South West Grid for Learning Trust - Digital Literacy

South West Grid for Learning Trust - Digital Literacy | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
SWGfL Staying Safe provides e-Safety information and resources for parents, schools and young people, whilst also presenting the latest e-Safety news.

Curriculum in a Nutshell
Digital media and technology are evolving at a dizzying pace, bringing with them extraordinary opportunities as well as real risks for young people. Young people are using the immense power of the Internet and mobile technologies to explore, connect, create, and learn in ways never before imagined. These technologies have changed the pattern of social relationships, their construction, negotiation and scope. The concept of “friends” and friendship has changed with the boundaries of privacy changing and evolving. Issues that emerge with this 24/7 “connected culture” – from identity theft, to cyberbullying, to uncertainty about which information to trust online – are surfacing both in schools and at home.

SWGfL is providing this FREE Digital Literacy and Citizenship Curriculum to help educators empower their students and their school communities to be safe, responsible, and savvy as they navigate this fast-paced digital world.

The curriculum:

- Introduces reliable, research-based information to students about digital media and their impact

- Helps pupils / students explore the complex issues of our connected culture

- Empowers pupils /students to think critically about the ways they use digital technologies as they build digital literacy skills for life

- Develops a resilience in pupils / students to act appropriately and safely in their use of digital technologies

Ch@dvice is a Belgian-Austrian project which focuses on online chat as a means of state-of-the-art primary help for minor victims of sexual abuse.

One of the outcomes of the project is the handbook for educators “Sex and Violence in Digital Media. Prevention, Help & Couselling”, produced by the Austrian Institute for Applied Telecommunications (OIAT).  The handbook contains useful information on media violence and phenomena such as cyber-bullying, sexting and grooming.

The resource is primarily meant to be used by teachers, therefore it contains tips on prevention but also how to handle such incidents at school. It also touches the topic of assistance for victims, with a special focus on online assistance. It contains a list of helplines operating in the European network under the Safer Internet Programme of the European Commission. The resource is complemented with 23 practical exercises that can be used in school or in youth work.

Since the handbook has been created in the framework of a EU Daphne III project in cooperation with partners from Belgium, ===>  it is available in 4 language versions: English, German, French and Dutch. <===

Skilled, Literate & Fluent in the Digital World

Skilled, Literate & Fluent in the Digital World | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
I have been intrigued with the relationship of being skilled, literate and fluent in the Digital World for a while. We are focusing at school to look through the lens of fluency using technology as...
Gust MEES's insight:

Note that a literate person is perfectly capable of using the tools. They know how to use them and what to do with them, but the outcome is less likely to match their intention. It is not until that person reaches a level of fluency, however, that they are comfortable with when to use the tools to achieve the desired outcome, and even why the tools they are using are likely to have the desired outcome at all.

What is Digital Citizenship ?

It is the combination of technical and social skills that enable a person to be successful and safe in the information age.

Just like literacy and numeracy initiatives which provide people with the skills to ' participate in the work force, digital literacy has become an essential skill to be a confident, connected, and actively involved life long learner.'

The EU's 'Right To Be Forgotten': What Data Protections Are We Missing in the US? - Forbes

The EU's 'Right To Be Forgotten': What Data Protections Are We Missing in the US? - Forbes | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Speaking to the “do not track issue” regarding the data of social network profiles, Erin Egan, Facebook’s chief privacy officer, said she wasn’t sure that a “do not track” browser setting accurately reflected a user’s wish to not to be tracked online, particularly in cases where companies such as Facebook tracked users to enable the very feature that customizes the user experience on the popular social network. Egan added, “For Facebook, we have social plugins. We don’t use that data for an advertising purpose — we use it to personalize the data on those pages.

===> ” Egan maintains that until the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) sets an official standard, “it’s really hard for companies like us.” More browser platforms may push ahead with a standard of their own, implementing settings that will enable expanded user control to block cookies, such as Internet Explorer’s default do not track setting. <===

Arrrrrgh, as long as anybody pushes responsibility to others, where will WE go then!???
