This was one of Mountain View's most solid matches of the season. To pick just one Player of the Match doesn't do it justice. However, Chanti Holroyd definitely inspired her teammates and the crowd with 23 kills in the 3 set sweep over rival Los Gatos. Her stat line also included an ace, 11 digs, and 11 perfect passes on 17 attempts. Sola Takahashi had a flawless hitting night, with 7 kills and no errors on 16 swings (.438). Emma Blockhus matched the 7 kill total. Both were also impressive at the net, Sola with 2 blocks while Emma had 4. Eleonore Johansen chipped in 5 kills and 7 digs. Both Eleonore and Lauren Price had 4 blocks. Moira Huang was very strong with her serving and defense, getting 8 digs and an ace. Sophie Karolczak saved her best match of the season for the playoffs, with 14 digs, 3 aces, and very steady passing. Setter, Cynthia Moir, dished out 33 assists to provide a very balanced Spartan attack, getting all 5 of her hitters involved.

Mountain View is taking a lot of momentum into the Central Coast Section Division II volleyball playoffs. The Spartans defeated visiting Palo Alto 27-25, 25-16, 25-20 in the final Santa Clara Valley Athletic League De Anza Division contest on Thursday night. Mountain View is 29-5 overall, 9-3 in league, finishing in a tie for second with Los Gatos.
"If you would said I'd be 29-5 and tied for second in league before the year started, I would have taken it," Mountain View coach Dave Winn said. "I'm a happy camper."
The Spartans rallied from 17-10 down in Game 1, closing the game out on a 17-8 run. Outside hitter Chanti Holroyd, playing in front of the home crowd on senior night, had 16 kills, hitting .364. Holroyd will play sand volleyball at UCLA next year.
"Chanti is a one of a kind player," Winn said. "She's in a league of her own. She had a solid performance. She came in when were down in Game 1 and gave us a spark at the service line."
The Vikings, who finished 7-5 in the De Anza Division, take a 23-12 record into the CCS Division I playoffs.

Mountain View girls volleyball coach Dave Winn has coached in the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League De Anza Division for the past 14 seasons. After defeating host Gunn-Palo Alto 25-20, 25-13, 24-26, 25-23 on Tuesday night, the first-place Spartans improved their record to 17-2 overall, 4-1 in the De Anza. Three teams -- Los Altos, Los Gatos and Palo Alto -- are 3-1 in the De Anza. "I've never seen it like this with four teams near the top," Winn said. "There is so much parity. Los Altos is still the favorite because of their experience and depth." Chanti Holroyd had 21 kills, 22 digs and two aces to lead the Spartans against the Titans. Emma Blockhus and Sola Takahashi had nine kills each with Blockhus adding three blocks. Sophie Karolczak had 25 digs and four aces for the Spartans, while Moira Huang added 16 digs. Setter Cynthia Moir had 49 assists. The Titans (10-8, 1-3 De Anza) had 31 digs from Emma Munch and 28 digs and 35 assists from Amy Wang. Jessica Li had nine kills with Tara Tracy chipping in eight kills. "Gunn played great defense," Winn said. "They came within two points of pushing us to a fifth game. They are scrappy." The Spartans host Los Gatos Thursday evening with Gunn welcoming Palo Alto.

MOUNTAIN VIEW -- Someone from Mountain View's wacky cheering section couldn't resist grabbing the broom that's used on the Chester F. Awalt Gymnasium floor. Despite a late push by Los Altos, a sweep it was for the Spartans, who prevailed 25-23, 25-21, 25-20 in a Santa Clara Valley Athletic League De Anza Division volleyball match on Thursday evening. It was the first win by Mountain View (10-1, 1-1 De Anza) over the Eagles (6-3, 1-1 De Anza) in, at least, three years, according to Mountain View coach Dave Winn. "It has been a long time for these girls," Winn said. "I looked on Maxpreps and it was, at least, three years ago." Winn was especially animated, celebrating crucial points in the third set, then the final point when aptly named middle blocker Emma Blockhus executed a block to end it. "Mountain View made less errors than we did," Los Altos coach Peter Kim said. "They brought a lot of energy. I'm sure they wanted to beat us pretty badly. We've, pretty much, had their number the past few years. What are you going to do?" Game 1 was intense as both teams came out firing. Lulu Kishton got the first of her 22 kills and the Eagles led 1-0. Chanti Holroyd, who led the Spartans in kills with 17, tapped one down and the match was on. The Spartans had some early work from sophomore opposite Eleonore Johansen, who had four kills and was a big presence at the net. A Johansen block and a kill from the back row by Holroyd and it was a 6-4 Spartans' lead. The Eagles countered with an ace from Katherine Mumm to get within 8-7. One of eight kills by Blockhus and an ace by Moira Huang put the Spartans up 10-7. A dink by Megan Wilhelm trimmed the lead to 11-10. Wilhelm served a mini-run for the Eagles, who took a 15-14 lead with Wilhelm on the serving line. A block by Mumm silenced the Spartans' crowd. Back-to-back kills by Kishton, who worked the left side, and the Eagles led 19-16. Blockhus got a tap at the net to go, then Holroyd lowered the boom with a kill. A cross-set from Cynthia Moir -- who had 31 assists -- to Holroyd for another stinging kill and the set was tied 22-22. Alexis Malgesini got a winner and the Eagles led 23-22. Johansen ended the game on a tap into the middle of the Eagles' defense. Mountain View had a better grip on Game 2, up 10-6 on a dink from Holroyd. The Spartans had leads of 15-7 and 19-12 on a Johansen kill. The Eagles rallied to close within 23-20 on two winners from Wilhelm, who had seven kills and nine digs. A tap by Blockhus and a hit into the net by the Eagles and the Spartans had a 2-0 lead in games. "Blockhus has been a good player all these years," Kim said. "She did well this match." "The team played hard together," Blockhus said. "The passing was up and the setting was up. We had good communication."
The league season is still young and both coaches expect it to be a dogfight.
"Any one of the top five teams can win it," said Winn before the match. "The race is wide open." Los Altos won a five-set match over Los Gatos to start the league slate, while the Spartans lost a five-setter to Palo Alto despite 20 kills from Holroyd. "My team felt bad after we lost to Palo Alto," Winn said. "We didn't play well or relaxed. Some of that is on me. I didn't have them ready to play the big teams. They're understanding what it takes to play a really good team. You have to have that energy." "It's going to be a battle," Kim said. "No one is going to go undefeated or with one loss. Three or four losses and a league champion is, probably, going to happen." Los Altos setter Sarah Callan had 34 assists, while teammate Kaitlyn Wong had eight digs. "I have a lot of young, inexperienced players," Kim said. "We're not rebuilding, we're reloading everything."

MaxPreps once again is proud to showcase the best high school volleyball players in California. Teams are divided up by enrollment division, with a Player of the Year for each classification. The Coach of the Year is Tommy Chaffins of Redondo Union. The 2015 Sea Hawks were far different looking than the dominant 2014 team, as Chaffins had four key players to replace, a challenging schedule and a lineup shorter than most in California's competitive Southern Section. The 2014 Sea Hawks dominated from start to finish in winning their final 27 games and the state D-I title. Redondo won 39 of 41 matches and went 9-0 in the playoffs with a 27-7 set match differential. They lost just 18 sets all season. In 2015, Chaffins built his team around two key returnees in seniors Norene Iosia and Megan Rice. He also had the tradition he's built in his dozen seasons as head coach, which includes a 317-78 won-loss record in the last 10 seasons. Despite two late-season heartbreaking losses (including its first league loss since 2011), Chaffins kept his team focused, leading the Sea Hawks to their second-straight Division I state title and a 37-4 record. Chaffins also earned CIF-SS D-1AA Coach of the Year honors. "I'm not sure how many teams have won a D-1 state title with a 5-6 outside hitter and a 5-8 opposite side hitter. But our team was resilient," said Chaffins. He said there were a few surprises along the way. "We had a great bench that pushed the starters every day, and our team played really smart and was usually very low error. In the end, our experience along with the girls' high volleyball I.Q. won out," said Chaffins. "Of course, having superstars Megan Rice and Norene Iosia were the biggest two factors." Though they lost their last league game (3-2 to Mira Costa), then fell to rival Mater Dei in the Southern Section D-1AA title match, the Sea Hawks reached the Southern California Regional Tournament as a No. 4 seed. Not deterred by rankings, they upset Torrey Pines in San Diego, at that time the No. 1-ranked team in the state. The Sea Hawks then beat Huntington Beach and Northern California champion Menlo-Atherton to repeat as champions. Behind the play of Rice, who had a match-high 22 kills, and Iosia, who had 36 assists and four service aces, Redondo dominated Menlo-Atherton (25-16, 25-18, 25-16). Chaffins even started a freshman – 6-foot middle Kyla Doig – in a conference were few freshmen see anything but junior varsity playing time. Iosia, who was a finalist for MaxPreps National Player of the Year, is MaxPreps' California D-I Player of the Year. And Rice is a D-I all-state selection. They shared the Daily Breeze 2015 Volleyball Player of the Year honor. MaxPreps 2015 California All-State Volleyball Teams

The local high school volleyball teams have the long Thanksgiving weekend off – and they’re not happy about it. The Los Altos, Mountain View and St. Francis girls saw their stellar seasons come to an end last week in the semifinals of the Central Coast Section playoffs. Only the CCS finalists advance to the Northern California playoffs that begin this weekend. Mountain View and St. Francis lost to higher-seeded teams in the Division II semifinals Nov. 18 at Christopher High in Gilroy. Top-seeded Mitty swept the No. 5 Spartans and second-seeded Presentation defeated No. 3 St. Francis in four sets. Los Altos – which reached the NorCal Division II title match the past two seasons – appeared to have an easier road to the CCS championship this year with the move to Division I; the top-seeded Eagles were able to avoid mighty Mitty, which beat them in the CCS and NorCal finals both years. ... Mountain View coach Dave Winn hopes his team will continue its upward trajectory next season. “We took a huge step this year,” he said. “The kids are buying in.” The Spartans finished third in the De Anza at 9-3 and went 31-6 overall – tying the school record for the most wins in a season – a year after going 5-7 in league and 19-13 overall. This year’s trip to the CCS semifinals was their first in seven seasons.
“We should be really proud of what we accomplished,” said Winn, who took over the team last year. “But it’s hard to feel that way on the bus ride home (from the semis), because they just want to win.”
Knocking off defending state champ Mitty, ranked fifth nationally, proved too tall of a task. The Monarchs won 25-14, 25-19, 25-21.
“I wasn’t that surprised,” Winn said of the outcome. “I’m just a little disappointed that we didn’t bring our best game. But we got better as the match went along.”
Mountain View struggled serving, missing 13 over the three sets.
“Our serving let us down,” Winn said.
Outside hitter Chanti Holroyd paced the Spartans with nine kills and middle blocker Emma Blockhus, also a senior, added six. Both players will be hard to replace, according to Winn, who lobbied for Holroyd as league MVP.
Sophomore right-side hitter Eleonore Johansen, who registered seven kills against Mitty, is the sole starter returning next season.

Mountain View closed the gap to 13-12 behind the play of Chanti Holroyd. The senior contributed three of her match-high 21 kills during the Spartans’ surge.
Alexis Malgesini countered for the Eagles with a deep kill, then a cross-court spike after her team’s service error. The two-point lead ballooned to 20-15 on an ace by Mumm, who capped the set with a kill.
Los Altos (16-5 overall) seemed on its way to a sweep, jumping to a 7-2 advantage in the third set after Megan Wilhelm – effective moving from opposite hitter to libero Thursday – served back-to-back aces.
Mountain View (22-3) wasn’t having it. The Spartans scored six of the next seven points, tying the set on a block by Emma Blockhus. The 6-foot-1 senior finished with four blocks and 14 kills.
“Emma was the star – she played heroically tonight,” Winn said. “She and Chanti were fantastic.”

Archbishop Mitty took a significant step forward in its quest to win another West Catholic Athletic League girls volleyball championship, beating Valley Christian and St. Francis last week to stay unbeaten one-third of the way through a six-match league season. But in the area’s second-best volleyball league, the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League’s De Anza Division, three teams begin this week with only one league loss and two of them (Mountain View and Los Altos) meet Thursday night. Mountain View swept Los Altos at home last month, two days after losing in five sets to Palo Alto. Los Altos swept Palo Alto on Sept. 29, five days after losing to Mountain View. The three teams have one more round against each other, beginning with Mountain View’s visit to Los Altos on Thursday. (Palo Alto still has two matches against Los Gatos, which has two league losses). “Cross-town rivals, playing for first place, it’s pretty big,” Los Altos coach Peter Kim said. Asked what it’s going to take to win, Kim said. “Honestly, bring a lot of energy into the match. They brought a lot of energy when we played them in our first match at their place — their crowd, the kids, the players. We were kind of overwhelmed with it. “They got on us early, and we really couldn’t recover. I know that we’ll come out with a lot more energy because it is at our place. We’ll have a lot of our fans out there.” Chanti Holroyd, a UCLA sand volleyball commit, leads Mountain View’s attack, averaging 4.2 kills per set while hitting nearly 50 percent. Lulu Kishton averages 4.3 kills per set for Los Altos, taking over the role Carmen Annevelink held last season on her way to being named Mercury News player of the year. Los Altos has lost to Mitty in Central Coast Section and Northern California Division II finals the past two seasons. This season, higher school enrollment has moved Los Altos to Division I, a division that does not include WCAL teams such as Mitty, Presentation or St. Francis. “It will be interesting,” Kim said.

Mountain View is off to a fast start, winning its first two matches in convincing fashion.
The Spartans followed a road sweep of Lynbrook Sept. 8 with a home win over Leland in straight sets Thursday.
Coach Dave Winn said Mountain View overcame “some sloppy play and nerves” to win its opener. He added that “Chanti Holroyd and Moira Huang were excellent at outside hitter,” notching 13 and 11 kills, respectively.
Middle blocker Emma Blockhus contributed five kills and the senior tallied 13 in the rout of Leland. Winn said the 6-foot-1 Blockhus “has been a key contributor on offense and puts up a great block.”
St. Francis ran its record to 8-0 with Friday’s sweep of host Homestead. Mollie Ebertin recorded nine kills for the Lancers.
Los Altos fell to 4-2 on the season with Thursday’s four-game loss to visiting San Benito.
