This Peruvian bilingual blog (English/Spanish) is a great resource. It contains many video interviews (transcribed and translated, kudos for the effort) with a wide range of curanderos of the jungle and the Andes
Richard Saunder is an American living in Ecuador that has experienced the dark side of shamanism. He is currently in a legal battle to expose the shaman that almost killed him, and is asking for support from the shamanic community.
It's a foul-tasting, vomit-inducing concoction but it's got thousands queuing to try it. Ayahuasca is an hallucinogenic cocktail made from jungle vines and everyone is trekking deep into the Amazon to test its supposedly magic properties.
Tardigrades or "Water Bears" are the only creatures that can survive the extreme conditions in the vacuum of outer space. Watch the comments response video h...
I am currently about half-way through a nine-week dieta with the legendary Amazonian tree Noiya Rao, also known in Spanish as Palo Volador (the flying tree). The seventy-seven year old Shipibo Maest...
Tyrone Hayes, a biologist at the University of California, Berkeley, has devoted the past fifteen years to studying the herbicide atrazine, which is applied to more than half the corn in the country. During that time scientists around the world have expanded on his findings, suggesting that the herbicide is associated with birth defects in humans as well as in animals. Company documents show that while Hayes was studying atrazine, Syngenta, the agribusiness firm which had originally asked him to conduct experiments on the herbicide, was studying him, as he had suspected for years. Syngenta’s notes reveal that the company’s employees struggled for years to make sense of him.
Photographer Swiatoslaw Wojtkowiak did an amazing tour of ayahuasca shamans of Ecuador and Colombia and poured the results into his blog. Beyond the fantastic pictures the site is quite a resource, as it includes all names and contact numbers of each curandero. Highly recommended. He even spells ayahuasqueros correctly! (a personal pet peeve of mine). Apparently there's more to come. Follow him here to stay up to date
On March 14, 2014, in an historic shift in federal policy, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services granted permission for MAPS to purchase research-grade marijuana from the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) for our planned study of marijuana for symptoms of PTSD in U.S. veterans. MAPS has been working for over 22 years to start marijuana drug development research, and this is the first time we’ve been granted permission to purchase marijuana from NIDA, the sole provider of marijuana for federally regulated research in the United States. It took over four and a half months for reviewers at the Public Health Service (PHS) to respond to our October 24, 2013, protocol resubmission. The study still requires final approval from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, and we are optimistic they will approve the study in a timely manner. The study will also require funding support. “When it comes to researching the medical potential of Schedule I drugs,” said MAPS Founder Rick Doblin,“Privately funded medical marijuana drug development research has been the last domino to fall.” The tide has turned for medical marijuana research, and we look forward to starting the study. After watching an episode of the Joe Rogan experience she went to Peru to have her first Ayahuasca experience, despite her father trying to stop her at the airport.
When her 'trip' was over she decided to give up her life long ambition of being an actress and decided she should move to the jungle and become the apprentice to a Shaman.
Being illegal, an encounter with ayahuasca is out of reach for many people.
Hamilton Souther says he has a way around all that. The Bay Area native and veteran ayahuasca shaman, who spent 12 years in the jungle and has the bonafides from Peruvian masters to show for it, says he has discovered a path to a similar "authentic spiritual experience," with the same benefits and none of the risk.
"What are the problems with these two traps [Wanting to be an Indian and Guilt Seeking Redemption]? First of all, this redemption we find is really a cheap grace. It makes us feel better but doesn’t transform the situation of Native peoples. The injustices keep happening. Secondly, by denying the spiritual and political autonomy of Indian people, the New Age “rainbow” people subvert whatever good intentions they may have about multi-cultural community. What gets created is multi-cultural white middle class dominance in yet another form. Thirdly, these options perpetuate the fantasy image of the Indian, and distort the real picture. They prevent us from seeing the real lives of Native people. They obscure and drown out their voices and expression of self."

In the Amazonian tradition working with planta maestras (teacher plants) is known as the Diet. The working can be seen as a conscious body of actions to incorporate the plant spirit into one’s own consciousness. From this incorporation or union, the plant spirit informs and teaches the maestro or apprentice. They learn the magical chants (icaros) which invoke the power of the plant, how to use the plant for healing purposes, and how to strengthen the dieter both psychologically and physically. The purpose of the diet is to prepare the body and nervous system for the powerful knowledge and expansion of consciousness given by teacher plants.
Low, warm, voiceovers. The obviously forced inclusion of different ethnicities. Sped-up footage of people walking through cities. These are just some of the generic images and graphics that this hilarious video parodies with "This is a generic brand."
A couple of days ago I posted about photographer Swiatoslaw Wojtkowiak's tour of ayahuasca shamans of Ecuador and Colombia. Here are the (somewhat darker) pictures from an earlier trip to the heartland of the Santo Daime: Colonia 5000 & Ceu de Mapiá.

There’s a modern myth that marijuana (cannabis sativa), in its natural form, is effective at both preventing and treating cancer. This myth has become ever more popular with the gradual approval of marijuana…
AN experimental drug made from snail venom has shown early signs of promise in numbing pain, raising hopes in the hunt for new, non-addictive medications, an Australian researcher says.
