Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture

The 2nd Bio-Barrier has been installed, this one being placed on the Mopan river at Garbutt Falls in Benque.  The bio-barrier helps to catch trash, and is made of recycled plastic bottles.  Thanks, Rotary, and everyone that helped with this amazing initiative!

"Last Sunday March 8, 2020, our club installed a second bio-barrier on the Mopan River. This will greatly help to trap floating solid plastic from continuing its way down into town. This barrier will help us identify Benque Viejo's waste and to be more conscious about the importance of clean Waters...

It takes a great deal of work to make the barrier and install it. It will trap floating trash and debris which will then be bagged and removed from the river. Thank you to the Club members, the Rotaract Club of Benque and other community groups and members who are making this clean-up effort so effective!"

Millennium Radio is having an Expo and Toy Drive on Saturday, November 16th, at the Cancha Marshelleck.  They have quite a lineup scheduled for the day.

Santa sighting of the day.  Santa paid a visit to the kids in Benque.  He and Mrs. Claus passed out sweets and gifts.  The DYS was there to get some great pictures.  Thanks, Love Foundation!

Feelgood news of the day.  The Benque branch of the DYS teamed up with Alvin Young high school to clean up and refurbish a Succutz park.  Thanks, DYS!  

"The Department of Youth Services Benque Viejo in collaboration with Alvin Young Nazarene High School conducted its National Service Day clean up campaign at one of the parks in San Jose Succotz where we refurbish the swings, clean and cut the grass, and painted the benches. We would like to thank Benque Hardware for their kind donation of materials for the swing."

The Beyond the Horizon medical clinic will be at Macal River Park from Monday, May 8th, to Tuesday, May 16th.  They'll be providing services for vision, dental, pediatrics, and gynecology. 

"Free medical service being provided by the U.S Army from May 8th - 16th 2017 at the Macal Park in San Ignacio.  Date for Benque Viejo and San Jose Succotz is Saturday May 13th 2017. Take advantage and share the information."

The 2017 Culture of Peace was last week.  This year, it was held at Arenal.

"Yesterday at Arenal Village presentations from kids, Benque Marimba Youth Academy “Los Hijos del West”, House of Culture Benque Viejo and Melchor and OAS AZ in the form of cultural dances and exhibition of their paintings and talent to OAS officials, Ambassador of Belize, and European Union officials."

Feelgood news of the day.  The Rotaract Club of Benque had another successful Fill A Backpack drive, this was their 3rd, and they distributed 25 backpacks last weekend.  Thanks, Rotaract! 

"On Sunday, August 28th, 2016 Rotaract Club of Benque Viejo deliver 25 bags with school supplies to primary school students from San Jose Succotz and Benque Vijeo.  Selection was done based on family' s financial need. "

The Rotaract Club of Benque is having their 3rd annual Fill A Backpack school supply drive.  If you can help them out, call them at 621-5969.

"Donations are welcome towards our 3rd Annual Fill-a-Backpack project.  It will be distributed for San Jose Succotz and Benque Viejo primary school students.  Send us a message, or contact any Rotaractor from our club."

UPDATE - Postponed due to weather.  Will be later this month.

The Benque Rotary are inviting everyone out on Saturday and Sunday, from 7am to 6pm, to help create the first Ecological Mural in Belize. It'll be made out of plastic caps.

'You are cordially Invited!  The Rotary Satellite Club of San Ignacio Benque Viejo invites you to participate in the first Ecological Art wall project with the use of plastic caps.  Creating awareness from the example and creativity of actions in favor of the planet is the movement.'

The Biobarda has been installed on the Mopan in Benque, and it's working well.  They've already cleaned it, and they got quite a bit of trash out of it.  A huge thanks to everyone involved with this amazing effort.  Beta No Litta!

"The Rotary Satellite Club of San Ignacio Benque Viejo with the guidance from Guatemala’s Ministry of Environment and Natural resources, Todos por un Mundo Verde 'FCD EYG' sister organization in Guatemala and with the support of Mayor of Benque Mr. Marconi Sosa, Friends for Conservation & Development, FCD Environmental Youth Group, Bowen & Bowen, friends of Rotary and the community of Benque and friends across Belize. The first bio-barrier better known in Guatemala as “Biobardas” has been successful installed in in Belize in the Community of Benque del Carmen Town. This is just one of the many that will be installed in the various communities across Belize."

Saint Martin's Credit Union had their inaugural celebration for their new branch in Benque Viejo.  The National Channel captured it all on video.  The Benque Marimba Youth Academy performed, and played the national anthem.  Credit unions are the way to invest, as they help the community.

The Rotaract Club of Benque is having a Cancer Walk and a Cancer Run, next Sunday, October 15th.

Feelgood news of the day.  The Rotaract Club of Benque distributed their Christmas gift baskets in Benque and Succotz, and the Rotaract Club of San Ignacio distributed gift baskets in San Marcos.

"On our 3rd Annual Food Drive . Once again the Rotaract club of Benque Viejo distributed gift baskets to our lovely people form Benque and San Jose Succutz.  Thanks to all for thier full support. Giving smiles and happiness to our kind and loving people.

Today, the Rotaract Club of San Ignacio went to bring Christmas to the Village of San Marcos in the Cayo District. The club distributed Christmas lunch and food baskets to all the families in the village and all the children received toys! The Navidad del Nino project is proudly sponsored by Unicomer-Courts Belize." 

Benque Viejo is having their 2016 Summer Camp at Sam's Community Park next week, from the 8th to the 12th of August.  They'll have food and fun in large amounts.  Thanks, Cayo District Youth Council!
