ChatGPT is certainly the best-known large language model (LLM) available today and it has a lot to offer. But you can’t run it locally and instead you must use OpenAI’s online service to access its functionality. That doesn’t, however, mean that you’re out of luck if you want to use ChatGPT on your own DIY devices. As Shakhizat Nurgaliyev shows, you can build your own ChatGPT client powered by Arduino.

Ask your students, What do you know or have you heard about ChatGPT? Have you experimented with it yourself? What did you think of it? What questions do you have?

Depending on their responses, they may need a broad introduction to the tool. If so, we recommend an episode of The Daily called “Did Artificial Intelligence Just Get Too Smart?” (Students can follow along via the transcript.)

L’une des premières critiques adressées à ChatGPT a été que cette intelligence générative se contente de couper-coller des informations rentrées dans sa base de données. La machine étant totalement dépendante pour ses réponses de cette base de données, la responsabilité des programmeurs y est évidemment fondamentale. Une IA nourrie avec une base de données américaine ne donnera évidemment pas les mêmes résultats que le même système alimenté par une base de données chinoise ou indienne. Même si les cultures occidentales ont développé une politique de traduction importante des œuvres de pays non occidentaux, celles-ci sont trop lacunaires pour donner une idée exacte de la façon dont ces cultures peuvent se représenter le monde. Mais quel rapport avec l’humain ?

The recent revelations that ChatGPT can be used by students to write convincing essays and explanations is a frightening prospect for any teacher. With many exams and assignments now carried out online, there is ample opportunity for using AI writers.

While ChatGPT might seem at first glimpse like a gift to students, it is actually a sign that they need to up their game. Students will need to increase their synthesis of evidence, demonstrate critical thinking and show creativity just to stay ahead of AI during their studies and future employment.
