Epic Belizean Inland Adventures

Epic Belizean Inland Adventures | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Cayo gets some more publicity with 3 extreme inland adventures.  Ultralight flights, cave tubing - misspelled as cave tumbling - and jungle horseback riding are the main focus.  Xunantunich and Chaa Creek get mentioned in the article too.

"One of the most spectacular & accessible Mayan ruins in Belize is Xunantunich.  This architectural wonder is set on a leveled hilltop and is reached by crossing the Mopan River on a hand-cranked ferry.  The ruins are impressive when viewed from the ground but the sheer size and magnificence is not fully comprehended until seen from the sky.  A bird’s eye view from a gliding ultralight is the best way to fully experience the wonder of the ancient Mayan Civilizations.  There’s nothing like reaching a height of 3,000 feet when the pilot turns off the engine, and one gently glides over the ruins in absolute silence."

The Institute of Archaeology has quite a few great pictures up from Xunantunich's new ferry inauguration.

"Today history, culture and tourism all came together in the opening of the new ferry.  Tourism stakeholders, NICH, The Institute of Archaeology, BTB, STP and the ferry's engineers all came together for the maiden voyage."

Great Mayan Ruins by San Ignacio, Belize: Xunantunich

Great Mayan Ruins by San Ignacio, Belize: Xunantunich | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

On the topic of Xunantunich, and Ka'ana, there are a couple of great new travel reviews about them.  The honeymooners actually tried to walk to Xunantunich from Ka'ana, by the way.  Yes, a cab did save them.  They really enjoyed their guide, and their time in Cayo.

"Let me tell you: This guide was well worth $20.  He knew everything, and was professional, patient, and interesting.  In addition to his knowledge, he also displayed such love and reverence for Xunantunich (despite having led the tour hundreds or even thousands of times) that it inspired us.  Again and again we are impressed by the caliber of the Belizean tourist industry and its people.  Our guide even explained to us about the misinterpretation that had led us to hike along the highway for miles: 'The people told you the ruins were close by because they wanted to make you feel better.'"

Xunantunich Ferry Review

Xunantunich Ferry Review | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Funny news of the day.  It seems like there are some minor design flaws in the new Xunantunich ferry.  4 vehicles can fit on it though.

"So as I was crossing the ferry with a 2012 Toyota High Roof Hi Ace van the lip of the van scratched the ferry and as I made my way into it the butt of the van scratched on the pavement of the hill.  We, me and the other van merely crossed the river.  On the other side is also another matter I directed the other van to move first and he did.  As it was moving off the back tires pushed the ferry away form the bank. the ferry man cranked it back to the edge and I was then given the go ahead to cross."

The new ferry for Xunantunich had its inauguration today!  Danny Chung was there to get some great pictures along with the crew from the SIRH.  Dr. Jaime Awe was there to help crank it across too.  Looks like they had a fun celebration.

Belize Memorabilia Video from 1975

Belize Memorabilia Video from 1975 | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Xunantunich long before the hand cranked ferry!  That skiff doesn't look like it can hold that many people.  Many Cayo sites can be seen in this classic 1975 video that the Benque House of Culture posted.  Central Farm, Spanish Lookout, Belmopan, and Xunantunich, before the serious excavation, are all on there.  Cayo starts just after the 3 minute mark.
