Oculus Rift Is Too Cool to Ignore

Now that virtual reality has arrived (again), it’s here to stay—even if it’s not clear exactly how we will end up using it.

Virtual field trips

In addition to traveling to the moon, you can use Rift to kayak down the Colorado River while checking out the Grand Canyon, tossing tiny pellets to lure passing fish. You can dive with sharks, sea turtles, and other creatures, watching exhalation bubbles seep from the spot where your face mask should be and feeling that prickly sense you get when you’re actually underwater, wondering if something is creeping up behind you.

Over the next three years, such virtual field trips will become a lot more common, says Jeremy Bailenson, founding director of Stanford University’s Virtual Human Interaction Lab. His lab built one such experience, called The Crystal Reef, which lets you swim through areas of varying acidity in the ocean to explore the effects of carbon dioxide on underwater habitats. It premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in April, and Bailenson expects it to be available for Rift and HTC’s Vive headset in a few months.

What's the problem of education? | #ModernEDU #ProfessionalEDUcators #LEARNing2LEARN #ICT  | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
I think that approaching the problem of education in one only direction is a mistake. I don't think that learning instructors, companies, nor users could be directly blamed. There are many factors involved in a training or educational process. The most visible and common ones are the figure of the teacher and the learner, but we also take into account the organization, policy, resources available, social context…

We should stop for a moment and analyze what is happening. Is it a matter of education in its most global dimension? Is it a problem related to making oneself comfortable by the part of some people who haven't developed an interest in self-improvement and learning? Is it a poor approach by the part of the educational processes?

That's a lot of questions and I'm afraid they won't have a clear and direct answer.

Effective teachers for all classrooms? It’s time for teacherpreneurs - Global Education & Skills Forum

Effective teachers for all classrooms? It’s time for teacherpreneurs - Global Education & Skills Forum | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Effective teachers for all classrooms? It’s time for teacherpreneurs

Education conversations around the globe are focused on how to recruit, evaluate, and develop effective teachers. And for good reason. A steady drip of empirical evidence has shown that teachers are the most crucial in-school factor in student learning.

But in many cases education policy leaders have fixated on firing bad teachers and recruiting better ones. They have paid far less attention to spreading the expertise of the many effective teachers already teaching—or to providing them with opportunities to lead without leaving their classrooms and profession.

The Teacherpreneur

Enter the teacherpreneur—who teaches students regularly but has the time, space, and reward to incubate and execute his or her own ideas. Imagine a public school teacher who has the respect (and income potential) of an endowed chair at a research university and whose pedagogical and policy expertise drives innovative, collaborative projects that spread effective teaching practices.

There are at least six sound reasons for this bold brand of teacher leadership:

Researchers have proven that students learn more when their teachers collaborate in deep and authentic ways;
Principals alone cannot address demands of 21st-century learning and accountability;
Top-performing nations invest in teachers as leaders;
The most effective teacher evaluation systems are driven by master teachers;
Teachers trust their teaching colleagues more than anyone else to help them improve their practice; and
Large percentages of teachers are interested in leading without leaving the classroom.

Technology: Banks seek the key to blockchain | #Finance #Bitcoin

It doesn’t feel like a revolutionary moment. A member of a small team from the Swiss bank UBS, holed up on the 42nd floor of London’s Canary Wharf, taps a screen and a bond is sold by a company called ABC to an investor called XYZ.
It is the type of transaction executed millions of times a day by banks globally but this dummy transfer is different. It was completed via an internal blockchain, the shared database technology that gained notoriety as the platform for the crypto currency bitcoin. Banks are now racing to harness the power of the blockchain technology, in a belief that it could cut up to $20bn off costs and transform the way the industry works.

5 Ways Gifted Students Learn Differently

5 Ways Gifted Students Learn Differently  | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
There are five ways in which gifted students tend to learn differently from their peers:

1. They learn new material much more quickly.
2. They have a better ability to remember what they have learned, which reduces or eliminates the need for review.
3. They have ability for abstract or complex thinking that their peers do not have.
4. They become focused on specific topics and are very passionate about them to the exclusion of other topics and subjects.
5. They can take in many stimuli at once, knowing what is going on around them while concentrating on a specific task.

Using these characteristics as a guideline, approximately 6%, or 3 million, students in the United States may be classified as gifted. Although there is little argument that gifted and talented students must be provided with challenges that meet their academic needs, no federal regulations specifically mandate special services for G and T learners.

I think this is an interesting article that is a little similar to this weeks module being characteristics of gifted students.  The article states the top five ways gifted students learn differently: quick learning, better recall, complex thinking, focused and passionate about specific topics, and the ability to take in many different types of stimuli at once.
Laurie J. Croft's comment, September 26, 2017 2:50 PM
I agree that this is a good article to review in the context of what we're learning--these are so basic--and imagine the frustration of rarely having these realities acknowledged.

8 digital skills we must teach our children | #DQ #DigitalQuotient #EQ #EmotionalQuotient | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
The digital world is a vast expanse of learning and entertainment. But it is in this digital world that kids are also exposed to many risks, such as cyberbullying, technology addiction, obscene and violent content, radicalization, scams and data theft. The problem lies in the fast and ever evolving nature of the digital world, where proper internet governance and policies for child protection are slow to catch up, rendering them ineffective.

Moreover, there is the digital age gap. The way children use technology is very different from adults. This gap makes it difficult for parents and educators to fully understand the risks and threats that children could face online. As a result, adults may feel unable to advise children on the safe and responsible use of digital technologies. Likewise, this gap gives rise to different perspectives of what is considered acceptable behaviour.

So how can we, as parents, educators and leaders, prepare our children for the digital age? Without a doubt, it is critical for us to equip them with digital intelligence.

So where is this all going?

The Future of Education – Personalized, Perfect & Free (Thanks to AI and VR)

Right now, online platforms like Khan Academy and Coursera have made a plethora of educational resources available 1) for free and 2) on demand, such that you can pick and choose what you learn and at what speed you learn it.

Khan Academy has delivered over 300 million lessons since it started in 2006, features 5,000 free instructional videos in 65 languages, and allows users to complete 4 million exercises every day – simply amazing.

In 2011, Stanford professor Andrew Ng decided to put his machine learning course online for free, thinking that maybe a few additional people would tune in with his students. Within days, 100,000 people had signed up to take the course.

We are already seeing technology democratize access to education – but soon the education itself will become even more powerful with the help of AI and virtual and augmented reality.

In the near future, artificial intelligence will be able to personalize learning platforms to each individual student.

The AI will have unlimited access to information and will deliver it at the optimal speed to each student in an engaging, fun way.

Potential Power of Blogging for Pedagogy

Potential Power of Blogging for Pedagogy | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
I believe in the potential power of blogging. I believe it can be harnessed to be a powerful pedagogical tool in the 21st Century.

4 Benefits of Integrating Blogging into Pedagogy

1. Blogs promote participation and collaboration of knowledge and skills. There are a myriad of resources available on the internet that can help students become creators, and not merely consumers of different texts and bodies of knowledge.

2. Blogs promote global communication and collaboration. Teachers can facilitate interactions with diverse cultures, ethnicities, and religions, and social contexts. Students can be helped to challenging their thinking by considering other viewpoints.

3. Blogs promote the critical analysis of pedagogy and literacies.

4. Blogs create the potential for interactive spaces for authentic exchanges. Strategies including reading logs, book reviews, parental communication, encouraging reading and writing and responding around a particular theme or focus.

If we can harness this power, we have a strong pedagogical tool on our hands. As with other areas in education, we can begin to harness this power by asking ourselves the right kinds of questions that can bring about the results we want to see.

Virtual reality — from the living room to the classroom | #VR

Virtual reality — from the living room to the classroom | #VR  | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
VR has long been heralded as a potential influential tool in academia. A 1998 study, Educational Uses of Virtual Reality Technology, published by Christine Youngblut of the Institute for Defense Analyses, found that when compared to traditional classroom environments, students of different backgrounds, ages and across a variety of different experiments generally had a positive experience with virtual reality. Moreover, their virtual lessons were evaluated as either being superior or on par with human instructors, and motivation among students was “extremely high.”

There is a coming new age in education, where students can learn by experience. This will be driven by virtual reality technology, and powered by UGC content. We are just beginning to see huge breakthroughs in the imaginative educational content that developers are creating for kids and young teenagers alike. The VR landscape is evolving — all the way from the living room to the classroom.

SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL LEARNING: EQUIPPING STUDENTS FOR THE DIGITAL ECONOMY

SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL LEARNING: EQUIPPING STUDENTS FOR THE DIGITAL ECONOMY | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
In the report ‘New Vision for Education: Fostering Social and Emotional Learning through Technology', the World Economic Forum explores how "character qualities" such as collaboration, communication and critical thinking will equip students to succeed in the swiftly evolving digital economy.

To thrive in the 21st century, students need more than traditional academic learning. They must be adept at collaboration, communication and problem-solving, which are some of the skills developed through social and emotional learning (SEL).

In 2015, the World Economic Forum (WEF) published the report New Vision for Education: Unlocking the Potential of Technology that focused on the pressing issue of the 21st-century skills gap and ways to address it through technology. In that report, WEF defined a set of 16 crucial proficiencies for education. Of those skills, 10 were labelled either “competencies” or “character qualities”. Competencies are the means by which students approach complex challenges; they include collaboration, communication and critical thinking and problem-solving. Character qualities are the ways in which students approach their changing environment; they include curiosity, adaptability and social and cultural awareness.
