"Medical marijuana dispensaries operating outside the letter of the law beware: Los Angeles City Attorney Michael Feuer has you in his sights.
Since taking office a little more than half a year ago, Feuer has filed misdemeanor charges against operators of 70 cannabis clinics throughout the city, won a court order to keep another from opening in Mar Vista and compelled several Westside dispensaries to shut their doors.
West of the 405, four Venice clinics and one in Mar Vista have shuttered in the past six weeks — a branch of the Farmacy chain on the 1500 block of ultra-hip Abbot Kinney Boulevard, Cal Med Access on Washington Boulevard, Tamer El Shaikhs on Pacific Avenue, California Healing Gardens on Lincoln Boulevard and Venice Compassionate Holistic Therapy on Inglewood Boulevard in Mar Vista.

"A taco stand cook has become a local hero after saving a four-year-old boy from a violent Feb. 26 kidnapping attempt in Westchester.
Jesus Delgado, 35, was enjoying a short break in the parking lot of T2 Tacos at Manchester Avenue and Loyola Boulevard when he heard a cry for help. Rushing out to the sidewalk, Delgado saw a man and woman arguing over two small boys. Then the man grabbed the smaller child and started running east along Manchester.
“I didn’t think twice about it when I saw the man take off with the kid. By instinct, I went and chased after him,” Delgado, a native Spanish speaker, said through a translator.
Delgado caught up a few hundred feet later and wrestled the boy away. High school students standing nearby called 911 and distracted the kidnapping suspect until police arrived."

From our Neighborhood Council website: Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti and the Bureau of Street Services (BSS) recently launched the Bureau’s Neighborhood Council Initiative, also known as “Operation Neighborhood Blitz,” empowering local communities to survey their streets and prioritize the small asphalt repairs (SAR) that make a big difference in the quality of life. The Bureau is partnering local Neighborhood Councils to act as the Bureau’s eyes and ears, or as the Bureau puts it, BSS Honorary Inspectors. The effort will dispatch a city pothole repair truck to every neighborhood in the city twice over the next year.
“I’m working to make sure the city responds to pothole repairs in about 48 hours, but I want to do more than react to your calls,” said Mayor Garcetti. “Government should actively go out to our neighborhoods and work with residents first hand to fix the most pressing problems. The best way to fix problems in our neighborhoods isn’t from an office in City Hall. It’s on the ground in our neighborhoods.”
The Neighborhood Council of Westchester/Playa has been working to gather information on potholes in our community and we need your help. Please forward locations needing repair (pictures can be included) no later than Monday, September 9, 2013 to the attention of the NCWP Governmental Affairs Committee members Mark Redick (Chair) at markredick@gmail.com or Craig Eggers at integritysearch@ca.rr.com.
This is the first of two (2) events. The NCWP will maintain a list of all submissions not repaired for the next event.

"Parents send their children to school with the best of intentions, believing that’s what they need to become productive and happy adults. Many have qualms about how well schools are performing, but the conventional wisdom is that these issues can be resolved with more money, better teachers, more challenging curricula and/or more rigorous tests. But what if the real problem is school itself? The unfortunate fact is that one of our most cherished institutions is, by its very nature, failing our children and our society." A very fascinating (and profoundly sad) read. Click through the photo of the bored kid for the full story. It's a wonder this country still finds any innovation to contribute to our increasingly global economy. What are your thoughts on this article?

"Rise of the Creative Class,” economist Richard Florida argued that the United States had transitioned out of its prior manufacturing -and services-based economies to an economy fueled by innovation.
A certain brand of smart phone may be assembled overseas, but it’s the company’s programmers, designers and its leadership and support staffers in California who reap nearly all of the product’s economic benefits and, in turn, stimulate the local economy as they spend.
If this new “creative economy” has a capital city, Los Angeles is a top contender, a study released this month by the Otis College of Art and Design in Westchester concludes."

"By Gary Walker Just two weeks after getting the apparent blessing of a Neighborhood Council of Westchester-Playa subcommittee, the proposed Legado Del Mar development at 138 Culver Blvd. hit another roadblock on Dec. 3. Failing to reach consensus about the adequacy of concessions offered by real estate firm Legado Co., the council punted the question of whether to support or oppose the development to its Feb. 4 meeting. The mixed-use complex would include 72 apartments, 14,500 square feet of retail space and two levels of underground parking on the undeveloped triangular parcel known to locals as 'Jake’s Lot.'”

"The Promenade at Howard Hughes Center, a prominent mall next to the 405 Freeway, will replace stores with restaurants, arcades and other venues that favor recreation over commerce, its owners said. The mall already has a luxury theater complex. The economic downturn took a toll on the center, however, forcing the closure of a Borders bookstore and Calendar Grill. Another major tenant, Nordstrom Rack, is moving to rival mall Westfield Culver City. The departures "gave us the opportunity to reposition the property," said Howard Wong, director of leasing for owner Passco Cos. "We want to take advantage of what's happening in the market." Bonin, 46, introduced the FIRST-IN Master Plan motion to the City Council in early July in an attempt to tap into local technological resources to upgrade the fire department’s technology. The fire department has an upgrade planned for its 911 dispatch system, will be adding a GPS-based vehicle location system and its contract for the laptop computers used to record patient information also is up for renewal, according to Bonin’s motion." Construction has begun on a new 230-kV underground transmission cable designed to improve power reliability in the communities of Playa del Rey, Westchester, Marina Del Rey, and West Los Angeles. Phase I of the project is expected to progress from Grand Avenue to the intersection of Grand and Vista Del Mar later this week, and then continue north on Vista Del Mar. Commuters are advised to expect delays during construction on Vista Del Mar. The road will be narrowed to one lane in each direction as construction continues along Vista Del Mar from Grand Avenue to Imperial Highway. Once work is completed at the intersection early next week, construction activity will continue through March, and be in progress 24 hours a day, 6 days a week. No construction will occur between 6 a.m. Sundays and 6 a.m. Mondays. Traffic controls including barricades and flag personnel will be in place as needed throughout the construction period. The new Scattergood-Olympic Transmission Cable Project will reinforce and increase the electrical capacity of the existing transmission system, which is nearly 40 years old. The two-year project, which is scheduled for completion by summer 2015, requires constructing a new 11.8 mile high-voltage line from the Scattergood Generating Station in Playa del Rey to the Olympic substation (RS-K) at Centinela Avenue and Olympic Boulevard in West Los Angeles. Work will involve installing conduit in trenches that are 3 feet wide and up to 12 feet deep, along with underground maintenance vaults every 1,500 to 2,500 feet. Additionally there will be improvements to the existing infrastructure connecting the cable at the generating station and the substation. LADWP thanks motorists for their patience. We will continue to inform the community of construction progress and issue traffic advisories as needed throughout the project. For further information, please visit www.ladwp.com/Scattergood-Olympic.
