Ignacio's Legacy

Brian Moser and anthropologists Stephen & Christine Hugh-Jones go back to the indigenous communities they visited in the 1960s to show the different ‘Pira’ films in key Tukano/Barasana communities and return various audio visual materials.  Although very much shot 'on the fly’ this film covers the journey and peoples' reactions to the audio visual materials, whilst at the same time seeking to show changes to their lives over the last 50 or so years.  It’s a positive story and linked not just to the resilience of these communities, but also some of the macro policies implemented by the Colombian government and accompanying support from external organisations in the realisation of these policies

Murray Hill Center Wants To Help You Process Your Psychedelic Trip

A therapy center for helping people process their experimentations with psychedelic drugs just opened up in Murray Hill.

The Center for Optimal Living — the group behind the project — actually started its program back in September 2015, running "psychedelic integration groups" at the New School. But now the center has moved into a new set of offices at 41st Street and Lexington Avenue, where it hopes to create a kind of "community center" for people who have used psychedelics.

Noted anthropologist, student of the “dark side,” dies

Neil L. Whitehead, a professor of anthropology at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, died Thursday, March 22 in Madison following a bout with illness.

Whitehead was known for his studies of the Amazon basin and Caribbean, and in particular his exploration of violence, warfare and what he called “dark shamanism.”

Whitehead studied the human propensity to violence through the lens of ethnography, and conducted groundbreaking studies of kanaimas. Men he called “dark shamans” in Guyana stalked their victims and inflicted a gory death.

Medicine, religion and ayahuasca in Catalonia. Considering ayahuasca networks from a medical anthropology perspective

Medicine, religion and ayahuasca in Catalonia. Considering ayahuasca networks from a medical anthropology perspective | Ayahuasca News | Scoop.it
Ayahuasca is a psychoactive beverage from the Amazon, traditionally used by indigenous and mestizo populations in the region. Widespread international use of the beverage began in the 1990s in both secular contexts and religious/spiritual networks. This article offers an analysis of these networks as health care systems in general and for the case of Spain and specifically Catalonia, describing the emergence and characteristics of their groups, and the therapeutic itineraries of some participants. The medical anthropology perspective we take enables us to reflect on the relationship between medicine and religion, and problematize the tensions between medicalization and medical pluralism. Closely linked to the process of medicalization, we also analyze prohibitionist drug policies and their tensions and conflicts with the use of ayahuasca in ritual and ‘health care’ contexts. The paper ends with a reflection on the problem of ayahuasca as ‘medicine’, since the connection between religion and medicine is a very difficult one to separate.

Free webinar! Winning the Right to Religious Ayahuasca Use: Lessons From the UDV’s Historic Success in the US.

Free webinar! Winning the Right to Religious Ayahuasca Use: Lessons From the UDV’s Historic Success in the US.  | Ayahuasca News | Scoop.it
Join us in an exploration of how the international drug control regime is being influenced by ayahuasca globalization. Presenter Jeffrey Bronfman will share with us the lessons learned from the União do Vegetal historic legal success in the USA.

On May 21, 1999 Jeffrey Bronfman answered a loud knock on the door of the offices of the União do Vegetal (UDV) church in Santa Fe, New Mexico. He opened the door to encounter more than a dozen armed US Customs Service and FBI agents with a warrant to seize all the church’s sacramental hoasca tea (ayahuasca) claiming it was contraband and impermissible to possess and distribute under both US and international law. This event initiated a legal action where the small church eventually sued the government of the United States for the return of it’s sacrament and a court order authorizing its religious practice.

The legal action, which occurred over a more than 10 year period, ultimately reaching the Supreme Court of the United States, was fully resolved in the church’s favor. In a truly historic precedent setting decision internationally the UDV ultimately secured its rights through an agreement negotiated with the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) whereby it became a legally registered importer, distributor and manufacturer of an otherwise prohibited substance.

This webinar will include a presentation of the central legal questions that were at issue in the UDV case; the implications of the Supreme Court decision as it relates to international drug control. It will also offer an analysis of the philosophical foundations of the regulatory agreement reached between the UDV and the government, and reflect on how this agreement could perhaps serve as a model in allowing for other sincere, beneficent, responsible uses of ayahuasca.

How to Return to Normal Life After a Crazy Trip

When he got home to Charleston, he realized his perspectives had shifted, but everything he left behind was the same. None of his friends had done ayahuasca and they chalked up his trip to him just being "crazy" as usual. His father was supportive after he explained how desperate he was for a change, but didn't understand the experience. And he couldn't tell his mother, because, he said, "she would have been entirely too consumed with fear and worry."

That's how Arlet found himself one winter evening after his journey knocking on the door of The Oak Barrel Tavern in Charleston before it had opened. He had come to track down the one person he knew of in the city who might understand what he was going through.

The current state of research on ayahuasca: A systematic review of human studies assessing psychiatric symptoms, neuropsychological functioning, an... - PubMed - NCBI | Ayahuasca News | Scoop.it

In recent decades, the use of ayahuasca (AYA) a hallucinogenic botanical preparation traditionally used by Northwestern Amazonian tribes for ritual and therapeutic purposes - has spread from South America to Europe and the USA, raising concerns about its possible toxicity and hopes of its therapeutic potential. Thus, it is important to analyze the acute, subacute, and long-term effects of AYA to assess its safety and toxicity.

The purpose of this study was to conduct a systematic review of human studies assessing AYA effects on psychiatric symptoms, neuropsychological functioning, and neuroimaging.

Holy Hallucinogens: Inside the rituals of a Colorado ayahuasca church

Holy Hallucinogens: Inside the rituals of a Colorado ayahuasca church | Ayahuasca News | Scoop.it
I'm at an unofficial 'church' that meets here regularly. It's like a Christian church in many ways, where people gather, play music and speak about the positive changes everyone can make on the world. It's the same, except these people are going to take ayahuasca, a powerful hallucinogen that's highly illegal here in America.

The higher powers they speak of aren’t cosmic beings, either. To them, these are deities completely accessible. They can be experienced and heard by anyone willing to listen.

“We come here to improve ourselves, to learn from our mistakes and to evolve as people,” says Ryan, one of the participants in the ritual.

Ayahuasca: Why It's a New Age Spiritual Scam

Ayahuasca: Why It's a New Age Spiritual Scam  | Ayahuasca News | Scoop.it

I’m not exaggerating here, aya devotees speak about the drug in the sort of absolutist hyperbole common to religious fundamentalists. Think Christian televangelists only softer, more hippy-like, less fire-and-brimstone and more infinite love. Yes, it’s fairly benign, but there’s a soft fanaticism to it that makes Bruce wary.

Now this is Bruce’s problem with the ayahuasca community: they so desperately want to believe in all this New Age spiritual nonsense, that they have to tell other people loudly and forcefully that yes, this is The Answer, just so they can drown out the sound of their own cognitive dissonance. There’s an unspoken fatwa among ayahuasca drinkers that denounces this sort of critical thinking. It’s very cultish and cults have little time for dissidents.

Reflections on Ayahuasca, Psychedelics, Marijuana and a critical look at the Psychedelic Movement

Reflections on Ayahuasca, Psychedelics, Marijuana and a critical look at the Psychedelic Movement | Ayahuasca News | Scoop.it
In December of 2013 I visited the Peruvian jungle with two of my best friends. Spending time away from modern civilization deep in the rainforest has been healing and beautiful on one hand but also eye-opening and disturbing on the other hand. It’s the fourth time I’ve been to Peru. The last time was in 2007. The ponerization of society has reached even the most remote corners where the virus of “modern progress” has also infected that part of the world. Many people have this romantic view of exotic places like the Amazon and the natives who live there. The issue is not only the pathology of the modern world with its globalization, greed, and capitalism, but that many natives themselves actually want that life style in so many ways. It’s a bit ironic, some of us are trying to escape the modern world and the people living in what we see as “paradise” yearn for what we are trying to get away from. But it’s a clash and doesn’t fit.

After the death of U.S. citizen Leslie Allison in Gualaquiza, Ecuador during an Ayahuasca ceremony this publication contacted the Shaman directly responsible for the ceremony involving approximately 32 participants.
A reporter from LATINAMERICACURRENTEVENTS.COM phoned Miguel Chiriap a well known shaman provider which focuses on providing rituals for tourists from the U.S. and Europe. He initially agreed answer questions via telephone. However, because of poor cell phone service a set of questions were emailed to his office in EcuadorHowever, after questions were submitted (below) he declined to answer any questions based on advice from his attorney.

The Dark Side of Ayahuasca – Part 1 | Jonathan Evatt

The Dark Side of Ayahuasca – Part 1 | Jonathan Evatt | Ayahuasca News | Scoop.it

Increasing numbers of people are turning to ayahuasca for spiritual insight, healing, experiences of non-ordinary reality, and more. Some even consider ayahuasca as the basis of their spiritual path. But is ayahuasca all good? Learning about ayahuasca online, in videos and documentaries, through books, and through the promotional materials of people offering ayahuasca ceremonies one rarely, if ever, sees mention of the many potential issues and down-falls of ayahuasca usage and ceremonies. I’ve had numerous people ask me for my opinion on Aya in recent years, and the feedback I receive is that I share a deeper, broader, and more helpful perspective than what they had heard previously.
