Mindfulness Training as an Intervention for Substance User Incarcerated Adolescents: A Pilot Grounded Theory Study

Mindfulness Training as an Intervention for Substance User Incarcerated Adolescents: A Pilot Grounded Theory Study | Ayahuasca News | Scoop.it
Mindfulness-based treatment for adolescents is a clinical and research field still in its infancy. Literature isneeded to address specific subcultural populations toexpand this growing field. Further, minimal literatureaddresses the process of teaching mindfulness to ado-lescents. The current study investigated how to effectively teach mindfulness to 10 incarcerated adolescent substance users (N =10) in an urban California detention setting. A grounded theory approach was used to collect and analyze interview data over a 1-year period during 2011 and 2012 in order to develop an initial theory for teaching mindfulness to incarcerated adolescent substance users. Implications, limitations, andfuture research are discussed

Traditional medicine applied by the Saraguro yachakkuna: a preliminary approach to the use of sacred and psychoactive plant species in Southern Ecuador - Journal of Ethnobiology and Ethnomedicine

Traditional medicine applied by the Saraguro yachakkuna: a preliminary approach to the use of sacred and psychoactive plant species in Southern Ecuador - Journal of Ethnobiology and Ethnomedicine | Ayahuasca News | Scoop.it
During the colonial period, the indigenous saraguros maintained their traditions, knowledge, and practices to restore and preserve the health of their members. Unfortunately, many of their practices and medicinal resources have not been documented. In this study, we sought to document the traditional healers' (yachakkuna saraguros) knowledge about medicinal and psychoactive plants used in the mesas and in magical-religious rituals. The study was conducted under a technical and scientific cooperation agreement between the Universidad Tecnica Particular de Loja (UTPL), the Direccion Provincial de Salud de Loja (DPSL), and the Saraguro Healers Council (Consejo de Sanadores de Saraguro).

Ethnopharmacology and Stress Relief: The Spiritual Experience of Practitioners in the Santo Daime Church

Ethnopharmacology and Stress Relief: The Spiritual Experience of Practitioners in the Santo Daime Church | Ayahuasca News | Scoop.it

The inability to effectively cope with stress brings about numerous physical and psychological disorders. Alternative methods of coping with stress are important toexamine, but there is a lack of awareness and acceptance of non-Western spiritual practices within the general public and mainstream scientific domains. Due to limited research on the ritual use of ayahuasca as part of the means to cope and thrive in daily life, conventional assumptions about its status as an illegal substance negatively alters its interpretation as an effective therapeutic aid. This phenomenological study was an investigation of the spiritual experience of participants of the Santo Daime Church, a syncretic religious group that uses ayahuasca as their sacrament. The purpose of this study was to explore the experience of spiritual guidance to enhance coping strategies and reduce stress.

Length of residence, age and patterns of medicinal plant knowledge and use among women in the urban Amazon - Journal of Ethnobiology and Ethnomedicine

This paper explores patterns of women's medicinal plant knowledge and use in an urban area of the Brazilian Amazon. Specifically, this paper examines the relationship between a woman's age and her use and knowledge of medicinal plants. It also examines whether length of residence in three different areas of the Amazon is correlated with a woman's use and knowledge of medicinal plants. Two of the areas where respondents may have resided, the jungle/seringal and farms/colonias, are classified as rural. The third area (which all of the respondents resided in) was urban.
