Relationships: Who needs them?

Relationships: Who needs them? | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

I have been thinking lately about professional relationships and what role they play in how we learn as professionals, and as people. It would be difficult to learn much in total isolation.

.

The big picture of this can be overwhelming to a novice. It is a mindset change that requires understanding the culture of connectedness before a real immersion can take place. Educators need a basic knowledge of digital literacy to get started. This will quickly, and very painlessly grow with continued connectedness. There are several connected communities to help educators get started.

.

The Educator’s PLN is a start. www.edupln.com.

.

Twitter is probably the best way to experience the need and benefit to connectedness in developing both professional and personal relationships with other educators. Remember that in a group of like-minded people, as smart as any individual is, the group is always smarter. Of course, if you are reading this online, you are probably already connected and all of this makes sense, since you have already drunk the Kool-aid. Please print it out and share with an unconnected colleague.

.

===> To better educate our kids we need to better educate their educators. <===

Inside The Pixar Braintrust | Candor is the key to collaborating effectively.

Inside The Pixar Braintrust | Candor is the key to collaborating effectively. | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
A hallmark of a healthy creative culture is that its people feel free to share ideas, opinions, and criticisms. Our decision making is better when we draw on the collective knowledge and unvarnished opinions of the group. Candor is the key to collaborating effectively. Lack of candor leads to dysfunctional environments.

So how can a manager ensure that his or her working group, department, or company embraces candor? By putting mechanisms in place that explicitly say it is valuable. One of Pixar's key mechanisms is the Braintrust, which we rely on to push us toward excellence and to root out mediocrity. It is our primary delivery system for straight talk.

The Braintrust meets every few months or so to assess each movie we're making. Its premise is simple: Put smart, passionate people in a room together, charge them with identifying and solving problems, and encourage them to be candid.

The Braintrust is not foolproof, but when we get it right, the results are phenomenal.

7 Ways Teaching Has Changed

7 Ways Teaching Has Changed | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
This Is The World Teachers Must Adapt To: 7 Ways Teaching Has Changed by Terry Heick Teachers are the arbitrators of knowledge and culture. Knowledge…

7. A culture that can seem, well, distracted

And if we’re going to talk about the world teachers must adapt to, the idea of distraction has to be at least mentioned.

.

I’m not sure any of us fully understand the complexities of modern connectivity, information access, and the subjective idea of “distraction.” (After all, if five people are all at a table at Starbucks with their faces stuck to their phones, who’s to say their physical company rather than the respective apps that their own aren’t doing the distracting?)

.

That said, things are certainly different than the BS era of yesteryear (that is, before smartphones). At any moment someone can bust out a digital screen and start smearing their fingers across it. And no one knows what they’re doing and so we assume the worst and say the world is going down in flames.

.

And it very well could be. This is all new, so we don’t know. This is an era full of possibility, uncertainty, excitement, loss, and change.

.

This is the world teachers must adapt to.

Gust MEES's insight:

This is the world teachers must adapt to.

Priscilla Der's curator insight, April 6, 2014 10:29 PM

This article relates back to Global Competency as teachers must stay current with societal changes and shifts. Relating to students and engaging students require teachers to stay current and in the know vs. sticking to traditional routes/techniques in which we were taught with. We must continuously adjust our teaching to fit the 21st century needs and keep re-adjusting to align these needs to the Common Core curriculum.

Why new technologies could never replace great teaching

Why new technologies could never replace great teaching | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Technology in education gets plenty of hype, but let's not forget the importance of teaching and learning, says Pamela Wright

So where do I stand as an educator, as a leader in education? The centre point of my passion is a philosophy that I instil into my staff, into the school and into every school I support. It is the child – first and foremost.

Teachers don't simply teach concepts and skills. Any new technology can do that.

Good teachers inspire our young people to be lifelong learners, creating a culture of independent enquiry with their enthusiasm and passion. I know this because I see it every day. Good teachers have the skills to know exactly how to get the best out of each and every young person in their care.

Désapprendre, apprendre à apprendre: les objectifs éducatifs du XXIème siècle ? | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

What Will You Click On Next? Focusing Our Attention Online | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

The onslaught of information from the wired world can be overwhelming to anyone — even the savviest online audiences. But rather than completely shut out the digital world, the smarter solution is to learn how to manage it, says author Howard Rheingold.

In his book Net Smart: How to Thrive Online, Rheingold outlines the potential merits of the vast digital landscape, and offers ideas on how to lasso the unwieldy aspects and use it for good.

In a recent conversation on the Forum talk program, Rheingold stresses the importance of intention when it comes to managing digital noise. Knowing that every click will likely to lead to a chunk of time spent on what follows will help people decide if that’s worthwhile. Every click counts.

I think [there's] this matter of meta-cognition, of knowing where you’re putting your attention,” he told Michael Krasny on Forum. “You need to make decisions. ‘Am I going to click on that link? Am I going to maybe open a tab for it on my browser and look at it later?

Am I going to bookmark it to look at it much later or am I going to ignore it?’ You need to make those decisions consciously and I think most of us make them unconsciously… We wouldn’t have so many cute cat videos if people didn’t click on impulse.”

“You need to make decisions. ‘Am I going to click on that link? You need to make those decisions consciously.”
