Constructive Discontent- A Critical Life and Leadership Skill

Constructive Discontent- A Critical Life and Leadership Skill | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Purpose, meaning, contribution are the drivers that build our best selves, best work, best organizations.  Having a keen mind, a positive attitude and the aptitude for disciplined thought, action and resiliency are critical, but they are no longer enough.

===> Accessing purpose, meaning and our ability to contribute in the face of unremitting change, challenges and opportunities demands a whole new focus. <===

A focus that starts with building what I call constructive discontent; a positive, purposeful and a somewhat counterintuitive strength that can be learned.  Finding new ways to optimize potential is critical, this aim was the genesis of my 3Q Edge™ and R-E-A-C-H coaching and training.

shimrit cohen barabi's curator insight, December 4, 2014 10:18 AM

The goal of this article is to explain five fundamental insights that can guide and support educators as they endeavor to integrate student creativity into the everyday curriculum:

1) creativity takes more than originality.

2)There are different levels of creativity.

3)Contaxt matters.

4)Creativity comes at a cost.

5) Theres a time and a place for creativity.

In conclusion,  the ariter saying: "As parents, educators, and creativity researchers, we are encouraged by the increased attention being paid to creativity and the recognition that it has a role to play in schools and classrooms. It's essential, however, that education leaders develop a thorough understanding of creativity and that they take the time and care necessary to ensure that the benefits of creativity are realized in schools and classrooms".

Leadership Means Climbing The Mountain » Just Coach It-The 3Q Edge | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Lead Forward! The call to climb the mountain has never been greater. If you listen, you will hear it.

Leadership is a trek around foggy corners, bluffs and terrain that challenges us beyond our wildest imagination; leading us where most people fear to tread. On good days, we move upward, forward and onward to new challenges, heights and accomplishments.

On bad days, we may slip, fall, lose our balance and tumble backward.  On all days, leadership means learning, re-learning and failing forward with faith, hope, courage, integrity and humanity.

===> It means leading forward. <===

The Five Dimensions of Learning-Agile Leaders - Forbes

The Five Dimensions of Learning-Agile Leaders - Forbes | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

===> To succeed in our volatile, complex, ambiguous world, we have no choice but to master our ability to adapt and learn. <===

Research conducted by Korn/Ferry International from assessment of nearly 1 million executives demonstrates that as we go up the executive ladder, ===> we need to become increasingly comfortable with uncertainty and sudden change. <===

As leaders, we have to have the “integrative capability” to weave together and make sense of apparently unrelated pieces of information and ideas, crafting novel and innovative solutions from them.

At the same time, we need to have the confidence to make decisions on the spot, even in the absence of compelling, complete data.  The qualities needed at the top—openness, authentic listening, adaptability—also indicate that leaders need to be comfortable with and able to embrace the “grayness” that comes from other people’s ideas or situations that arise.

Leading Motivated Learners: Principals Need PD Too

Leading Motivated Learners: Principals Need PD Too | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

As I have started doing preliminary research for my dissertation I have discovered that high quality, relevant and sustainable Professional Development (PD) opportunities for principals (and building leaders in general) are limited. How is that possible?

- Principals are supposed to be visionaries!

- Principals are supposed to be transformational in their leadership!

- Principals are supposed to be responsible for the learning and growth for all those around them!

How can all that be accomplished without proper support through high quality PD?

I'm not 100% certain but what I do know is that upon reflecting on the various workshops and conferences I have attended in my eight years as a building leader, not many of them have given me knowledge or information or resources to best support my role as an instructional leader (except for Twitter, which has led me to this potential dissertation study)! It's no wonder finding effective principals who are good at their job and are willing to stay in the position for an extended period of time to support growth, change and learning is more the exception and not the rule.

Is this because they lack support? Is it because they lack the "necessary" skills? Or is it because they lack high quality PD??

Stephen Basden's comment, September 12, 2013 8:30 PM
What I learned from this article is how a good coach on the field, can help a student's performance in the classroom. Strong and successful sports programs create atmospheres on campuses that help success in the classroom. Principles should take this into mind when hiring a coach. They can't just hire somebody with a good playbook but rather role models and well respected individuals that will create young men and women who challenge themselves outside of sports.

In this particular article, what I found most educational is when the author said "Coaching is an essential component of an effective professional development program. Coaching can build will, skill, knowledge, and capacity because it can go where no other professional development has gone before: into the intellect, behaviors, practices, beliefs, values, and feelings of an educator. " This is such a powerful statement. I have for years personally seen how coaching affects an individual. I had a football coach in high school that demanded the best from us not just on the field but in the classroom and as a person. This coach meant a lot to me, he was very knowledgeable, successful, and well respected that I treated his word like gospel. During the season I actually saw an increase in grades and personally happiness. Coaches can have a personal relationship with their players that no teacher, principle, or other faculty member can imitate. Sports is a powerful tool and when used correctly can change lives; not only of that individual but his peers too.

I selected because the title really grabbed my attention. Often times we hear how sports can really help a student or employee in their respective environments so I thought it was really interesting to see an article on how teachers can also benefit from sports. A good sports program directly translate into a good academic program at an institution.

This article gave me even more of an understanding on exactly how much sports affect all aspects of life. Sports go way beyond the playing field, they carry over into relationships and even occupations. Everything in life you do that isn't individual, needs teamwork. Whether that be wife and husband or employee and employer, sports have and continue to prove that teamwork gets things done the best. Sacrificing personal agendas to achieve greater goals is a must and sports have taught us this over the years.

Teaching Empathy: hey, that's networked leadership!

Teaching Empathy: hey, that's networked leadership! | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

As I read this article on Forbes tonight, Teaching Empathy: The Ancient Way Is Now Cutting-Edge it struck me that the four things they suggest we teach for empathy also represent network leadership.

- Teach listening as a core skill and expect it as a cultural practice.

- Start by being an active listener yourself and give people the time they need to reflect.

- Time not made for someone is time wasted.Make dialogue a primary team, group or classroom practice.

- Dialogue opens the doors to exploration—what Peter Senge in his guide “The Fifth Discipline Fieldbook” calls “skillful discussion,” where thoughtful decisions can be made that honor all participants (or, in business, stakeholders).

- Identify roles, not organizational charts. When people are able to articulate their role, what they need to be successful and what gets in the way of their success, an empathic understanding is present and the beginnings of a healthy team, class or group takes shape.

- Lead with consistency, authenticity and honesty.

- Be clear as to why you are doing what you are doing.

- Do not lead or manage through personality but rather through articulation. To articulate is to clarify.

Learning to Be a Leader: Leaders Must Be Curators

Learning to Be a Leader: Leaders Must Be Curators | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Wikipedia describes Digital curation as

...the selection, preservation, maintenance, collection and archiving of digital assets. Digital curation establishes, maintains and adds value to repositories of digital data for present and future use. This is often accomplished by archivists, librarians, scientists, historians, and scholars. The term curation in the past commonly referred to museum and library professionals. It has since been applied to interaction with social media including compiling digital images, web links and movie files.

Curation as a teacher is vital. Curation as a administrator is vital. Curation as a leader is vital. Curation as a life-long learner is vital. Curation helps us interact with the resources available; it helps us categorize, organize, and share resources with others. In curating resources we learn, grow, and contribute to our professional and personal learning networks in a hugely beneficial capacity that is only outmatched by the reciprocity it produces if done using social media like Diigo, Twitter, blogs, etc.
