Winter Solstice Celebration at Caracol

National Geographic got Joshua Berman's firsthand report of staying overnight on Ca'ana at Caracol, for the Winter solstice, to celebrate the end of the long count Maya calendar.  Dr. Jaime Awe, director of the Belize Institute of Archaeology, was there to explain the history of Caracol.  Here's the video to go with the story that was released a few weeks ago.

"Sleeping under the stars on top of a Maya temple in the middle of one of Central America’s largest tropical forests is the stuff of dreams.  Especially in this day and age, when most major Maya sites are off limits outside daylight hours.  But tonight is different.  Another shooting star!  The forest canopy rustling in the night breeze below sounds like rain, but, amazingly, the December sky is clear.  Sometime around 3:30 a.m., a drum begins to beat.  Maya elders are leading a procession through the trees to perform the solstice ceremony.  I know I should go (I don’t want to miss anything!), but I also don’t want to miss the show above me.  So I remain in my sleeping bag, glued to the sky.  That, after all, is where it all began.  The sky."

Biodiversity in Cayo

Biodiversity in Cayo | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Great article on Cayo with mentions of Mountain Pine Ridge Mayan ruins, Caracol, and even raptors, scarlet macaws, and jaguars.  Some of the pictures featured are from Roni Martinez, Blancaneaux Lodge's conservation officer.

"From Rio Frio Caves, we drive through winding roads toward Caracol, the largest archeological site in Belize, watching the outside scenery dramatically shift from pine ridge habitat to moist, leafy rainforest.  Sitting shotgun, our insightful guide Jorge tells me to keep my eyes peeled for a jaguar or a Tata Duende, the elf-like forest spirit with no thumbs and backwards feet.  Legend has it that this mischievous mythological creature takes small children in the forest where he steals their thumbs.  I'll hold onto my mine . . . for now...

Carcaol's Caana (Sky Place) temple stands at 14 floors.  We climb the massive stone temple with almost obliged reverence (due to the size of the steps) and find at the top sweeping blue skies and a sea of emerald forest.  It's an exhilarating workout."

The Charm of San Ignacio

The Charm of San Ignacio | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

One of the best written articles about Cayo ever.

"Tucked away in a valley between two rivers, San Ignacio is a quaint little town filled with culture and beauty.  It is surrounded by rolling hills and jungle vegetation.  There is a soft stream that runs through downtown, connected by an emblematic old yellow steel bridge.  The central business district consists of small alleyways that showcase its vernacular colonial heritage.  The town is populated by a mosaic of ethnicities that includes Mestizos, Kriols, Lebanese, Chinese, and Amerindian.  San Ignacio’s surrounding area is rich in history.  There are two ancient Mayan sites that are nearly within walking distance.  Cahal Pech, which dates backs to 1200 B.C.E, was a former hilltop palace home for the Mayan elites.  Xunantunich, located less than one mile from the Guatemala border, was a former ceremonial site for the archaic civilization.  Here, you can freely climb to the top of the largest pyramid and enjoy a splendor view of the land.  Also just south of town is the Mountain Pine Ridge, a place of waterfalls, caves, and wildlife.  We drove about two miles directly into it and although it was the most treacherous ride we have ever experienced, it generated a memory that will stay with us for a lifetime."

Black Rock Lodge, ranked as the number 1 hotel in San Ignacio on Trip Advisor, has won their 2013 Traveler's Choice Award for Best Service.  Congratulations, BRL!

"Couldn't ask for a better place for the $$.  Every person was happy, helpful, and relaxed.  Javier went out of his way to be hospitable.  Room decorated with fresh hibiscus blooms.  Romantic!  Seeing the birds n the am a highlight.  Toucans and many other pretty colors with great scopes set up on deck.  Central area for bar and food led to as much or as little interaction with others as you like.  Very close to xunatanich Mayan ruins.  We had our own car and stayed one amazing night and then on to the next adventure.  Not a place you will soon forget!"

Actun Tunichil Muknal Amazes

Actun Tunichil Muknal Amazes | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Actun Tunichil Muknal, which was re-opened to tours many days ago after having been closed for the better part of a week due to heavy rains, has a significant history, which can be read in this article from a student getting a PhD in Archaeology.

"Actun Tunichil Muknal cave, otherwise known as the Cave of the Stone Sepulcher, was first entered by the Mayas in AD 300-600.  It was not until the late AD 700-900 that the Mayas went deeper into the cave to perform their ceremonies.  The cave was officially opened to the public in 1998.  The cave houses various types of artifacts from ceramics and stoneware to the remains of skeletons.  The Mayas consider Actun Tunichil Muknal a highly sacred location, enclosing the famous “Crystal Maiden,” who was thought to be a sacrifice victim.  After decades of weathering and natural processes, the surface of the skeleton appears to be covered with a geological sanded finish, which gives the maiden a somewhat magical fairy-dust appearance."

Congratulations to Twin Palms Bed and Breakfast, for not just being ranked number 1 in Cayo, but also for having 127 perfect reviews, and winning the Trip Advisor Travelers' Choice award for Best B&B.

"I was in Belmopan for a few nights for business and Anna and team at Twin Palms made my stay effortless, incredibly comfortable and stress free.  I was upgraded to one of the separate suites that had a kitchenette, it's own wifi and a beautiful spacious bedroom.  Any concern or issue I had was quickly addressed by Anna.  I was even provided with a cell while staying there so I could call a taxi service to take me to and from my meetings.  When I needed to print off documents or order food from the local restaurant Anna was there to help.  Even the cleaning staff that tended to my room daily were lovely.  I can honestly not recommend this bed & breakfast enough.  If I ever return to Belmopan I will definitely be staying at Twin Palms.  Thank you so much Anna and Tim for your amazing hospitality"

"Staying at Moonracer was a fun and unique experience!  It was like camping only way better!  The cabin we stayed in had a screened in porch with a hammock, perfect for hanging out and listening to the jungle wildlife.  Tom and Marge were outstanding hosts.  We enjoyed the dinners in the palapa and talking about our adventures with them.  Marge is an excellent cook and made sure when we went out hiking or visiting temples, we had a superb lunch packed in a cooler.  Everything was provided to make our stay enjoyable; flashlights, swim towels, etc.  Tom and Marge also suggested some excellent tours which we really enjoyed.  If you're looking for a unique experience, Moonracer is definitely a must! 10 Cool Things You Didn’t Know About the Cotton Tree

10 Cool Things You Didn’t Know About the Cotton Tree | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

The Ceiba Tree gets some appreciation.  In Mayan lore, the huge trees roots bore down to Xibalba, and the branches reach up to the heavens.

"The silky fibers that disperse the seeds are too small for weaving but make great stuffing for bedding and life preservers.  Soaps can be made from the oils in the seeds...  The bark decoction has been used as a diuretic, aphrodisiac, and to treat headache, as well as type II diabetes.  It is also used as an additive to some versions of the hallucinogenic drink Ayahuasca...  The flowers of the tree are an important source of nectar and pollen for honeybees."
