of chiropractic expertise and medical diagnostics, Dr. Jimenez is a beacon of hope for those navigating the choppy waters of personal injury cases. So, grab a seat (preferably one that doesn’t wobble like your knee), and let’s dive into the world of ACL tears and chiropractic care.

Understanding ACL Tears

Anatomy of the Knee and the ACL

The knee is a marvel of human engineering, a complex joint where bones, ligaments, tendons, and cartilage work in harmony to enable smooth and efficient movement. At the heart of this system is the Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL), one of four major ligaments that stabilize the knee. The ACL connects the femur (thigh bone) to the tibia (shin bone), preventing the tibia from sliding too far forward and maintaining the knee’s stability during dynamic movements, such as jumping or pivoting. Think of it as the knee’s trusty seatbelt—essential but not indestructible (Jimenez, 2023).

The knee also comprises other key components, including the patella (kneecap), fibula, and two crescent-shaped cartilage pieces called menisci, which provide cushioning for the joint. Tendons link muscles to bones, and the other ligaments—medial collateral, lateral collateral, and posterior cruciate—work alongside the ACL to maintain stability. When the ACL tears, this delicate balance is thrown off, leading to pain and instability.

Causes of ACL Tears

ACL tears often strike during moments of high drama—think of a soccer player dodging a defender or a skier hitting a mogul at the wrong angle. Common causes include:

  • Sudden Stops or Direction Changes: Common in sports like soccer, basketball, and football, where rapid pivoting is routine.
  • Awkward Landings: Jumping in volleyball or basketball can lead to a bad landing that stresses the ACL.
  • Direct Impact: A tackle in rugby or a car accident can deliver a direct blow to the knee.
  • Non-Athletic Mishaps: Slipping on ice or tripping during a casual walk can also be a factor.

Interestingly, female athletes face a higher risk of ACL tears, possibly due to differences in muscle strength, pelvic alignment, or hormonal influences (American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons [AAOS], 2023). It’s like the universe decided women needed an extra challenge in the sports arena—thanks, biology.

Symptoms and Diagnosis

When an ACL tears, it’s not subtle. You might hear a loud “Pop!”—like a balloon bursting at a party, but with far less confetti and far more pain. Symptoms include:

  • Immediate Swelling: Your knee might balloon up within hours, looking like it’s smuggling a grapefruit.
  • Pain: Sharp and intense, making even small movements agonizing.
  • Instability: The knee feels wobbly, as if it might betray you at any moment.

Diagnosis typically involves a physical exam, where a doctor tests the knee’s stability, and imaging like an MRI to confirm the tear’s extent. In some cases, X-rays rule out fractures. If you hear that dreaded “pop” and your knee feels like it’s auditioning for a role in a horror movie, it’s time to see a specialist (Jimenez, 2023).

Impact on Daily Life

An ACL tear is like a bad houseguest—it overstays its welcome and messes up everything. For athletes, it can mean the end of a season or even a career if not properly managed. Simple tasks like walking to the mailbox, climbing stairs, or standing for long periods become daunting. Imagine trying to chase your dog or carry groceries when your knee feels like it’s made of jelly. For non-athletes, the injury can disrupt work, hobbies, and even basic mobility, turning daily life into a frustrating game of “avoid the pain.”

The recovery process is no easy task either. Surgery is often recommended for active individuals, followed by months of physical therapy. Without proper care, an untreated ACL tear can lead to chronic instability or osteoarthritis, where the bones start grinding like an old coffee maker (Tri State Clinic North Chiropractic, 2018). But here’s where chiropractic care steps in, offering a glimmer of hope in this knee-deep nightmare.

Clinical Rationale for Chiropractic Care in ACL Injuries

Why Chiropractic Care?

Chiropractic care is like the unsung hero of the healthcare world, focusing on the body’s musculoskeletal system to promote natural healing. Unlike popping a painkiller or going under the knife, chiropractic care uses non-invasive techniques like spinal adjustments, soft tissue therapy, and rehabilitative exercises to address pain and dysfunction. For ACL injuries, this approach can be a game-changer, offering benefits like:

  • Pain Relief: Adjustments can reduce pressure on nerves and joints, easing discomfort.
  • Improved Mobility: Techniques such as joint mobilization help restore range of motion.
  • Enhanced Healing: By improving blood flow and reducing scar tissue, chiropractic care supports recovery.
  • Prevention: Correcting biomechanical issues can lower the risk of future injuries.

Evidence Supporting Chiropractic Care

Research suggests that chiropractic care can play a significant role in managing ACL injuries, particularly after surgery. A case report in the Journal of Chiropractic Medicine described a 25-year-old man who, after undergoing ACL reconstructive surgery, participated in a 12-week chiropractic program. The multimodal approach—combining adjustments, exercises, and soft tissue therapy—restored his functional ability and eliminated pain (Hoskins et al., 2011). This isn’t just a one-off; studies indicate that chiropractors using a combination of passive (like adjustments) and active (like exercises) techniques are well-suited to manage athletic injuries (Hoskins et al., 2011).

Chiropractic care also addresses related issues, like muscle imbalances or poor biomechanics, which can contribute to ACL injuries. For example, weak hamstrings or improper landing techniques increase risk, and chiropractors can design programs to strengthen these areas (MSK Centre, 2023). It’s like fixing the foundation of a house before it collapses—proactive and practical.

Chiropractic Care for Joint and Muscle Pain: A Comprehensive Guide

Imagine your body as a well-oiled machine, but sometimes the gears—your joints and muscles—get a bit rusty. That rust? It’s often inflammation that causes pain and stiffness. Chiropractic care is like the mechanic who fine-tunes those gears, helping you move smoothly again. In this comprehensive guide, we’ll explore why chiropractic care is a powerful tool for managing joint and muscle pain associated with inflammation. We’ll delve into the science, highlight the expertise of Dr. Alexander Jimenez in El Paso, and connect the dots to broader health benefits, such as gut health and brain function. So, grab a comfy seat (maybe not too comfortable, we’re talking posture here!), and let’s get started.

Section 1: The Clinical Rationale for Chiropractic Care

How Chiropractic Care Works

Chiropractic care is founded on the principle that proper alignment of the musculoskeletal system, particularly the spine, is crucial to overall health. When joints are misaligned, they can cause pain, inflammation, and limited movement. Chiropractors use hands-on adjustments to restore alignment, aiming to reduce these issues. Think of it like straightening a crooked picture frame—once it’s back in place, everything looks and feels better.

Evidence Supporting Chiropractic Care

Research supports the effectiveness of chiropractic care for musculoskeletal disorders. A study in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics found that chiropractic care significantly reduced pain and improved function in patients with chronic low back pain (Bronfort et al., 2010). Another study in Mayo Clinic Proceedings showed that the Spinal Proprioceptive Extension Exercise Dynamic (SPEED) program, which aligns with chiropractic principles, reduced back pain and fall risk in women with osteoporosis-related kyphosis (Sinaki et al., 2005). These findings suggest chiropractic care can be a game-changer for pain relief.

Comparing Chiropractic to Pharmacological Treatments

Unlike medications like nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), chiropractic care avoids serious side effects. NSAIDs, while effective for pain, are linked to gastrointestinal issues, with approximately 107,000 hospitalizations and 16,500 deaths annually among arthritis patients alone (Fries, 1998). Chiropractic care, being non-invasive, sidesteps these risks, offering a safer alternative for managing pain related to inflammation.

Introduction: Why Chiropractic Matters After a Car Crash

Each year, millions of people are involved in motor vehicle accidents (MVAs) across the U.S., often resulting in more than just dents and broken glass. Even minor fender-benders can cause lingering pain, misalignments, nerve irritation, and long-term musculoskeletal complications.

Many injured drivers experience delayed symptoms. Neck stiffness, back pain, numbness, and headaches may not surface until days or even weeks later. In these cases, chiropractic and integrative medicine offer effective, drug-free strategies for identifying and correcting the root cause of the pain, restoring function, and promoting long-term wellness.

Dr. Alexander Jimenez, DC, APRN, FNP-BC, based in El Paso, Texas, brings a distinctive dual-scope approach to patient recovery. By combining chiropractic expertise with advanced imaging, functional assessments, and legal-medical integration, Dr. Jimenez helps MVA patients restore their health and strengthen their injury claims.

What Happens to the Body in a Car Accident?

Motor vehicle collisions expose the body to rapid forces and unnatural movements. Even with a seatbelt and airbag deployment, the body absorbs energy that can cause:

  • Whiplash – hyperextension/flexion of the neck

  • Spinal misalignment – small shifts in vertebrae compress nerves

  • Disc injuries – herniated or bulging discs in the neck and lower back

  • Soft tissue injuries – damage to muscles, ligaments, and fascia

  • Nerve impingement – numbness, tingling, or weakness from compressed nerves

These musculoskeletal injuries often go unnoticed without proper assessment. A chiropractor trained in post-MVA care can detect subtle misalignments and soft tissue dysfunctions using orthopedic exams, palpation, and imaging.

According to the Winchester Institute, whiplash remains one of the most common injuries after a crash and can lead to chronic neck pain if left untreated.

Chiropractic Treatments for MVA Injuries

Chiropractors use a range of therapies to reduce inflammation, correct spinal misalignments, and restore normal movement. These include:

1. Spinal Adjustments

Manual or instrument-assisted adjustments realign the vertebrae, reduce nerve compression, and restore joint mobility. This is especially helpful for back and neck pain.

2. Soft Tissue Therapy

Targeted massage, myofascial release, and stretching help reduce inflammation, break up scar tissue, and improve circulation. As noted by Quantum Chiropractic, soft tissue therapy lowers cytokine-driven inflammation.

3. Rehabilitative Exercises

Custom rehab plans may include stretching, core strengthening, posture correction, and balance training to restore functional movement.

4. Electrical Stimulation

Low-frequency currents relieve muscle spasms, reduce pain, and accelerate tissue healing. These modalities are commonly integrated into the early stages of recovery.

Clinical Insight from Dr. Alexander Jimenez

As both a Doctor of Chiropractic and Family Nurse Practitioner, Dr. Jimenez applies a dual-scope lens to injury evaluation. His approach includes:

  • Advanced Imaging: MRI, CT, and X-ray are used to identify hidden spinal and nerve damage.

  • Functional Assessment: Muscle testing, joint mobility evaluations, and posture analysis guide the development of customized care.

  • Legal-Medical Documentation: Charting that meets personal injury case requirements, including insurance claim verification and court evidence when needed.

Dr. Jimenez’s care often involves nutritional protocolsanti-inflammatory diets, and health coaching for whole-body healing. He emphasizes correcting biomechanical dysfunctions while supporting systemic recovery with lifestyle strategies.

Timeline of Recovery: What to Expect

Week Goal Treatment Focus 1–2 Control inflammation, ease acute pain Spinal adjustments, cryotherapy, soft tissue 3–4 Restore range of motion Stretching, low-impact rehab, and posture work 5–6 Improve strength & stability Core strengthening, balance exercises 7+ Long-term resilience & function Lifestyle coaching, ergonomic education

Dr. Jimenez tailors each phase based on the individual's progress and diagnostic findings.

Why Early Chiropractic Care Is Essential

According to MVA MVP, the 72-hour window following an accident is critical for two reasons:

  1. Medical documentation: Early diagnosis supports insurance or legal claims.

  2. Injury management: Delayed care increases the risk of scar tissue, joint stiffness, and chronic pain syndromes.

Even if you feel “fine,” small misalignments and muscle tension can escalate without timely care.

The Role of Integrative Medicine in Recovery

Chiropractic care forms the foundation, but integrative medicine expands healing with:

Nutrition Support

Anti-inflammatory foods, supplements, and hydration accelerate healing. Dr. Jimenez often includes omega-3 fatty acids, turmeric, and magnesium in recovery plans.

Functional Health Coaching

Helps patients improve sleep, manage stress, and optimize energy, vital for those coping with trauma and pain.

Collaboration with Other Providers

When needed, referrals may be made to orthopedists, neurologists, pain specialists, or physical therapists.

This collaborative, whole-person model boosts recovery while preventing complications.

Case Study: Whiplash, Nerve Compression, and Full Recovery

Patient: 42-year-old female struck from behind at a red light
Symptoms: Headaches, neck pain, tingling in the right arm

Findings:

  • MRI showed mild C5-C6 disc protrusion

  • Ortho tests revealed limited neck rotation and nerve irritation

Treatment:

  • Spinal adjustments twice weekly

  • Soft tissue therapy and posture correction

  • Nerve gliding exercises and an anti-inflammatory nutrition plan

Results:

  • 60% pain reduction within 4 weeks

  • Headaches resolved completely

  • Legal documentation submitted to support the injury claim

Dr. Jimenez’s team also educated the patient on seat ergonomics and stress reduction, which helped prevent recurrence.

Pseudoarthrosis: Understanding Failed Spinal Fusion | Call: 915-850-0900 or 915-412-6677 | Chiropractic + Wellness | Scoop.it

What is pseudoarthrosis of the cervical and lumbar spine?

Pseudoarthrosis of the cervical and lumbar spine

Individuals may need a spinal fusion to treat a fractured vertebra, scoliosis, or conditions like spinal stenosis, degenerative disc disease, and spondylolisthesis/slipped vertebrae. A spinal fusion reduces pain and stabilizes the spine by limiting movement between vertebrae. Pseudoarthrosis happens when the bones don’t heal after a fracture or bone surgery. When pseudoarthrosis affects the cervical or lumbar spine, it means that two vertebrae did not heal and grow together after spinal surgery to fuse them (spinal fusion). Reasons for a failed spinal fusion include:

  • Issues with the instruments used to stabilize the bone
  • Lack of bone growth
  • The number of vertebrae being fused.

The patient's health and lifestyle play a role in failed fusions, which can include

  • Diabetes
  • Inflammatory health conditions increase the risk
  • Smoking
  • Long-term steroid use

In many cases, revision surgery is needed.

Surgery-Related

During a spinal fusion, surgeons insert a bone graft between two vertebrae and then apply spinal fixation hardware (instrumented spinal fusion) that includes:

  • Plates
  • Rods
  • Screws
  1. The bone graft promotes growth between the two bones.
  2. The hardware stabilizes the vertebrae and prevents movement while they fuse and grow together.
  3. The hardware goes inside, or internal fixation.
  4. Although rare, a severe spinal fracture or deformity may need external fixation.
  5. A rigid frame secured outside the body helps to stabilize the bones.

If the fusion fails, it could be caused by one or more of the following surgical issues:

Number of Vertebrae Being Fused

Hardware

  • The surgeon must carefully plan and use the right hardware.
  • The type of hardware used during a spinal fusion may influence bone healing.
  • The instruments can come loose or break, interfering with the fusion process.
  • Spinal osteoporosis, having thin, weak bones, can affect fixation.
  • Even with the optimal surgical preparedness, weak bones significantly increase the chance of the instruments loosening and pseudoarthrosis developing.

Bone Graft

  • The type of bone graft used may affect the fusion.
  • For example, in cervical/neck spinal fusions, an autograft, which uses a small piece of bone from the patient's body, has a higher success rate. (Verla T. et al., 2021)
  • Other graft options include specialized steel cages that fit between vertebrae and contain bone growth factors.
  • The surgeon recommends the optimal bone graft for the type of surgery, the number of vertebrae involved, and risk factors.

Risk Factors

  • The patient's overall health and lifestyle impact the results of spinal fusion. Smoking increases the risk. (Berman D. et al., 2017)
  • Nicotine restricts blood circulation, decreases bone density, reduces new bone formation, and delays bone healing. (Hernigou J., & Schuind F., 2019)

The risk of pseudoarthrosis increases if the individual has any of the following: (Scoliosis Research Society, 2023)

  • Previous pseudoarthrosis
  • Obesity
  • Chronic steroid use
  • Malnutrition
  • Inflammatory diseases

Inflammatory conditions that can lead to bone loss and non-optimal bone healing include: (Torres H. M. et al., 2023)

  • Diabetes (Jiao H, Xiao E, & Graves DT, 2015)
  • Inflammatory bowel disease
  • Psoriasis
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease/COPD
  • Periodontitis
  • Systemic lupus erythematosus/SLE

Symptoms

  • The primary sign of pseudoarthrosis is pain in the same area as before the fusion surgery.
  • If the bones pinch a spinal nerve, one arm may experience pain, tingling, burning, or numbness.
  • Rarely does a pinched nerve affect both arms.
  • The pain may return shortly after the procedure.
  • The pain may develop gradually or not appear for many months.
  • However, it's more likely to appear after several months when the individual returns to their usual activities.

Diagnosis

  • The healthcare provider will learn about symptoms and perform a physical exam to evaluate the back.
  • They'll assess mobility and the type of movement that causes pain.
  • Then, they order diagnostic imaging to see the spine and identify the cause of pain.
  • Individuals may need a CT scan, MRI, and/or X-rays to evaluate the spinal structures and instrumentation fully.

Treatment

Treatment for pseudoarthrosis will likely start with:

  • Physical therapy
  • Pain management - especially in cases where it is important to rule out other sources of back or neck pain.
  • Medication
  • Injections
  • If symptoms don't improve with conservative care or if there is severe pain, the healthcare provider may recommend revision surgery.
  • Revision surgery is another procedure to treat complications or correct issues that arise after the initial pseudoarthrosis surgery.

A Clinical Approach To Reproductive Health & Sexual Changes: A Comprehensive Guide | Call: 915-850-0900 | Chiropractic + Wellness | Scoop.it

Explore the clinical approach to reproductive health and understand its importance in patient care and medical research.

Reproductive Health

When it comes to reproductive health in the body, many women will notice changes in their bodies as their menstrual periods become more or less frequent, which can affect their bodies. While menstrual changes can last between 1 and 3 years, menopause can be different for each woman with very different symptoms.

Some of the symptoms when there are hormonal changes associated with reproductive health can include:

  • Insomnia
  • Weight fluctuations
  • Fatigue
  • Joint and muscle pain

At the same time, when a woman is dealing with hormonal changes associated with their reproductive health, they are experiencing pain-like symptoms in their bodies. As the person ages, so does the body, hormones, and spinal structure. Various environmental factors affecting the body can lead to overlapping risk profiles for reproductive health and the musculoskeletal system, causing low back pain. Many individuals dealing with low back pain, especially women, are attributed to various factors like increased pain sensitivity and various menstrual cycles. (Chen et al., 2024)

Hormone Replacement Therapy

Hormone replacement Therapy or HRT is a treatment that can be used to treat some of the symptoms of hormonal changes associated with reproductive health by replacing hormones that are at a lower level. For females, low estrogen and progesterone levels can affect neuroprotective receptors in the brain, causing symptoms of inflammation and stress to impact the body. (Hwang et al., 2020) For males, low testosterone levels can cause skeletal muscle mass and strength reduction, decreased bone mineral density, and sexual dysfunction. (Barone et al., 2022) So, for males and females, taking HRT can help replenish the lost hormones in their bodies and reduce the overlapping pain symptoms.

Facts About Developmental Disorders & Learning Disabilities | Call: 915-850-0900 | Chiropractic + Wellness | Scoop.it

Learn more about developmental disorders, learning disabilities, and effective methods to assist those facing learning challenges.

Introduction To Developmental Disorders

When talking about disabilities, whether from health conditions or diseases, many healthcare professionals have to think about two languages crucial to the individual they are assessing. One is person-first language, and the other is identity language. In person-first language, it pertains to how a person places more importance on the individual and their uniqueness. This involves individuals young and old with ADHD or Down syndrome. This is compared to the identity-first language, which often highlights the disorder or disease more than the individual (e.g., autistic child). The goal that many healthcare professionals aim for when treating individuals with disabilities or developmental disorders is to use respectful terminology to reduce social stigma, prejudice, and discrimination.

Many young individuals have their cognitive and social skills evaluated when entering and progressing through school. These evaluations sometimes indicate that a young individual or children might need special assistance with either language or learning to interact with others. Evaluation and diagnosis are the first steps in providing many people with the tools and resources needed to function. However, there are also significant social implications regarding diagnosis and labeling. Many healthcare providers must consider that anyone, young or old, can be misdiagnosed. Once the person receives the diagnosis label, the individual and whoever is in the person’s life have to interpret the person’s actions through that label. For instance, if a child has been misdiagnosed as having a learning disability, it can influence the child’s self-concept. It may be due to difficulties in school that cause children to have trouble at their academic level. This self-fulfilling prophecy causes them to act this way, causing people to predict what will happen come true. Healthcare professionals must pay attention to the power of labels and apply them accurately when assessing patients.

It is also important to consider that people’s difficulties can change over time. An example would be a child who has problems in school that may improve later or grow up to be an adult where these problems are no longer relevant. That person, however, will still have a label for having a learning disability. Even though it is fairly common for children and young individuals to have abnormal behaviors, healthcare providers should recognize that the distinction between abnormal/atypical and normal/typical behavior is not always clear. When evaluating learning disabilities, misdiagnosis may be more of a concern.
When it comes to the diagnosis of developmental disabilities, it is required that a pediatrician, psychologist, psychiatrist, or other accredited professional should assess a child for a developmental disability, as there are many factors to consider. Many common behaviors in children, like temper tantrums, being overly active, being shy, etc., might be misinterpreted as a behavioral disorder like ADHD (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder). Therefore, trained professionals use multiple assessments or questionnaires completed by the parent(s) and teacher(s) in conjunction with in-person observations and case history before diagnosing.

Left Side Lower Back Pain: Symptoms and Treatment Options | Call: 915-850-0900 or 915-412-6677 | Chiropractic + Wellness | Scoop.it

Should individuals experiencing lower left back pain see a healthcare provider if it lasts more than a few weeks?

Left Side Lower Back Pain

Lower left back pain can affect one's ability to go about one's day. If it lasts longer than a week, it is considered chronic back pain, which can severely impact one's quality of life. This type of pain has various causes. Muscle or spine and nerve damage, including sciatica, can cause pain. Organs in the lower back, including the kidneys, can also cause pain. Pregnancy-related changes, fibromyalgia, and other conditions can cause lower left-side back pain in females.

Causes

Back pain is common and affects almost everyone. (National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases, 2023) Lower left back pain can have many causes, ranging from muscle and spine issues to organ infections. One way to help tell what's causing the symptoms is to determine whether there is also sciatica, sharp or burning pain that radiates down one side of the body. It happens when the sciatic nerve gets compressed or irritated. Possible causes include (Penn Medicine, 2020)

Muscle Injury

  • A muscle injury from an accident or injury can be a cause that can appear with or without sciatica.
  • If this is the cause, you’ll notice that the pain improves with rest but worsens after you’ve sat for a long time or after getting up from sleep.
  • There may also be a limited range of motion, tenderness, or swelling.

Arthritis or Bone Conditions

  • Arthritis and bone issues, like osteoporosis, can also be a cause.
  • This can happen if the arthritis is in the left hip or the root cause is on the right side, but the body compensates by overusing muscles on the left side of the back.

Unhealthy Posture and Body Positioning

  • Unhealthy postures and body positioning can contribute to back pain and musculoskeletal problems.
  • To avoid straining the muscles, try sitting and standing straight and keeping all the joints at a 90-degree angle.
  • Move around every 20-30 minutes and stretch out.

Kidneys

  • The kidneys are located in the middle back.
  • Kidney infections or kidney stones could cause pain on the left side.
  • Other symptoms include pain when urinating, fever, and nausea.

Ulcerative Colitis

  • Ulcerative colitis, inflammation of the large intestine, can also cause lower left back pain in some cases.
  • If this is the cause, there may also be abdominal pain, cramping, nausea, and fatigue.

Uterine-Related Pain

  • Several conditions related to the uterus can cause back pain symptoms, including PMS, period cramps, endometriosis, and more.
  • Sometimes, these conditions cause pain on both sides, but some individuals may experience pain just on the left side.

Pregnancy

  • The weight gain, hormonal changes, and limited movement can also contribute to lower left back pain. (Cedars Sinai, 2024)

Spinal Disease

Sciatica

Some causes can also cause sciatica.

In many cases, over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications can help with sciatica. If it persists, it is recommended to see your healthcare provider to find the root cause. The causes include: (Aguilar-Shea, A. L. et al., 2022)

Herniated disc

  • A disc that pops out of place can add pressure to the sciatic nerve.

Spinal Stenosis

  • Spinal stenosis, or spine narrowing, can also cause sciatic symptoms.

Spondylolisthesis

  • Occurs when vertebrae are out of alignment, leading to sciatic symptoms.

Pregnancy

  • Pregnancy-related growth and bodily changes oftentimes lead to sciatic nerve symptoms and sensations.

Muscle Spasms

  • Spasms like piriformis syndrome, a spasm of the muscle in the buttocks, can cause back pain.

Surgery

  • It’s normal to have back pain for up to six weeks after a back procedure.
  • However, if there is new or worsening lower left back pain after surgery, consult the healthcare provider. (Penn Medicine, 2017)

Describing Symptoms

Knowing how to describe your symptoms when seeing a healthcare provider is helpful. Answering these questions can help explain symptoms (National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases, 2023)

  1. Have you had any accidents or injuries?
  2. Did the pain come on suddenly or gradually?
  3. Are you experiencing any limits to your range of motion?
  4. Do you have any numbness or tingling?
  5. What helps with the pain?
  6. What makes the pain worse?
  7. Do you have other symptoms, like a fever or trouble urinating?

Self Care

  • Self-care includes rest, ice, heat, and over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications.
  • Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs can help with pain.
  • Sleeping on a firm mattress and maintaining a healthy posture can help manage and improve symptoms. (See Q. Y., Tan J. B., & Kumar D. S. 2021)

Prescribed Treatment

  • Your healthcare provider may recommend massage, chiropractic care, and acupuncture treatments.
  • If pain cannot be managed at home, your healthcare provider may suggest prescription medications like muscle relaxers.
  • These can allow the tissue to heal and reduce your pain as well.
  • If you have severe sciatica or vertebrae that have slipped out of place, the healthcare team might recommend a steroid injection into the lower left back to reduce pain by reducing inflammation.
  • In addition to prescription treatments, your healthcare provider might recommend physical therapy to retrain movements, build strength, and help prevent back pain.

Moving Around

It’s important not to move too much. Rest is important for healing, although don’t stop moving entirely. These tips can also help (National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases, 2023)

  • Sleep on a firm mattress that will support your back.
  • Get a comfortable, ergonomic chair for your job.
  • If you work on your feet, learn to practice healthy posture and use shoes and insoles to facilitate and maintain correct posture.
  • Once you’ve healed, building your core strength may help avoid lower back pain in the future.

Reduce Restless Leg Syndrome and Improve Sleep: The Ultimate Guide | Call: 915-850-0900

Reduce Restless Leg Syndrome and Improve Sleep: The Ultimate Guide | Call: 915-850-0900 | Chiropractic + Wellness | Scoop.it

Can individuals find therapeutic ways to reduce restless leg syndrome and improve their sleep quality in their beds?

What Is Restless Leg Syndrome?

Do you feel general aches or leg pain, causing you to feel restless? Do you experience fatigue throughout the day, making it difficult to fall asleep? Or do you feel uncomfortable sensations in your legs, making falling and staying asleep difficult? Many people worldwide have experienced these issues known as restless leg syndrome. Also known as Willis-Ekbom disease, restless leg syndrome is often characterized by an uncomfortable urge to move legs when a person rests for the night and can be accompanied by unpleasant sensations that cause irresistible restlessness. (Gossard et al., 2021) Restless leg syndrome (RLS) can also be primary or secondary depending on the severity of the issue affecting the individual’s legs. Since the legs allow the individual to be mobile through walking, running, and jumping, the various muscles and tendons that make up the legs can succumb to RLS. As it is a chronic movement disorder, it is common to many individuals. It is associated with abnormal, non-painful sensations that are active when a person rests and relieved when they are in motion. (Mansur et al., 2025) We associate with certified medical providers who inform our patients of how restless leg syndrome affects their legs. While asking important questions to our associated medical providers, we advise patients to incorporate ways to reduce restless leg syndrome and restore their sleep quality. Dr. Alex Jimenez, D.C., envisions this information as an academic service. Disclaimer.

Causes

What causes individuals to develop RLS can often be correlated with environmental factors. Additionally, since RLS can be primary or secondary, the overlapping risk profiles also play a factor. Environmental factors like stress and anxiety can cause the central nervous system to go haywire, causing the sensations to set off and become worse. When RLS is primary, the central nervous system can cause the legs to develop RLS by not getting enough dopamine, which is a neurotransmitter that regulates body movement. The RLS symptoms can worsen when there isn’t enough dopamine in the body. When RLS is secondary, it could be due to iron deficiency that the brain areas have low levels of iron being transported to the blood-brain barrier and not being imported to the neuronal cells. (Vlasie et al., 2022) This can cause numerous symptoms and affect the legs when a person is trying to get a good night’s rest.

Posture Awareness From Text Neck Using Chiropractic Care | Call: 915-850-0900 | Chiropractic + Wellness | Scoop.it

Struggling with text neck? Find out how chiropractic care can help you reduce pain and improve your posture effectively.

Introduction

In today’s digital age, neck pain has become a widespread issue affecting millions of people worldwide. With the constant use of smartphones, tablets, and computers, many individuals experience discomfort that stems from poor posture. This condition, often referred to as “text neck,” results from the habitual forward head tilt that occurs when looking down at screens. According to global health data, neck pain ranks as a leading cause of disability, with an age-standardized prevalence of about 27 per 1,000 people (Kazeminasab et al., 2022). This article examines the causes and effects of text neck, including its symptoms, environmental factors, and the effectiveness of non-surgical approaches such as chiropractic care. We’ll also explore practical tips, exercises, and integrative therapies to help you find relief and prevent long-term issues.

Neck pain isn’t just a minor annoyance; it can disrupt daily life, work productivity, and overall well-being. Studies have shown that prolonged mobile phone use is correlated with increased severity of neck pain, particularly among younger users (Al-Hadidi et al., 2019). By understanding the root causes and adopting evidence-based strategies, you can take control of your posture and health. Drawing from clinical insights by experts like Dr. Alexander Jimenez, DC, APRN, FNP-BC, this guide emphasizes natural healing through targeted interventions rather than invasive procedures.

What Is Text Neck and How Does It Develop?

Text neck, also known as tech neck or forward head posture syndrome, refers to the strain on the cervical spine (the neck region) caused by repeatedly looking down at electronic devices. The term was popularized as smartphone usage surged, but it’s rooted in biomechanical issues. When you hold your head forward, it adds extra weight—up to 60 pounds of pressure on the neck for every inch of forward tilt (Jimenez, 2016). This overload stretches muscles, ligaments, and discs, leading to misalignment and pain.

The cervical spine consists of seven vertebrae (C1 to C7) that support the weight of the head, approximately 10-12 pounds, in a neutral position. In a healthy posture, the ears align over the shoulders, distributing weight evenly. However, environmental and lifestyle factors disrupt this balance. For instance, desk jobs with improper ergonomics or long commutes spent scrolling on phones exacerbate the problem. Research indicates that adolescents and young adults are particularly vulnerable, with prevalence rates of neck pain reaching 32% in some school populations (Ben Ayed et al., 2019).

Text neck isn’t a formal medical diagnosis but falls under the category of non-specific neck pain, which affects two-thirds of people at some point in their lives (Binder, 2008). It can progress from acute episodes, resolving in weeks, to chronic pain if unaddressed. Early recognition is key, as chronic cases may involve nerve compression or degenerative changes.

Chiropractic Emotional Regulation Support for Drivers | Call: 915-850-0900 or 915-412-6677

Chiropractic Emotional Regulation Support for Drivers | Call: 915-850-0900 or 915-412-6677 | Chiropractic + Wellness | Scoop.it

Driving requires focus, quick reflexes, and calm decision-making. Yet, many people get behind the wheel while experiencing strong emotions like anger, sadness, stress, or even excitement. This behavior, known as emotional driving, is a form of distracted or impaired driving that puts lives at risk (Lawyer Don, n.d.). Just as alcohol or texting can slow reaction time, so can powerful emotions. Emotional driving leads to poor judgment, impulsive actions, and delayed responses that increase the chance of accidents (Car Accident Help, n.d.).

At the same time, many people underestimate how emotional stress affects their bodies. Strong emotions create physical tension in muscles, raise blood pressure, and limit concentration. Chiropractic and integrative care—including functional medicine, massage therapy, and acupuncture—offer strategies to reduce this tension, restore balance, and help individuals regulate emotions more effectively. These treatments not only address physical stress but also support the mental resilience needed to drive safely.

This article explores what emotional driving is, why it is dangerous, and how chiropractic and integrative care can help. Drawing on research and the clinical observations of Dr. Alexander Jimenez, DC, APRN, FNP-BC, a dual-scope chiropractor and nurse practitioner in El Paso, we will also look at how integrative approaches can prevent accidents, improve recovery after injuries, and support long-term wellness.

What Is Emotional Driving?

Emotional driving happens when a driver’s attention is divided between the road and their emotional state. Strong emotions compete with cognitive focus, making it difficult to stay alert or make rational choices.

  • Anger or frustration can lead to aggressive driving, speeding, or tailgating.

  • Sadness or grief can cause distraction and a lack of attention to surroundings (Pintas & Mullins, n.d.).

  • Stress and anxiety impair concentration and slow decision-making.

  • Excitement or euphoria can cause overconfidence and risky maneuvers.

According to accident reports, emotional driving is responsible for many preventable crashes. When the brain is processing grief or intense feelings, it reduces its ability to perform complex tasks like driving (Pintas & Mullins, n.d.). Even positive emotions can be harmful, as they create over-stimulation that clouds judgment.

Why Emotional Driving Is Dangerous

Driving already requires balancing multiple tasks—steering, braking, monitoring mirrors, and watching traffic. Emotional distraction adds another layer of risk.

  1. Slower reaction times – A sad or stressed driver may react seconds later than a calm driver, making the difference between avoiding and causing a crash (Lawyer Don, n.d.).

  2. Impulsive decisions – Anger often fuels road rage behaviors, such as cutting off others or ignoring traffic signals.

  3. Tunnel vision – Emotional stress narrows focus, causing drivers to miss hazards in their peripheral vision (Dermer Law Firm, n.d.).

  4. Physical effects – Emotions can cause muscle tension, shallow breathing, and increased heart rates, all of which can interfere with smooth driving (Denver Chiropractic, n.d.).

In fact, emotional driving is often grouped with other dangerous behaviors like distracted driving and impaired driving because the results are similar—loss of control, poor awareness, and preventable collisions (Car Accident Help, n.d.).

The Physical Toll of Emotional Stress

The body reacts strongly to emotions. When stress hormones like cortisol flood the system, they trigger:

  • Tight neck and shoulder muscles

  • Back stiffness and spinal misalignment

  • Headaches and migraines

  • Digestive changes

If these effects build up, they make emotional regulation even harder. A tense body sends signals to the brain that reinforce feelings of unease or agitation. This cycle of stress and physical pain keeps drivers in a distracted state (Genesis Medical, n.d.).

Dr. Jimenez notes in his clinic that many patients who experience car accidents already had stress-related muscle tension before the crash. This not only makes them more vulnerable to injury but also complicates recovery. For this reason, his team addresses both the mental and physical sides of stress when treating patients.

Chiropractic Care and Stress Relief

Chiropractic care is often thought of as treatment for back pain, but its role in stress management is increasingly recognized. Adjustments help restore alignment to the spine and improve nervous system function. This reduces the body’s stress load, making it easier to stay calm and focused (Spine Clinic Salem, n.d.).

Benefits of Chiropractic Care for Emotional Drivers

  • Muscle relaxation – Adjustments and soft tissue therapies relieve tension caused by stress (MyEvolve Chiropractor, n.d.).

  • Better sleep – Chiropractic treatment has been linked to improved sleep, which restores mental clarity and emotional balance (HelloNote, n.d.).

  • Nervous system regulation – A healthy spine supports optimal communication between the brain and body, improving resilience to stress (RTOR, 2019).

Patients at Dr. Jimenez’s El Paso clinic often report feeling calmer and more balanced after chiropractic care. He explains that by reducing physical pain and restoring spinal alignment, the body is better equipped to handle emotional challenges—whether at work, at home, or on the road.

Integrative Medicine for Emotional Balance

Integrative health combines conventional medicine with complementary practices, such as mindfulness, massage, acupuncture, and nutrition. This approach targets both body and mind, offering tools to regulate emotions more effectively.

Key Integrative Strategies

  1. Mindfulness and meditation – Shown to improve self-awareness and reduce impulsive emotional reactions (Integrative Health Miami, n.d.).

  2. Massage therapy – Helps release stored muscle tension and improves circulation.

  3. Acupuncture – Restores energy flow, reduces stress hormones, and supports emotional regulation (Hopkins Medicine, n.d.).

  4. Nutrition and supplements – Functional medicine strategies that address inflammation and support mental health (Willows Healthcare, n.d.).

Research shows integrative care strengthens mental wellness and reduces the likelihood of stress impairing daily functions like driving (Indiana Wesleyan University, 2025; Assured Hope Health, n.d.).

Dr. Jimenez’s Clinical Perspective

As both a chiropractor and nurse practitioner, Dr. Alexander Jimenez, DC, APRN, FNP-BC, offers a unique dual-scope approach in El Paso. His clinic specializes in injury recovery for patients from work, sports, personal injuries, and motor vehicle accidents (MVAs).

How His Team Addresses Stress and Emotional Driving

  • Diagnostic assessments and advanced imaging – Used to identify how stress and trauma impact the spine and nervous system.

  • Chiropractic adjustments – Target spinal misalignments that heighten stress responses.

  • Functional medicine protocols – Including nutrition, supplements, and detox support to regulate cortisol levels.

  • Acupuncture and massage – Applied to reduce tension and support emotional regulation.

  • Exercise prescriptions – Tailored to release endorphins and restore mind-body balance.

  • Legal-medical integration – The clinic also documents injuries for personal injury cases, ensuring patients receive proper care and legal protection.

Dr. Jimenez emphasizes that recovery is not just about fixing physical injuries but about building resilience in body and mind. Addressing emotional stress through chiropractic and integrative medicine reduces the risks of impaired driving and improves long-term wellness.

Practical Tips to Avoid Emotional Driving

While care in a clinic is vital, individuals can also take steps to manage emotions before getting behind the wheel:

  • Pause before driving – Take a few minutes to breathe or stretch before starting the car.

  • Recognize triggers – Know which emotions cause you to lose focus and develop coping strategies.

  • Use integrative stress management – Practices like meditation or yoga can calm the body and mind before driving.

  • Seek care when needed – If emotional stress is overwhelming, chiropractic and integrative care can provide tools for balance.

Conclusion

Emotional driving is a serious but often overlooked danger. Strong emotions, such as anger, sadness, stress, or excitement, can impair reaction times, cloud judgment, and increase the risk of accidents. Because emotions also create physical tension in the body, drivers who regularly experience stress are more vulnerable to distracted or impaired driving.

Chiropractic and integrative care provide a solution. By reducing muscle tension, balancing the nervous system, and supporting emotional regulation through therapies like acupuncture, massage, mindfulness, and nutrition, individuals can build resilience against emotional stress.

As Dr. Alexander Jimenez’s clinic in El Paso demonstrates, treating both the physical and emotional aspects of stress not only improves recovery after injuries but also enhances daily performance, safety, and overall well-being. For those struggling with stress, integrating these practices can mean safer roads, stronger health, and a more balanced life.

Chiropractic Care: What You Should Know About Your Immune System | Call: 915-850-0900 | Chiropractic + Wellness | Scoop.it

Find out how chiropractic care can positively impact your immune system and promote a healthier lifestyle.

Introduction

Imagine your body as a bustling city, with your spine as the main highway connecting everything—muscles, organs, and even your immune system. When traffic (or in this case, pain) clogs up the works, the whole city suffers. Chiropractic care steps in like a skilled urban planner, clearing the roads and getting everything moving smoothly again. In this comprehensive guide, we’ll explore why chiropractic care, led by experts like Dr. Alexander Jimenez, DC, APRN, FNP-BC, is a game-changer for reducing musculoskeletal and viscerosomatic pain while boosting your immune system naturally. We’ll delve into the science, sprinkle in some practical tips, and highlight how Dr. Jimenez’s unique approach in El Paso, Texas, helps personal injury victims regain their footing. So, buckle up—it’s going to be an informative (and slightly fun) ride!

Understanding Musculoskeletal Pain: The Body’s Traffic Jam

Musculoskeletal pain is like that annoying roadblock on your morning commute—it slows you down and makes everything harder. This type of pain affects the muscles, bones, ligaments, tendons, and nerves, often stemming from injuries, poor posture, or conditions like scoliosis. It’s incredibly common, with low back pain alone being a leading cause of disability worldwide (Hawk et al., 2020). But what causes this pain, and why does it sometimes feel like your whole body is staging a protest?

Factors Contributing to Musculoskeletal Pain

  1. Poor Posture and Sedentary Lifestyles: Slouching at your desk or binge-watching your favorite show for hours can strain your spine and muscles, leading to pain. It’s like leaving your car parked in a bad spot—it’s fine for a while, but eventually, it’s going to cause trouble.
  2. Injuries and Trauma: Car accidents, workplace injuries, or even a clumsy slip on the sidewalk can cause misalignments in the spine, known as subluxations, which irritate nerves and muscles (Jimenez, 2016).
  3. Scoliosis and Structural Issues: Scoliosis, an abnormal sideways curvature of the spine, can disrupt your body’s alignment, leading to chronic pain and mobility issues (Morningstar, 2011).
  4. Inflammation and Stress: Chronic inflammation, often triggered by stress or poor diet, can exacerbate musculoskeletal pain. It’s like pouring sugar into your car’s gas tank—it gums up the system.
  5. Viscerosomatic Connections: Your organs and muscles are more connected than you might think. Viscerosomatic pain occurs when dysfunction in an internal organ refers pain to the musculoskeletal system, creating a vicious cycle of discomfort (El Paso Chiropractor, 2016).

How Musculoskeletal Pain Impacts the Immune System

Your immune system is like the city’s defense force, always on guard to protect you from invaders like bacteria and viruses. But when musculoskeletal pain takes hold, it can weaken this defense. Chronic pain increases stress hormones, such as cortisol, which suppresses immune function (Segerstrom & Miller, 2004). This creates a domino effect: pain leads to stress, stress weakens the immune system, and a weakened immune system can exacerbate pain by increasing inflammation. It’s like your body’s security team going on strike during a city-wide crisis.

Viscerosomatic Pain: The Hidden Culprit

Viscerosomatic pain is the sneaky saboteur of the pain world. It occurs when issues in your internal organs—like digestive problems or heart strain—manifest as pain in your muscles or joints. For example, a struggling gut might cause back pain, or heart issues could lead to shoulder discomfort. Chiropractic care addresses these connections by restoring balance to the nervous system, which coordinates both organ and muscle function (El Paso Chiropractor, 2016).

Understand the role of chiropractic care in addressing sacroiliac joint pain and restoring your physical comfort.

Introduction

Well, hello there, folks! It’s your ol’ pal Herman Munster, stompin’ my way through the creaky corridors of health and wellness to bring you the lowdown on sacroiliac joint pain and hip pain. Now, I know what you’re thinkin’—Herman, with my clunky boots and stitched-up frame, I must know a thing or two about achy joints, right? You bet your bolts I do! Today, we’re gonna dive into why chiropractic care, especially from a fine fella like Dr. Alexander Jimenez, DC, APRN, FNP-BC, can help ease that pesky pain in your sacroiliac (SI) joint and hips. We’ll explore how these pains are connected, why they happen, and how you can make small changes to your daily routine to keep those joints happier than Grandpa Munster with a fresh batch of bat-wing stew. Plus, we’ll talk about Dr. Jimenez’s special knack for helping personal injury victims in El Paso with his fancy imaging and dual-scope procedures. So, grab a seat—preferably one that doesn’t creak like my old coffin—and let’s get started!

Understanding the Sacroiliac Joint and Hip Pain: The Connection

Let’s start with the basics, shall we? The sacroiliac joint—SI joint for short—is like the unsung hero of your pelvis. It’s where your sacrum (that triangular bone at the base of your spine) shakes hands with your iliac bones (part of your pelvis). This joint is a real workhorse, supporting your upper body, absorbing shock, and helping you move like you’re dancing at a Munster family reunion. But when it gets cranky, oh boy, it can cause a ruckus, leading to lower back pain, buttock pain, and even hip pain that makes you wince like you just saw Cousin Itt’s latest haircut.

Hip pain, on the other hand, can come from the hip joint itself or sneak in from nearby troublemakers like the SI joint. The two are like mischievous twins, often causing overlapping symptoms that can confuse even the sharpest of docs. SI joint dysfunction can send pain radiating to the hips, making it feel like your hip joint is the culprit when it’s really just the SI joint throwing a tantrum. Studies show that SI joint dysfunction is a common cause of low back pain, affecting 10-25% of folks with lower back issues, and it often masquerades as hip pain (Polly & Sembrano, 2016).

Why does this happen? Well, the SI joint and hip are neighbors in the pelvis, sharing muscles, ligaments, and nerves. If the SI joint gets out of whack—say, from a misstep or sitting too long in a chair that’s less comfy than my favorite crypt—it can irritate nearby tissues, causing pain that feels like it’s coming from the hip. Conditions like arthritis, pregnancy, or even a good ol’ slip-and-fall can mess with the SI joint, leading to inflammation (sacroiliitis) or misalignment that sends pain to the hips (Jimenez, 2025a).

The Clinical Rationale for Chiropractic Care

Now, let’s talk about why chiropractic care is like a warm hug from Lily Munster for your achy SI joint and hips. Chiropractic care, especially from someone as skilled as Dr. Jimenez, focuses on getting your body back in alignment without resorting to pills or scalpels. Here’s the clinical scoop on why it works:

Realigning the SI Joint

When your SI joint is misaligned, it’s like a door hinge that’s gone wonky—everything creaks and groans. Chiropractors use spinal adjustments, which are precise, controlled movements to nudge the SI joint back into place. These adjustments, often called high-velocity, low-amplitude (HVLA) thrusts, can restore proper alignment, reduce inflammation, and ease pain faster than you can say “Munster mash” (Jimenez, 2025a). Research backs this up, showing that chiropractic adjustments can significantly reduce SI joint pain by improving joint mobility and reducing muscle tension (Wong et al., 2017).

Reducing Inflammation

Inflammation in the SI joint, or sacroiliitis, is like a grumpy dragon breathing fire in your pelvis. Chiropractic adjustments and soft tissue therapies, like myofascial release, can calm that dragon by improving blood flow and reducing swelling. This helps relieve pain not just in the SI joint but also in the hips, where referred pain often hangs out (Gartenberg et al., 2021).

Restoring Mobility

A stiff SI joint can make you move like you’re auditioning for a Frankenstein role. Chiropractic care, through adjustments and exercises, improves your range of motion. This is crucial because limited mobility in the SI joint can stress the hip joint, leading to pain and dysfunction (Falowski et al., 2019). By getting the SI joint moving smoothly, chiropractors help take the pressure off your hips.

Chiropractic Care Methods for Ligament Injuries & Knee Pain | Call: 915-850-0900 | Chiropractic + Wellness | Scoop.it

Find relief from knee pain caused by ligament injuries with the support of chiropractic care. Your path to recovery starts here.

Introduction

Knee pain is a common musculoskeletal and ligament issue that can sideline anyone, from weekend warriors to those just trying to climb stairs without wincing. When it comes to ligament injuries, the stakes are even higher—think of your knee as a hinge that’s taken one too many hits from life’s sledgehammer. Chiropractic care, particularly under the expertise of professionals like Dr. Alexander Jimenez, DC, APRN, FNP-BC, offers a non-invasive, holistic approach to managing knee pain and supporting recovery from ligament injuries. In this comprehensive and academic guide, we will explore the clinical rationale behind chiropractic care for knee pain, delve into the musculoskeletal system’s role in lower extremity injuries, examine environmental factors contributing to knee pain, and highlight Dr. Jimenez’s unique approach to personal injury cases in El Paso. With a sprinkle of dark humor to keep things light, we will navigate the science and solutions for getting you back on your feet—without the creaks and groans.

The Knee: A Complex Hinge Under Pressure

The knee is a marvel of engineering, but like any overworked piece of machinery, it is prone to breaking down. As the largest joint in the body that connects the femur (thigh bone) to the tibia (shin bone), with the patella (kneecap) acting as a shield and the fibula providing lateral support. Ligaments—tough, fibrous bands—hold this structure together, ensuring stability while allowing movement. The key players are:

  • Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL): Prevents the tibia from sliding too far forward.
  • Posterior Cruciate Ligament (PCL): Keeps the tibia from sliding backward.
  • Medial Collateral Ligament (MCL): Stabilizes the inner knee.
  • Lateral Collateral Ligament (LCL): Stabilizes the outer knee.
  • Menisci: C-shaped cartilage pieces that act as shock absorbers between the femur and tibia.

These structures work in harmony with muscles (like the quadriceps and hamstrings) and tendons to facilitate walking, running, and jumping. However, when ligaments are injured—whether through a sprain, partial tear, or complete rupture—the knee’s stability and function take a hit. Imagine your knee as a poorly maintained suspension bridge: one snapped cable (ligament), and the whole structure wobbles, causing pain and limiting mobility.

Ligament injuries often result from sudden twists, impacts, or overuse. For example, a soccer player pivoting to dodge a tackle might tear their ACL, while a desk jockey who sits all day could develop knee pain from tight muscles pulling on ligaments. Environmental factors, such as uneven surfaces, improper footwear, or repetitive stress, exacerbate these issues. According to Dr. Alexander Jimenez, musculoskeletal imbalances—think tight hamstrings or misaligned hips—can place undue stress on knee ligaments, leading to pain and injury (Jimenez, n.d.).

Why Knee Pain and Ligament Injuries Happen

Knee pain does not just show up to ruin your day—it is often the result of a perfect storm of biomechanical, environmental, and lifestyle factors. Let us break it down:

Biomechanical Culprits

The musculoskeletal system is like a chain gang: if one link (say, your hip or ankle) slacks off, the knee takes the brunt of the punishment. Misalignments in the spine, pelvis, or lower extremities can alter how force is distributed across the knee. For instance, a varus (bow-legged) or valgus (knock-kneed) alignment can strain ligaments, increasing the risk of injury (Hicks et al., 2017). When there are weak or tight muscles, such as the quadriceps or iliotibial band, they can also tug on ligaments, causing instability or pain.

Environmental and Lifestyle Factors

Your environment is out to get your knees—seriously. Uneven surfaces, like that charming cobblestone path you thought was a shortcut, can cause missteps that stress ligaments. Improper footwear, such as heels that make you wobble like a newborn giraffe, shifts pressure onto the knee. Repetitive activities, like running on concrete or kneeling for hours (carpenters, we are looking at you), wear down cartilage and strain ligaments. Obesity adds insult to injury, as excess weight piles pressure on the knee, accelerating wear and tear (El Paso Chiropractor, 2016).

Ligament-Specific Injuries

Ligament injuries range from mild sprains to full-on tears. Common culprits include:

  • ACL Tears: Usually occur during sports involving sudden stops or pivots, like basketball or skiing. The knee buckles, and you are left feeling like your leg’s auditioning for a horror movie.
  • MCL Sprains: Common in contact sports, where a blow to the outer knee stretches the inner ligament.
  • Meniscal Tears: These can accompany ligament injuries, causing locking or clicking sensations (Felson et al., 2018).
  • Posterolateral Corner (PLC) Injuries: Less common but devastating, often involving multiple ligaments and requiring complex management (Shon et al., 2016).

These injuries disrupt the knee’s stability, leading to pain, swelling, and reduced mobility. Left untreated, they can contribute to osteoarthritis, where cartilage degrades, and bones grind like a bad DJ (Felson et al., 2018).

The Clinical Rationale for Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic care is not just about cracking backs—it is a science-backed approach to restoring balance in the musculoskeletal system. For knee pain and ligament injuries, chiropractors like Dr. Alexander Jimenez focus on addressing the root causes, not just masking symptoms with painkillers (which are about as helpful as a Band-Aid on a broken bridge).

  • Caution: While generally safe, chiropractic care should be pursued under the guidance of a professional, as outcomes depend on the practitioner’s expertise and the patient’s condition.

What Is Chiropractic Care?

Chiropractic care is a healthcare approach that emphasizes the spine’s role in overall health. By using manual adjustments, chiropractors aim to correct misalignments, or subluxations, that may disrupt nervous system function, leading to pain or reduced mobility. This non-invasive method is particularly appealing for those seeking alternatives to medication or surgery for musculoskeletal issues.

Why It Matters for Musculoskeletal Health

Musculoskeletal issues, such as back pain or joint problems, affect millions, impacting daily activities like walking, working, or even sleeping. Research suggests these conditions are a leading cause of disability worldwide (Vasquez, 1996). Chiropractic care provides a means to address these issues by improving alignment and function, which can potentially reduce pain and enhance overall quality of life.

Dr. Alexander Jimenez’s Expertise

In El Paso, Texas, Dr. Alexander Jimenez stands out as a chiropractor and nurse practitioner specializing in personal injury cases. His use of advanced imaging, like MRI, and diagnostic evaluations helps tailor treatments, ensuring patients receive both medical care and legal support for injury claims (Jimenez, n.d.).

A Note of Caution

While chiropractic care shows promise, it’s not a one-size-fits-all solution. Outcomes vary, and some conditions may require additional treatments. Always consult a qualified healthcare provider to determine the best course of action for your specific needs.

Comprehensive Guide to Chiropractic Care for Musculoskeletal Issues

Introduction

Chiropractic care is a cornerstone of natural healthcare, focusing on the musculoskeletal system—particularly the spine—to alleviate pain, improve mobility, and enhance overall well-being. By using hands-on techniques, chiropractors correct spinal misalignments, known as subluxations, which can interfere with the nervous system and lead to various health issues. This approach is especially effective for musculoskeletal conditions, which affect millions and are a leading cause of disability worldwide (Vasquez, 1996).

In this extensive guide, we’ll explore how chiropractic care addresses five common musculoskeletal issues: subluxation, scoliosis, disk degeneration, carpal tunnel syndrome, and Achilles tendonitis. We’ll provide clinical insights from reputable sources, including Dr. Alexander Jimenez, a distinguished chiropractor and nurse practitioner in El Paso, Texas. Additionally, we’ll highlight Dr. Jimenez’s role in personal injury cases, where his expertise in advanced diagnostics bridges the gap between medical and legal needs. To keep things engaging, we’ll sprinkle in a bit of humor—think Herman Munster bumbling through a fix-it job—but we’ll conclude with a serious note to emphasize the importance of professional care.

We’ll also incorporate findings from recent research on iron overload, gluteal muscle activation, mitochondrial dysfunction in osteoarthritis, and brain plasticity in spinal cord injuries, offering a deeper understanding of how chiropractic care fits into a holistic health framework.

Section 1: Subluxation – The Domino Effect of Misalignment

Picture your spine as a row of dominoes: if one tips out of place, the whole line can tumble, much like Herman Munster trying to fix a leaky pipe and flooding the house instead. In chiropractic terms, this misalignment is referred to as a subluxation—a dysfunction in the spine resulting from trauma, poor posture, arthritis, or muscle spasms. Subluxations can lead to back pain, headaches, or even organ dysfunction if nerves are compressed (Jimenez, n.d.).

How It Affects Daily Life

Subluxations can make everyday tasks, such as sitting at a desk or lifting groceries, painful or difficult. They may cause stiffness, reduced mobility, or radiating pain, which can impact work productivity and quality of life.

Chiropractic Solution

Chiropractors use gentle, targeted adjustments to realign the spine, restoring proper nerve function and allowing the body to heal naturally. Over multiple sessions, these adjustments reduce pain and prevent nerve impingement, promoting long-term spinal health.

Clinical Rationale

According to Dr. Alexander Jimenez, subluxations disrupt nervous system communication, leading to a cascade of health issues (Jimenez, n.d.). By correcting these misalignments, chiropractic care supports the body’s natural healing processes. Research also suggests that spinal manipulation can reduce pain and improve function in patients with musculoskeletal complaints (Vasquez, 1996).

Section 2: Scoliosis – Managing the Spinal Curve

Scoliosis, an abnormal lateral curvature of the spine that forms an “S” or “C” shape, can feel like your spine has taken a scenic detour. Often caused by trauma or abnormal bone development in children, it affects about 2–3% of the population (Weinstein et al., 2003). While severe cases may require surgery, chiropractic care offers a conservative approach to managing symptoms.

How It Affects Daily Life

Scoliosis can cause back pain, uneven shoulders, or difficulty standing upright, making activities such as sports or prolonged periods of sitting challenging. It may also lead to self-consciousness about one’s posture, especially in adolescents.

Chiropractic Solution

Chiropractors use manual manipulation to improve spinal alignment and posture, often complemented by exercises and lifestyle advice. While not a cure, these interventions can help reduce pain and slow the progression of the curve in some cases.

Chiropractic Care Basics For Joint and Biomechanical Restoration | Call: 915-850-0900 | Chiropractic + Wellness | Scoop.it

Achieve better health with biomechanical restoration from chiropractic care, focusing on enhancing joint performance and comfort.

Introduction

Your body is a finely tuned machine, with joints and bones working together like gears and levers. When everything is aligned, you move smoothly, like a well-oiled machine. However, when something is off—say, after a fender-bender or years of slouching at a desk—those gears start grinding, causing pain and stiffness. That is where chiropractic care comes in, acting like a skilled mechanic to get your body back in gear.

Chiropractic care is a healthcare profession by focusing and ulitizing diagnosing and treating musculoskeletal disorders of the spine and surrounding areas. Through hands-on adjustments, chiropractors aim to correct misalignments, reduce joint-muscle pain, and enhance the body’s overall function. This blog post examines how chiropractic care can support joint and biomechanical restoration, drawing on clinical insights from Dr. Alexander Jimenez, a renowned chiropractor and nurse practitioner in El Paso, Texas. We will explore the correlation between environmental factors and joint pain, the chiropractic care role in personal injury cases, and the underlying science, all while sprinkling in a small amount of humor to keep things light. However, do not worry; we will conclude with a serious note to ensure you take this information to heart.

Section 1: Clinical Rationale for Chiropractic Care in Joint and Biomechanical Restoration

The Basics of Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic care is all about getting your body back to its natural state of balance. Think of your spine as the backbone of your body’s structure. When it is misaligned, it can throw everything off—joints, muscles, even nerves. Chiropractors use manual techniques, like spinal adjustments, to correct these misalignments, known as subluxations. These adjustments involve applying controlled force to specific joints to restore proper alignment and movement.

The clinical rationale for chiropractic care in joint and biomechanical restoration boils down to a few key principles:

  • Restoring Alignment: Misaligned joints can lead to uneven wear, pain, and reduced mobility. Adjustments help realign these joints, allowing them to function smoothly.
  • Reducing Nerve Pressure: Misalignments can irritate nerves, leading to pain or dysfunction in areas distant from the spine. By addressing these issues, chiropractors can alleviate nerve pressure, thereby enhancing overall function.
  • Enhancing Mobility: Stiff joints limit movement, making everyday tasks feel like climbing Mount Everest. Adjustments can increase the range of motion, making movement easier and less painful.
  • Promoting Healing: Proper alignment enhances blood flow and reduces inflammation, creating an environment that facilitates tissue healing more effectively.

Scientific Support

Research backs up these benefits. A study published in Clinical Neurophysiology found that cervical spine manipulation can alter sensorimotor integration, as shown by changes in somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs). Following a single adjustment, there was a significant decrease in the amplitude of certain SEP components, indicating that chiropractic care may influence how the brain processes sensory information. This could explain why adjustments often lead to pain relief and better function (Haavik-Taylor & Murphy, 2007).

Another study investigated the impact of spinal manipulation on posture control, a crucial aspect of biomechanics. The brain and spinal cord has a casual relationship, working together to maintain balance, and misalignments can disrupt this process. Chiropractic adjustments may help restore proper neural communication, improving posture and stability (Takakusaki, 2017).

What are the benefits of having a dual chiropractor and nurse practitioner license in personal injury cases and auto accidents?

Chiropractic and Nurse Practitioner On Auto Accidents

Both nurse practitioners and chiropractors are essential in treating injuries and accelerating healing following a car accident. While nurse practitioners offer comprehensive care, including assessments, diagnoses, treatment plans, and education, frequently working with specialists to maximize patient outcomes, chiropractors concentrate on manual therapies, such as adjustments and manipulations, to address musculoskeletal issues and restore mobility. (Physicians Group, LLC, 2024) Chiropractors can help with car accident injuries in several ways.

Chiropractors

Chiropractors treat musculoskeletal injuries, such as back and neck pain, common in auto accidents. They use hands-on techniques to relieve pain and improve mobility, often without medications. Their detailed records and expert testimony can also support personal injury claims, helping prove the extent of injuries. (Dies, S., & Strapp, J. W., 1992)

Diagnosis and Treatment of Musculoskeletal Issues

  • Chiropractors can identify and address spinal misalignments, muscle spasms, and soft tissue injuries that may occur after an accident. (The Neck and Back Clinics, 2025)

Pain Relief

  • Manual therapies like spinal adjustments and soft tissue mobilization can help alleviate pain and reduce inflammation.

Improved Mobility

  • By addressing joint and muscle restrictions, chiropractors can help restore range of motion and improve overall function.

Holistic Care

  • Chiropractors often focus on the entire body and can help patients maintain good posture, ergonomics, and overall well-being to prevent future injuries.

Collaboration with Other Healthcare Professionals

  • Chiropractors can work closely with physicians, physical therapists, and other specialists to create a comprehensive treatment plan for the patient. (Physicians Group, LLC, 2024)

Nurse Practitioners

Nurse practitioners can provide comprehensive care for motor vehicle accident injuries, including: (Integrity Spine & Orthopedics, 2024)

Assessment and Diagnosis

  • Nurse practitioners can conduct physical exams, interpret diagnostic tests, and diagnose injuries such as whiplash, soft tissue injuries, and concussions.

Treatment Plans

  • They can develop personalized treatment plans that include medications, physical therapy, and other interventions to address the patient's specific needs.

Patient Education

  • Nurse practitioners can educate patients on their injuries, recovery, and self-care strategies to promote healing and prevent complications.

Coordination of Care

  • They can coordinate care with other specialists, such as surgeons, neurologists, and physical therapists, to ensure a holistic approach to treatment.

Follow-up Care

  • Nurse practitioners can monitor the patient's progress, adjust treatment plans as needed, and provide ongoing support throughout recovery.

Personal injury cases, particularly those arising from auto accidents, often involve complex medical and legal needs. Chiropractors and nurse practitioners, with their distinct scopes of practice, play pivotal roles in diagnosis, treatment, and documentation.

Both chiropractors and NPs bring unique strengths to personal injury cases. Chiropractors focus on musculoskeletal issues, offering non-invasive treatments, while NPs manage broader medical needs, including prescribing medications and coordinating care. Their collaboration can enhance patient outcomes, as seen in settings like the Accident Care and Treatment Center, where NPs and physicians supervise care, complementing chiropractic interventions. (Accident Care, 2025)

Legal resources suggest that documentation from both professionals is critical for insurance claims and settlements. Chiropractors' detailed reports on spinal injuries and NPs' comprehensive medical records on overall health can provide a robust case for compensation. This synergy is particularly evident in auto accident scenarios, where patients may require physical adjustments and medical oversight for full recovery. (Chiropractic Economics, 2023)

Find out how gua-sha and chiropractic care can alleviate tension and improve mobility. Transform your health with this holistic practice.

Introduction

When it comes to many individuals dealing with musculoskeletal pain, it can be due to many environmental factors that can affect the body. Excessive movement can affect different body areas, from overly stressful days to injuries. Some of the more common musculoskeletal issues are neck, shoulder, and back pain. These muscle issues can cause referred pain to the upper and lower extremities while causing the affected muscles to become tight and stiff. When individuals are experiencing musculoskeletal pain, many can incorporate non-surgical treatments to not only relax the body but also reduce the overlapping symptoms of musculoskeletal pain affecting the muscles. One of the most underutilized and effective tools that can help relax the affected muscles is Gua Sha therapy.

What is Gua-Sha?

Gua Sha is a traditional healing technique incorporating a smooth-edged tool made from either jade, rose quartz, or metal to scrape the skin gently. This technique has been used regularly in China and Southeast Asia and has therapeutic properties to restore the body’s chi or energy. “Gua Sha” means scraping stagnant blood to increase circulation beneath the skin. Thus enhancing the immune surveillance function of the affected muscle. (Chu et al., 2021) GuaSha therapy can be a powerful therapeutic tool for reducing inflammation in soft tissues, improving mobility within the extremities, and relieving muscle pain

A Clinical Approach To Identity Formation: A Comprehensive Guide | Call: 915-850-0900 | Chiropractic + Wellness | Scoop.it

Understand the clinical approach of identity formation and its role in shaping identities during various stages of personal growth.

Introduction

Many individuals deal with musculoskeletal, autoimmune, gut, or body issues that can affect their daily routine and how they perceive themselves when getting checked out by their doctors. Many healthcare professionals can help assess individuals with these pain-like symptoms causing overlapping risk profiles by creating a safe and positive experience with a clinical approach. By creating a secure environment, many individuals can have good experiences when pain-like issues are affecting their bodies. By delving into today’s article, we are going to look into identity formation, the four identity statuses, and the various areas of identity development.

Theories & Types of Identity Formation

Many people have an identity, but have they always had one? Identity is a combination of qualities, beliefs, and traits everyone deems important and uses to describe who they are. Identities aren’t imposed onto people; they are formed as many individuals grow and learn about the world. The first time people see a major shift towards self-exploration and identity formation is during adolescence.

Theories of adolescent development often focus on identity formation as a central issue. For example, in Erikson’s 1968 classic theory of developmental stages, identity formation was highlighted as the primary indicator of successful development during adolescence. Role confusion may occur if a teen cannot form their identity, indicating a need for more self-discovery and unsure where they fit in.

The Humanistic Perspective

The humanistic perspective became prominent in the mid-20th century due to psychoanalytic theory and behaviorism. Individuals who emphasize human potential and a person’s ability to change are known as humanism. At the same time, humanism rejects the idea of biological determinism, which is defined as the idea that most human characteristics, both physical and mental, are determined at conception. The humanistic perspective focuses on how people develop and emphasizes an individual’s inherent drive toward self-actualization and creativity. Additionally, it is fundamental to the humanistic perspective as it is the notion that development is viewed as a continuous process while being impacted more by a person’s environmental and social circumstances than genetics or nature-related factors. Many well-known humanistic theorists like Carl Rogers and Abraham Maslow studied how the human perspective is implemented in a clinical approach. This ensures a more positive outlook to improve patient and nurse practitioners’ outcomes while allowing a better understanding of pain, discomfort, and emotions. (Boston-Leary et al., 2024)

Understanding Myofascial Pain Syndrome Spasm Cycles | Call: 915-850-0900 or 915-412-6677 | Chiropractic + Wellness | Scoop.it

For individuals who have to be in one position for long periods, have poor postural alignment, and perform repetitive motions, what are myofascial pain syndrome spasm cycles?

Myofascial Pain Syndrome Spasm Cycles

Myofascial pain syndrome is a common condition that causes pain symptoms in a particular body area (Jafri M. S. 2014). A myofascial pain syndrome spasm cycle is a recurring pattern in which muscle tension and spasms in affected regions, caused by myofascial pain syndrome, lead to pain, triggering more muscle spasms. This creates a vicious cycle of discomfort and tightness that can be difficult to break without treatment; the pain perpetuates muscle spasms and vice versa.

Spasm Pain Cycle

Left untreated, myofascial pain is often experienced as a recurring cycle of spasm, pain, and spasm. (Kojidi M. M. et al., O2016) The exact cause of the spasm is not known. It may be related to excessive accumulation and release of acetylcholine, which causes sustained muscle contraction. (Nicol A, Crooks M, Hsu E, Ferrante M. 2018) Another theory is that repetitive small muscle trauma helps create a trigger point or knot in the muscle. (Thorne. 2021)

Active trigger points in muscles characterize myofascial pain syndrome. (Shah J. P. et al., 2015) These trigger points cause pain in the area where they are located and sometimes in other places, known as referred pain. Each muscle has a particular referral pattern of pain that goes from a trigger point in that muscle to another place in the body. (Shah J. P. et al., 2015) Medical providers and massage therapists trained in this area can identify trigger points by their pain patterns. With myofascial pain syndrome, muscles tense, and joint range of motion may decrease. (Jafri M. S. 2014)

Trigger Points

  • Myofascial pain syndrome is characterized by trigger points and sensitive knots within muscles that can cause referred pain when pressed, contributing to the spasm cycle.

Muscle Tension

  • A repeatedly tense or injured muscle can develop trigger points, which can lead tocle tightness and potential spasms.

Pain-Spasm-Pain Cycle

  • The pain from a trigger point can cause the muscle to further contract and spasm, leading to even more pain and perpetuating the cycle.

How Spasms and Pain Present

Myofascial pain is often caused by long periods of poor postural alignment, muscle injury, and repetitive motions. (Cleveland Clinic, 2023) For example, the upper body slumps forward when sitting at a desk workstation all day. The upper section of the trapezius muscle is located on the back of the neck and the top of the shoulder. The upper trapezius muscle works to raise the head. (Yoo W. G. 2015) The trapezius muscle now has to work more than it is used to. This overuse may cause microscopic muscle injury, leading to muscle spasms and pain. (Bron C., & Dommerholt J. D. 2012) (Nicol A, Crooks M, Hsu E, Ferrante M. 2018) Without treatment, the muscle spasms, pain, and microscopic muscle injury may persist or worsen, leading to trigger points and chronic pain. (Jafri M. S. 2014)

Causes

Repetitive Motions

  • Repeating the same movement, like typing on a computer, can trigger muscle tension and points.

Poor Posture

  • Maintaining incorrect posture for extended periods can strain muscles and contribute to trigger point development.

Muscle Injury

  • Past injuries can leave muscles susceptible to developing trigger points and pain cycles.

Stress

  • Psychological stress can lead to muscle tension and exacerbate existing trigger points.

Break the Cycle

Physical Therapy

  • A physical therapist can use stretching, massage, and trigger point therapy to release muscle tension and address trigger points.

Exercise
