Ayahuasca, a psychotropic beverage used by numerous indigenous groups of the Upper Amazon, the Orinoco Basin and the Pacific Lowlands of Colombia and Ecuador, has an important role in their medico-religious, artistic and social lives. Its use was later incorporated in healing ceremonies among the mestizo population of Peru, Ecuador and Colombia. This chapter presents an overview of such uses among some indigenous groups as well as that of contemporary practitioners in the Peruvian Amazon region.
Before we review the steps you can take to give yourself the best chance of having a safe Ayahuasca ceremony, we should understand that until very recently...
Helping Raise Consciousness one Soul at a time. Our mission is to help you awaken to the truth of your being. Combining sacred medicine with ancient wisdom and modern progressive psychology, we support you through your Ayahuasca experience and help you connect to your own intuitive healer. Healing Through Consciousness In shamanism, all dis-ease arises from conflict between the shadow and conscious self creating imbalance and blockages in the psyche. Ayahuasca and other plant medicines bring the shadow to the surface, where it can be examined and integrated consciously. Not A Recreational Experience Growth means moving beyond your comfort zone, and this experience is inherently uncomfortable. Ayahuasca sets a challenging pace for our growth as we undo entrenched patterns, and one needs to be ready to personally engage in the healing process. We can promise only one thing: It won't be easy, it will be worth it.
The tree of life is one of the most important organizing principles in biology1. Gene surveys suggest the existence of an enormous number of branches2, but even an approximation of the full scale of the tree has remained elusive. Recent depictions of the tree of life have focused either on the nature of deep evolutionary relationships3,4,5 or on the known, well-classified diversity of life with an emphasis on eukaryotes6. These approaches overlook the dramatic change in our understanding of life's diversity resulting from genomic sampling of previously unexamined environments. New methods to generate genome sequences illuminate the identity of organisms and their metabolic capacities, placing them in community and ecosystem contexts7,8. Here, we use new genomic data from over 1,000 uncultivated and little known organisms, together with published sequences, to infer a dramatically expanded version of the tree of life, with Bacteria, Archaea and Eukarya included.
Our brains, with their intrinsic tendency to segregate, are designed to veer toward over-control. Psychedelics blow all that apart – and we can learn from them
For the people who have invested so much hope in this week’s UN General Assembly Special Session (UNGASS) on drugs, the official agreement it produced – the “outcome document” – represents a shocking betrayal. The UNGASS was called by three Latin American member states – Colombia, Mexico, and Guatemala – who have arguably paid the highest price for the failure of the global war on drugs. They carried the concerns of millions of people, civil society organisations and other members states around the world when they called on the UN to critically evaluate the prohibitionist drug policies that have been in force for more than half a century now – and explore alternatives including decriminalisation and legal regulation of drug markets. For them, enough was enough.

The induction of synaesthesia in non-synaesthetes has the potential to illuminate the mechanisms thatcontribute to the development of this condition and the shaping of its phenomenology. Previous researchsuggests that lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) reliably induces synaesthesia-like experiences in non-synaesthetes. However, these studies suffer from a number of methodological limitations including lackof a placebo control and the absence of rigorous measures used to test established criteria for genuinesynaesthesia. Here we report a pilot study that aimed to circumvent these limitations. We conducted awithin-groups placebo-controlled investigation of the impact of LSD on colour experiences in response tostandardized graphemes and sounds and the consistency and specificity of grapheme- and sound-colourassociations. Participants reported more spontaneous synaesthesia-like experiences under LSD, relativeto placebo, but did not differ across conditions in colour experiences in response to inducers, consistencyof stimulus-colour associations, or in inducer specificity. Further analyses suggest that individual dif-ferences in a number of these effects were associated with the propensity to experience states of ab-sorption in one's daily life. Although preliminary, the present study suggests that LSD-induced sy-naesthesia-like experiences do not exhibit consistency or inducer-specificity and thus do not meet twowidely established criteria for genuine synaesthesia

Lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) is a non-selective serotonin-receptor agonist that was first synthesized in 1938 and identified as (potently) psychoactive in 1943. Psychedelics have been used by indigenous cultures for millennia [ 1 ]; however, because of LSD’s unique potency and the timing of its discovery (coinciding with a period of major discovery in psychopharmacology), it is generally regarded as the quintessential contemporary psychedelic [ 2 ]. LSD has profound modulatory effects on consciousness and was used extensively in psychological research and psychiatric practice in the 1950s and 1960s [ 3 ]. In spite of this, however, there have been no modern human imaging studies of its acute effects on the brain. Here we studied the effects of LSD on intrinsic functional connectivity within the human brain using fMRI. High-level association cortices (partially overlapping with the default-mode, salience, and frontoparietal attention networks) and the thalamus showed increased global connectivity under the drug. The cortical areas showing increased global connectivity overlapped significantly with a map of serotonin 2A (5-HT2A) receptor densities (the key site of action of psychedelic drugs [ 4 ]). LSD also increased global integration by inflating the level of communication between normally distinct brain networks. The increase in global connectivity observed under LSD correlated with subjective reports of “ego dissolution.” The present results provide the first evidence that LSD selectively expands global connectivity in the brain, compromising the brain’s modular and “rich-club” organization and, simultaneously, the perceptual boundaries between the self and the environment.
Users of the powerful naturally occurring tryptamine 5-MeO-DMT frequently report that they are briefly dissolved into IT, pure being-nothing, the energetic void, infinite love, or as many simply say, the Light. Obviously this Light is not an 'object' in the ordinary sense, and users invariably stress its ineffable character. In this talk Sebastian will be considering how we might think about this Light and its socio-cultural significance.
BIO: Sebastian Job, PhD, is Honorary Associate in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Sydney and Visiting Lecturer at the National Institute of Dramatic Art. His research in recent years has centred on the entheogenic uses of psychoactive substances both in Australia and Latin America, with a particular interest in the environmental, political and philosophical significance of the cultures of use of these substances.
From Shock to Awe is a feature-length documentary that will chronicle the journeys of military veterans as they seek relief from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder with the help of ayahuasca, MDMA (“Ecstasy”), and cannabis. It will be an intimate look at how these substances can be used to heal our wounded warriors—and, by extension, their loved ones.

On a ranch outside Sedona, Arizona on October 8th, 2009, more than 50 followers of self-help guru James Arthur Ray approached the conclusion of a five-day "Spiritual Warrior" seminar they paid $10,000 or more to attend. Ray had already asked attendees to shave their heads, and meditate without food or water in the desert for days. For the seminar’s finale, they were asked to participate in a sweat lodge ceremony. Every participant would be ushered into a makeshift dome and encouraged to endure crowded, moisture-soaked, circulation-free extreme heat while Ray sat next to the dome’s only entrance. The ceremony did not go well. By nightfall, people were hallucinating and screaming for help in the middle of the desert. A first responder who arrived at the scene described it as looking like a mass suicide. Three people eventually died from heatstroke, and 18 others were hospitalized.
