What Does It Mean to Be a “Change Leader” in Education?

What Does It Mean to Be a “Change Leader” in Education? | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Over the past 20 years, I have studied and worked with educators who have aspired to be change leaders in a wide variety of schools in the US and elsewhere.

The most effective of these change leaders – whether they are classroom teachers, principals, or systems leaders – share a number of common practices.

Gust MEES's insight:

First, successful change leaders clearly articulate the need for change to a variety of audiences in ===> ways that are intellectually coherent and emotionally compelling. <===

The ability to do this requires that change leaders immerse themselves into radically different worlds.

===> AND they need to have a lot of courage as well! <===

Education Vision Leadership » Looking to Transform Education? Embrace Learning, Leadership, and Innovation

Education Vision Leadership » Looking to Transform Education? Embrace Learning, Leadership, and Innovation | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Changes in education occur frequently: new programs and initiatives, new standards and assessments, new state and federal mandates. But none of these represents a true paradigm shift. This isn’t surprising, considering that innovation, responsible risk-taking, and teacher leadership are rarely encouraged, valued, or supported in education. Of course, there are pockets of teachers and schools that are doing these things, but it’s certainly not the norm.

So what needs to change to ensure that all 21st-century students are learning to the best of their abilities? Our education system needs to embrace—not just give lip service to—a culture driven by learning, high-performing teachers, and transformative technology.

As we have progressed, not only in our use of technology but also our understanding of effective leadership, we know that communication includes effective talking but, more importantly, listening. Being able to hear what is being said from those we serve is extremely important to how we develop our schools, and the conversation is extremely valuable. Yet, many schools and organizations use social media in the old fashion: sharing information but not having a conversation. In reality, just because you have ears doesn’t mean you are listening.

Great article on leadership, check it out and provide me your input. Being a leader doesn't always mean being the one in charge.

Leadership can happen throughout all levels of the organization chart. Leadership is about influence. A leader knows how to Influence others to follow their guidance and direction.

Traditionally, we think of leaders who lead or influence those who are positioned below them. While this is often the case, leadership can actually occur in all directions.

===> A true leader will know how to influence those who work alongside them as well as those who work above them. <===

Knowing how to influence your supervisor involves some strategic leadership skills. The one who is positioned to lead you will not be swayed easily. This idea is often referred to as leading up or upward leadership.

Leadership: 9 things successful people do differently

Leadership: 9 things successful people do differently | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

If you aren’t sure, you are far from alone in your confusion. It turns out that even brilliant, highly accomplished people are pretty lousy when it comes to understanding why they succeed or fail. The intuitive answer — that you are born predisposed to certain talents and lacking in others — is really just one small piece of the puzzle.

In fact, decades of research on achievement suggests that successful people reach their goals not simply because of who they are, but more often because of what they do.
