Yesterday wrapped up a great 3-day BVCA event hosted by the NVL & ROX Beach Series on the deep sand of Hermosa Beach, CA. The event ran from July 8-10 and was situated north of the Hermosa Beach Pier. There were over 450 athletes that traveled not only from all over the country, but from all over the world, including Canada and New Zealand, to play in this great tournament! The BVCA Championships was full of high level beach volleyball and plenty of fun for all. While Hermosa Beach is one of the most iconic and beautiful beaches to play on, it also provides a tough environment for the athletes to battle through including deep sand, HOT sand, and wind. All of the Gold Bracket Championship matches were no stranger to these elements, but the athletes fought hard to overcome them and played some great volleyball to cap off the tournament. The Gold Bracket Championship matches were played on the featured center court with a truly professional environment that included great crowd and a DJ that kept everyone going. Congratulations to the Gold Bracket Champions! The winners for each age division are: 18U Champions - Skylar Caputo and Abril Bustamante from Elite Beach Volleyball Club 16U Champions - Chanti Holroyd and Alyssa Slagerman from Santa Monica Beach Club 14U Champions - Cleston and Blacker from Coast Volleyball Club 12U Champions - Mikayla Gaeta and Makenna Diamond from Santa Monica Beach Club

Richardson, Holroyd are beach champions By Kevin Sparrer, for Silicon Valley Community Newspapers POSTED: 08/26/2013 07:38:49 PM PDT | UPDATED: 25 DAYS AGO It's team volleyball competition, but Shannon Richardson of Los Gatos and Chanti Holroyd of Mountain View travel without any other team members when they compete on the beach volleyball circuit--because all they need is each other. The two 15-year-old girls spent much of their summer in Los Angeles competing in various beach volleyball events that are normally held all over the country, but ended up all in the LA area this year. The two girls took the gold medal in their first international competition, an under-16 event held in the Southland. Their most difficult match came against a pair from Puerto Rico. "The girls had a lot of fun playing them," wrote Richardson's father, Brian, in an email. "It was a little harder to play them because they used Spanish to communicate what they were going to do with the ball." "Usually communication by the opposing team gives you an idea of what is coming," he added. "Chanti was a little more prepared than Shannon in that she takes Spanish in school. Shannon takes Japanese so she was out of luck on the language issue." Richardson is just beginning her sophomore year at Harker School, where she is playing her second season on the girls varsity volleyball team. She also plays indoor volleyball for the City Beach Volleyball Club in Santa Clara. Holroyd is also going to be a sophomore, and she's about to begin her second season on the girls varsity volleyball squad at Mountain View High. She plays indoor volleyball for the Red Rock Volleyball Club in Redwood City.

Spartans use balanced attack to topple Titans
By john reid Daily News Staff Writer Posted: 10/23/2012 11:23:20 PM PDT Updated: 10/23/2012 11:23:20 PM PDT
Mountain View had revenge on its mind when Gunn-Palo Alto trekked to Chester F. Awalt Gymnasium for a Santa Clara Valley Athletic League volleyball match on Tuesday evening. Revenge it was for the Spartans, who toppled the Titans 25-17, 22-25, 25-11, 25-19 in a De Anza Division match. The Titans had defeated the Spartans 3-1 at Gunn on Oct. 2. "We were ready this time," Mountain View coach M. Anthony "MAC" Chen said. "We came out more aggressive, had better passing control, which let us dictate tempo." "We had a lot of service errors that hurt us the last time we played them," Spartans outside hitter Becky Slattery said. "We made too many mistakes. We had a lot of good energy this time and we played together." The Spartans (13-12, 5-6 De Anza) and Titans (11-13, 3-8 De Anza) have one thing in common in that they are both trying to qualify for the Central Coast Section playoffs -- the Titans in Div. I, the Spartans in Div. II. Both teams are in Milpitas Spikefest II on Saturday hoping to rack up some wins to get to .500 or better overall. Each team has three De Anza matches remaining. "Playing in the De Anza makes it tough to win," Gunn coach Kevin Hwang said. "There are no nights off." The score was tied 5-5 in each of the first three sets as the two teams traded blows throughout. Trailing 6-4 in Game 4, Gunn's Lena Latour powered down a kill from the back row for one of her 10 kills. A tap by Becky Slattery and Advertisement a kill by freshman Chanti Holroyd put the Spartans up 9-5. Mountain View's savvy setter Megan Robinson set Slattery for a kill. Maegan Newalsky then delivered an ace for 11-5, prompting Hwang to call time out. Robinson, who had 44 assists, got a dump to go for 14-9 Spartans. Merima Hamzic made it 17-11, but Latour responded with a kill. Robinson set Hayley Sturgeon for one of her 13 kills. Gunn setter Nitika Johri back set Meghan Mahoney for a kill and the Titans were within four points. And when Johri served an ace, Chen stopped play with a timeout, the Spartans ahead 19-17. Robinson set Slattery for one of her 13 kills. Holroyd, who had a match-high 15 kills, had a winner over a Gunn block. The match ended on a deep tap by Sturgeon that found a hole in the back row. The Spartans led 11-8 in Game 2 on a kill by Holroyd. Gunn's Elsie Griffin had a kill, then Latour found a hole in the middle of the Spartans' defense. Griffin and Latour combined for a block, the Titans trailing 12-11. Erica Johnston tapped down a freeball and the Titans took a 16-15 lead. The leaping Johnston had eight kills and 10 digs, while adding a needed spark. Gunn led 21-20 when it appeared the Spartans were going to catch a break and get a critical point on a Sturgeon kill. In the midst of a rally, Holroyd hit a ball outside the antennae that wasn't seen by the down ref. Hwang, the Titans' bench and Gunn fans in the stands immediately protested. After a discussion, the call was reversed by the up ref and correctly so. Donna Jacobson, who had six kills, got a kill to go and it was game-point Titans. Johnston let one rip and Gunn had evened the match at a game apiece. Holroyd led a late serving run in Game 3, closing it out with back-to-back aces. Holroyd took to the service line with the score 18-11, then proceeded to reel off seven straight points. "Holroyd is a real special freshman," Hwang said. "She's a complete player." "I'm pleased with the way Chanti is playing," Chen said. "She's working hard and is becoming a smarter player. Last time, Gunn did a good job of blocking her, but she adjusted for this game." And the Spartans got their revenge. Email John Reid at jreid@dailynewsgroup.com; follow him at twitter.com/dailynewsjohn.

Paly turns it on to defeat Mountain View
By john reid Daily News Staff Writer Posted: 09/28/2012 12:11:44 AM PDT Updated: 09/28/2012 12:11:44 AM PDT
Palo Alto senior Shelby Knowles is a do-it-all type volleyball player. Knowles certainly did it all in the Vikings' 19-25, 25-17, 25-17, 25-14 victory over host Mountain View on Thursday evening. The Vikings (15-3, 4-0 league) stayed unbeaten in Santa Clara Valley Athletic League De Anza Division play. Knowles took the service line late in Game 4 after she found a hole in the Mountain View defense for one of her match-high 22 kills. Knowles served three straight jump-serve aces for match-point. Sophia Bono and Lauren Kerr combined for a block to end the match. "I was just trying to put the ball in play," said Knowles of her three-ace run. Paly coach Dave Winn moved Knowles to outside hitter this year and she's delivering the goods. "The past three years, Knowles has been a defensive specialist or our libero," Winn said. "If I could have her pass, set and hit to herself, that's how skilled she is. When I moved her to outside hitter, she blossomed." The Spartans (8-6, 2-2 SCVAL De Anza) played one of their best sets of the year in Game 1 in front of a boisterous home crowd. Freshman Chanti Holroyd had a kill and a dink for 8-6 Spartans. Paly's Becca Raffel appeared to have a kill, but the call was reversed despite Winn's protests and the Spartans led 11-8. Bella Graves had a kill for Paly off the slide, but Mountain View's Becky Slattery answered with one of her 12 kills for 14-10. The Vikings rallied to get within 15-14 Advertisement on a block at the net by Kerr. Holroyd rose for a "wow factor" kill, the Spartans ahead 16-14. Holroyd had 12 kills, sharing team-high honors with Slattery. Holroyd, who jumps out of the gym, continues to play like one of the best freshmen in the Central Coast Section. "Mountain View has a way of finding good freshmen," Winn said. "Chanti has a lot of good upside. She's a real good beach player, I've heard." Megan Robinson set Slattery for the game-winner. "We were playing consistent volleyball in Game 1," Mountain View coach M. Anthony "Mac" Chen said. "All facets of our game was spot-on. Paly adjusted to our blocking after that. It's Palo Alto, so they're a great team." "We were really confident in Game 1," said Mountain View's Hayley Sturgeon, who had six kills. "We got a little too confident and they came back. They wanted it more than us." Keri Gee's serving in run in Game 2 got Paly to a 5-0 lead. Raffel and Graves combined for a block and it was 7-1. A powerful kill from Kerr evened it up in sets. Winn got good play from sophomore outside hitter Jade Schoenberger, who has been emerging as the season has gone on. Schoenberger put down a kill for a 10-6 Paly lead in Game 3. Schoenberger got a dink to go for 13-8. Raffel tapped down a freeball for 21-14, then served an ace and the lead was eight. Mountain View's Merima Hamzic served an ace to get the Spartans within six. Knowles chipped a shot over the net and it got down for 24-17. A four-hit violation on the Spartans and the Vikings had taken control up 2-1 in games. Elyse Fitzsimons had five blocks for the Spartans. "Mountain View came out strong," Knowles said. "We were determined to not make the match go five sets. We pushed really hard in the next three games on defense and blocking." "We weren't that flat in Game 1," Winn said. "We just got outplayed. In this league, any team can beat any other team. We're not dominating the net, so there is a lot of parity. It makes me sweat, but it's a lot of fun." Email John Reid at jreid@dailynewsgroup.com; follow him at twitter.com/dailynewsjohn.

Spartans adjust to life without Howard Written by Andy Drukarev - Special to the Town Crier WEDNESDAY, 19 SEPTEMBER 2012 Photo Elliott Burr/Special To The Town Crier
Mountain View High’s Megan Robinson, right, goes up for a block. New Mountain View High girls volleyball coach M. Anthony Chen had to overcome a major hurdle when he took over the program this season – the loss of Brittany Howard to graduation.
Howard wasn’t only the best player on last year’s team – she was among the best outside hitters in the country. PrepVolleyball.com ranked her the 12th-best senior in the nation. The four-year varsity starter is now on scholarship at Stanford University.
But Chen, who led the Mountain View boys’ squad to a 31-5 record last spring, hasn’t let Howard’s departure dampen his excitement about this year’s team. He isn’t one to dwell on the past.
“Coming in, my responsibility is to work with the talent that we do have and get them to the point that they can play consistent volleyball,” Chen said. “Every year is a little different with team dynamics, so you appreciate the past but always push forward. And I am very excited about the 2012 Spartans team.”
Chen’s optimism has been validated by the team’s solid start to the season.
Despite facing a challenging early-season schedule – highlighted by their participation in the rigorous Spikefest Tournament – the Spartans entered this week 6-4 and on a four-match winning streak.
“We have a good core of returning players, but we also have four sophomores and a freshman on the team,” Chen said. “So the expectation is to work to get a little bit better every day. If we do that in our effort and execution, we should be where we’d like to be at the end of the season.”
Senior captains Becky Slattery (middle blocker) and Hayley Sturgeon (opposite hitter), along with junior Megan Robinson (setter), are among the team’s notable returning players who have helped carry the team thus far.
Chen said Robinson “brings consistency to the offense,” Sturgeon “has been instrumental in gelling this new team together” and Slattery “leads by her example and passionate play on the court. “
In addition, the trio has played a key role in assisting in the development of the team’s younger players.
“They are the key in the learning curve of this team,” Chen said. “Already, I’ve seen tremendous effort made to bring along the younger players.”
Chen singled out sophomore Maegan Nevalsky and freshman Chanti Holroyd as underclassmen who have made an impact.
“Chanti Holroyd is one of the team’s most consistent passers and remains the most pleasant surprise and addition to the team this year,” he said.
Nevalsky is “an up-and-coming outside hitter who has been pretty consistent in her hitting and passing,” he added.
Mountain View was scheduled to open its Santa Clara Valley Athletic League De Anza Division slate Tuesday (after the Town Crier’s press deadline) against rival Los Altos, and Chen anticipated having all but one player available. He noted that senior defensive specialist Bailey Rogers has been bothered by a lower back injury, but she’s expected to return “within the next few weeks.”
The Spartans are set to host Monta Vista 5:30 p.m. Thursday in another league match.

Ranked 17 in the pre-season, Red Rock “a Bye Baby” (California) Only four return from last year’s team, which finished 18th in 15 Open at Nationals. Such a small number usually would make me nervous. But Michelle Brazil, the Branson head coach, takes the reins of this team and I believe in her implicitly. She inherits three big-time talents in OH Kat Claybaugh, All-East Bay MVP; beach star Chanti Holroyd, a strong six-rotation player; and 6-2 RS Grace Roberts-Burbank, Branson’s go-to hitter in the state final. Newcomers include Christine Legasto-Miller, who will likely set a 6-2 with returner Maia So-Holloway; middles Alexis Morrow and Breanna Rajchel, strong OH Carrie Wentzel and athletic libero Isoke Springer.

Volleyball beats Leland, continues to CCS quarter final Posted by Gabe Quintela in Sports, Web Exclusive | 0 Comments Nov 8, 2012 After a 5th place finish in league with a 6-8 record and an overall record of 17-16, the Mountain View Spartans earned the 7th seed in Division II CCS playoffs and the right to play at home. On Wednesday, the Spartans took on the Leland Chargers, who came in as the 10th seed with an overall record of 15-15. Mountain View took a resounding lead in the first set, starting the game with a 7-0 run, led by freshman Chanti Holroyd’s impressive serving. There was no turning back for the Spartans who went on to win the first set 25-13. The second set began with sloppy play by the Spartans, who fell behind early. Yet, Mountain View kept the set close and the team was able to pull away toward the end and win the set 25-22. You could feel the Chargers losing their composure and ceding the game to the Spartans. Finally, in the third set the Spartans took control of the game and didn’t give up the lead for the remainder of the night. Easily winning the third set 25-11, it was obvious who the better team was. The team held a confident attitude after the game and had their minds set on their quarter final game. The Spartans will face the second seed, Presentation High School (21-12) on Saturday at 7. Girls volleyball falls to #1 Palo Alto in four games Posted by Nate Bradford in Sports, Web Exclusive | 0 Comments Sep 29, 2012 Palo Alto 3, Mountain View 1 Hoping to bounce back from their defeat on Tuesday against Los Gatos, the girls volleyball team came into their game Thursday night with one goal in mind: to upset first place Palo Alto. With their 6 footers, Becky Slattery and Hayley Sturgeon, and freshman sensation Chanti Holroyd, the Spartans looked as though they had a good chance of accomplishing this goal. The Spartans started the game off well with Sturgeon rising up and smashing a well set ball by Megan Robinson through the arms of an outstretched Palo Alto blocker and then coming up with a solid block on the next play. As the first game wore on, Palo Alto wouldn’t go away and showed resilience as they stayed within Mountain View until the Spartans were able to go on a 5-0 run after a series of nice plays by Chanti Holroyd which included a sweet angle kill. Shortly after, Becky Slattery finished off the reeling Vikings with a violent hit that ricocheted off of a Palo Alto defensive specialist out of bounds. After switching sides, Mountain View came back onto the court looking to go up 2-0 on Palo Alto, but were unpleasantly surprised by what seemed like a completely different Palo Alto team. “Palo Alto made several key adjustments and we couldn’t counter those adjustments. After a great first game, emotionally we let down a little bit,” said Spartan Coach Mac when asked why MV lost momentum after the first game. The Vikings quickly established a 5-0 lead in the second game and did not let up for the rest of the game. Everything was going right for Palo Alto as Keri Gee made a diving dig which kept the rally alive that resulted in a point for the Vikings, putting them up 12-4. Miscommunication and other small, but critical errors haunted the Spartans for the rest of the game as they were not able to recover from Palo Alto’s quick start and fell 25-17 in Game 2. The Spartans seemed to have worked out their problems from the second game as they hung tight with Palo Alto for most of the first part of the match resulting in a score of 13-10 after a missed hit by a Palo Alto player. Mountain View was not able to hold on for long though as the Vikings went on a 15-7 run immediately following their blunder resulting in another 25-17 Vikings win. As the Spartans took the court down 2-1 there seemed to be little hope left. Palo Alto dominated the fourth and final game with little resistance from a frustrated Mountain View team and took the game 25-14 resulting in a 3-1 Viking victory. After the defeat the Spartans were not too down on themselves and seemed optimistic for the next game stating that they simply had to fix some minor problems. When asked what they needed to improve on, Bailey Rogers stated, “Communicating and hustling to every ball. We keep letting balls drop in the middle of the floor.” After the game, Hayley Sturgeon did not show any signs of giving up. She maintained that the team’s goal is “to make CCS and move up to 3rd place in league.” The Spartans, now 2-2 and 4th place in the Santa Clara Valley League, hope to decrease the margin between themselves and 3rd place Homestead Tuesday when they travel to Palo Alto to face 5th place Gunn.
