What Creativity Really Is - and Why Schools Need It | #ModernEDU #ModernLEARNing  | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
What is creativity?

Although creativity is often defined in terms of new and useful products, I believe it makes more sense to define it in terms of processes. Specifically, creativity involves cognitive processes that transform one’s understanding of, or relationship to, the world.

A society thrives when individuals are given the space to create or imitate ideas.

There may be adaptive value to the seemingly mixed messages that teachers send about creativity. Creativity is the novelty-generating component of cultural evolution. As in any kind of evolutionary process, novelty must be balanced by preservation.

In biological evolution, the novelty-generating components are genetic mutation and recombination, and the novelty-preserving components include the survival and reproduction of “fit” individuals. In cultural evolution, the novelty-generating component is creativity, and the novelty-preserving components include imitation and other forms of social learning.

It isn’t actually necessary for everyone to be creative for the benefits of creativity to be felt by all. We can reap the rewards of the creative person’s ideas by copying them, buying from them or simply admiring them. Few of us can build a computer or write a symphony, but they are ours to use and enjoy nevertheless.

With this project you can change the path of the electric current to run through different sensors.  With this design you can switch between lighting a Blue LED or activating a Buzzer.  You also have the choice of using a Light Dependent Resistor with the LED or Buzzer.  You can be creative and design your own circuit and add different sensors (other LEDs...).

Great as a recycling project tie-in to reuse shipping boxes. Although, I think soldering is fun, this project is a great work-around for younger learners, lack of equipment, portability of Making.

How To Kill Learner Curiosity In 12 Easy Steps | #Awareness!! #Creativity | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

How To Kill Learner Curiosity In 12 Easy Steps.

Killing a learner’s natural curiosity doesn’t happen overnight. It can take as long as 12 years, and in some rare cases even that isn’t long enough.

Learning environments focused on standards, assessment, and compliance allow for the implementation of research-based strategies in pursuit of streams of data to prove that learning is happening. Curiosity is nice, but it’s a monumental challenge to measure.

Creative People Literally See the World Differently, Mind-Blowing Research Shows | #Creativity

Creative people aren't just different because of the surprising and valuable work they produce. Nor is exceptional creativity all a matter of personality. The differences between the creatively gifted and the rest of us apparently go even deeper, according to mind-blowing recent research.

In fact, creative people actually see the world differently, according to a fascinating recent post on The Conversation by two Australian psychologists.

10 Tips for Creating a Fertile Environment for Kids’ Creativity and Growth | #ModernEDU

10 Tips for Creating a Fertile Environment for Kids’ Creativity and Growth | #ModernEDU | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
There’s a common misconception that the best way to encourage children’s creativity is simply to get out of the way and let them be creative. Although it’s certainly true that children are naturally curious and inquisitive, they need support to develop their creative capacities and reach their full creative potential.

Supporting children’s development is always a balancing act: how much structure, how much freedom; when to step in, when to step back; when to show, when to tell, when to ask, when to listen.

Preparing a child for the world that doesn’t yet exist is not an easy task for any teacher. Step back and look at that picture from a broad perspective. What are the critical 21st-century skills every learner needs to survive and succeed in our world? What abilities and traits will serve them in a time that’s changing and developing so rapidly?

They want to be challenged and inspired in their learning. They want to collaborate and work with their peers. They want to incorporate the technology they love into their classroom experiences as much as they can. In short, they have just as high a set of expectations of their educators as their educators have of them.

How Are Educators Responding?

The Australian Curriculum Assessment and Reporting Authority, (ACARA), have identified the following as the General Capabilities they see as essential for learners:

Critical and creative thinking

Personal and social capability

Ethical understanding

Intercultural understanding

People with creative personalities really do see the world differently | #Creativity

People with creative personalities really do see the world differently | #Creativity  | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Our new research found that there are certain aspects of a person’s personality that can influence their creativity.

Psychologists often measure creativity using divergent thinking tasks. These require you to generate as many uses as possible for mundane objects, such as a brick. People who can see numerous and diverse uses for a brick (say, a coffin for a Barbie doll funeral diorama) are rated as more creative than people who can only think of a few common uses (say, for building a wall).

The aspect of our personality that appears to drive our creativity is called openness to experience, or openness. Among the five major personality traits, it is openness that best predicts performance on divergent thinking tasks. Openness also predicts real-world creative achievements, as well as engagement in everyday creative pursuits.

As Scott Barry Kaufman and Carolyn Gregoire explain in their book Wired to Create, the creativity of open people stems from a “drive for cognitive exploration of one’s inner and outer worlds”.

This curiosity to examine things from all angles may lead people high in openness to see more than the average person, or as another research team put it, to discover “complex possibilities laying dormant in so-called ‘familiar’ environments”.

Lateral Thinking - How can Lateral Thinking help you? | #Creativity #ProblemSolving

Lateral Thinking - How can Lateral Thinking help you? | #Creativity #ProblemSolving | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
With logic you start out with certain ingredients just as in playing chess you start out with given pieces. But what are those pieces? In most real life situations the pieces are not given, we just assume they are there. We assume certain perceptions, certain concepts and certain boundaries. Lateral thinking is concerned not with playing with the existing pieces but with seeking to change those very pieces. Lateral thinking is concerned with the perception part of thinking. This is where we organise the external world into the pieces we can then 'process'.

A healthy human brain does not want to always be creative, it is designed to figure out how to do things or how to think about things and then 'locks' that automatic response or behaviour into a subconscious process so that your conscious brain can focus on other matters.

Pensar de forma diferente...mirar mas allá de lo evidente... conduce a soluciones inesperadas a viejos problemas.
Andrea Mejia Medina's curator insight, May 23, 2017 7:38 PM
Lateral thinking is the art of looking at things sideways, and not choosing the obvious answer. When we think laterally, we look a little bit deeper into things. Lateral thinking makes new ideas posible If we are able to look at things differently, and make an unlikely connection, this will take us to a new way of problem solving, as suggested by O’Sullivan, 2008, “search as far outside the boundaries of convention as you can” (p.57). Lateral thinking leads us away from the rules and structure we normally encounter; this can be a mental block on our creativity.

Why Making Is Essential to Learning | #LEARNingByDoing #Maker #MakerED #MakerSpaces #Creativity

Why Making Is Essential to Learning | #LEARNingByDoing #Maker #MakerED #MakerSpaces #Creativity | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Research shows that hands-on learning is an effective way to teach students science. A 2009 study found that eighth-grade students who were involved in hands-on science projects demonstrated a deeper understanding of concepts than students who were taught with traditional methods such as textbook readings, lectures, and tests (Riskowski et al., 2009).

Why is hands-on learning effective? We can look to neuroscience for insight. Students who participate in science experiments, instead of just observing them, have a deeper conceptual understanding of science. Through brain imaging, researchers found that physical experience activates the sensorimotor region of students' brains, which helps reinforce what they're learning (Kontra et al., 2015).

If students use their hands as well as their minds, they're essentially learning twice.

Homemade Propeller Car | #Maker #MakerED #MakerSpaces #PracTICE #LEARNingByDoing  | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Recommended Age Range: Kindergarten, Elementary, Middle School (younger kids will need adult supervision and assistance since this project uses hot glue)Time Required: ~30 minutes
Difficulty: Easy

Cost: Around $10 in used supplies (The propeller is the most expensive component. I bought 4 of the one listed below for $16 total though the price fluctuates. It was $3.10 per propeller plus around $3 shipping and handling for all 4, so there is definitely a benefit to buying in bulk. A different, less expensive propeller could be used as long as it has a 2 mm shaft hole diameter.)
