Can you say "bloated?" Westchester-Playa NC has 3x as many members as nearby communities

Can you say "bloated?" Westchester-Playa NC has 3x as many members as nearby communities | 90045 Trending | Scoop.it

"A conversation that began in May about what some members of the Neighborhood Council of Westchester-Playa call “special interest seats” and what to do with them has accelerated in recent weeks due to a new dynamic that has come into play.

Neighborhood council Vice President Mark Redick broached the subject May 16 of eliminating certain board positions that some on the council and some of their constituents believe exist for the sole purpose of catering to a specific entity or organization.

“To some people, (having special interest seats) looks exclusionary, not inclusionary,” he said.

Redick and board member Craig Eggers had anticipated having discussions about what to do with these seats prior to the 2014 neighborhood council elections, which were set to occur next summer. Those elections have now been moved to the spring, shortening the time period to decide whether or not the special interest seats should remain in place before the elections, Redick says.

“This now increases the sense of urgency,” Redick said."

Westchester Residents denounce parking survey, ask LMU to close southern entrance

Westchester Residents denounce parking survey, ask LMU to close southern entrance | 90045 Trending | Scoop.it

LMU met with 90045 residents to discuss creation of a preferential parking district to mitigate neighborhood angst resulting from LMU's new hefty on-campus parking fees.

In ostensible support for creating such a district, LMU presented results of a survey it conducted showing 63% of respondents supporting a one year pilot permit parking district. As pointed out in the comments to the article, however, only a fraction of the affected residents may have responded to the survey.

This is likely to be a sticky situation for Mike Bonin, the City Councilmember representing 90045, as it is the City that ultimately creates and regulates parking districts.

Parking districts are not without their problems. Residents are not guaranteed parking and permits for residents and their guests cost money and require trips dowtown to obtain guest permits.

One solution being floated by affected residents is for LMU to close its South entrance, thereby discouraging students from parking in the surrounding residential neighborhoods.

Top Ten Free Days at LA Museums

Top Ten Free Days at LA Museums | 90045 Trending | Scoop.it

"Filled with incomparable art, priceless learning experiences, and crisp cool air conditioning – who doesn’t love a day at the museum?  They’re a parent’s secret weapon for those hot or “I’m bored” days. But here’s the rub:  they ain’t all cheap.  And who wants to spend $30 to bring your little angel for a day of culture only to have them scream at The Scream, try to touch a Titian or melt before Monet?  It can happen at even the best of kid friendly spots and to even the best of kiddos when you run afoul of naptime, or if the munchies strike.  So we love to test the waters (and mind the wallets) by trying out a museum for the first time on a day when the museum is free."

LAX: Garcetti seeks mostly new leadership on Airport Commission

LAX: Garcetti seeks mostly new leadership on Airport Commission | 90045 Trending | Scoop.it

"Garcetti announced his choices for the Board of Airport Commissioners for Los Angeles World Airports Aug. 14, less than three months after he was elected to office.

The board oversees Los Angeles International Airport as well as Ontario International and Van Nuys airports. Sean Burton, Gabriel Eshaghian, Jackie Goldberg, Bea Hsu, Matthew Johnson and Cynthia Telles are Garcetti’s new appointees, as the mayor looked to make nearly a clean sweep of the commission.

Valeria Velasco, the board vice president and a Playa del Rey resident, was the only commissioner who was retained from former Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa’s administration."

Never Built: Los Angeles at the A+D Museum

Never Built: Los Angeles at the A+D Museum | 90045 Trending | Scoop.it

Showing now at the Architecture + Design Museum through October 13th:

"Never Built: Los Angeles explores the “what if” Los Angeles. A thorough compendium of projects that only saw the drawing board, the exhibition asks: Why is Los Angeles a hotbed of great architects, yet so lacking in urban innovation?

Co-curated by Sam Lubell and Greg Goldin and designed by Clive Wilkinson Architects, the show looks at visionary works that had the greatest potential to reshape the city, from buildings to master plans, parks to follies and transportation proposals any of which could have transformed both the physical reality and the collective perception of the metropolis. The stories surrounding these projects shed light on a reluctant city whose institutions and infrastructure have often undermined inventive, challenging urban schemes."

For information about hours, address and price, go to http://aplusd.org/visit-a-plus-d.

Interestingly, this exhibition was funded in part as a Kickstarter project. See more at http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1371435920/never-built-los-angeles.

Why Virtual Public School is Not Really Homeschool

Why Virtual Public School is Not Really Homeschool | 90045 Trending | Scoop.it

"There has been much debate in homeschool circles over the past couple of years about whether families using virtual programs like K12 or the Connections Academy, offered through the public schools, are truly homeschoolers. Some of these discussions result in hard feelings, and leave many parents asking, "Why can't we all just get along?"

As a homeschooler who works hard to get along with other parents regardless of their educational choices, I don't like to see virtual schoolers offended or feeling left out. Online public school is a great option for many families, but it is important, especially for parents who are leaving conventional public school for the first time, to know all you can about your educational options, and to know where you stand in the eyes of the law."

Exploring the Metro Green Line: From Nowhere to Nowhere and All Points in Between

Exploring the Metro Green Line: From Nowhere to Nowhere and All Points in Between | 90045 Trending | Scoop.it

"

On July 26, 2013 the Metro Gold Line celebrated its tenth birthday, an occasion that did not go unreported by much of the local media, who in some cases described the line as the Metro's "most lovable light rail line" as well as its "most picturesque." August 12 is the 18th birthday of the Metro Green Line, an event that I suspect will likely receive comparatively muted fanfare. The Green Line, when mentioned at all, is most often disparaged as "the train from nowhere to nowhere."

The Green Line was, until recently, the only Metro rail line of which I had not ridden the entire length. When I mentioned my intention to write about it most friends told me that they'd never been on it, and several even asked where it was. For those who are familiar with the Green Line, they likely know it as the rail that doesn't quite reach either the ocean or LAX. If they think about it further, they might realize that it's also the only Metro rail line that doesn't connect to Downtown Los Angeles.

It might come as a surprise then that according to Metro's most recent figures, more people ride the Green Line than the Gold. It's also the fastest of the light rail lines, due to its not intersecting with any streets. Finally, although it doesn't connect to anything that most would consider to be major tourist traps, it does carry commuters not just between home and work, but also to shopping and dining destinations, as well as lesser-known attractions."
